Old Mill was your typical small town. The folks were happy and friendly, everyone knew each other...or so they thought. One of them was different, hidden in their own world of darkness, hungry for blood. The murders started on a peaceful warm night, no one heard the screams of death, but the whole town would experience the terror that was to follow. And now the memory of the terror will live on in your mind as you try to put this nerve shattering thriller down. Figuring out this killer is murder... Do you think you can survive the Old Mill Killer?

Young Tora has heard many wondrous tales of the strange people and places beyond the walls of Holm. She always hoped that maybe, someday, she might have the opportunity to see it all for herself—but she never expected that hope to become a nightmare. What begins as an act of neighborliness takes on an ominous tone when Tora and her mother visit Helga, a neighbor with a newborn. With gray skin and black eyes, the baby’s horrid screams leave no doubt there is something wrong. Helga claims an evil creature took her baby, leaving a monster behind, and Tora soon learns Helga is right. Tora’s life takes a traumatic turn when the seasonal workers arrive for the summer. A young man with piercing blue eyes and mysterious tattoos is among them, and things will never be the same. In a valley long ago teeming with magic and trolls, Tora uncovers secrets she couldn’t have imagined and sets off a series of disturbing events that alter her life forever.

Battle Creek, Michigan, is famous as the birthplace of breakfast cereal, and the nearby suburb of Marshall is as wholesome as shredded wheat. Well-known for its colorful Victorian mansions, this stately slice of nineteenth-century Americana became infamous on a frigid night in February of 1991. Newscaster Diane Newton King was stepping out of her car, her children strapped into the backseat, when a sniper’s bullet cut her down. The police assumed that the killer was her stalker—a crazed fan who had been terrorizing King for weeks. But as their investigation ground to a standstill, the police turned to another suspect—one much closer to home. In this gripping retelling of the crime and its aftermath, journalist Lowell Cauffiel re-creates the atmosphere of terror that marked King’s last days, giving us a story of celebrity, obsession, and what it means to kill.

Book Synopsis Brush Men and Vigilantes by : David Pickering
Download or read book Brush Men and Vigilantes written by David Pickering and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Charles Frazier's novel Cold Mountain dramatized, dissenters from the Confederacy lived in mortal danger across the South. In scattered pockets from the Carolinas to the frontier in Texas, some men clung to a belief in the Union or an unwillingness to preserve the slaveholding Confederacy, and they died at the hands of their own neighbors. Brush Men and Vigilantes tells the story of how dissent, fear, and economics developed into mob violence in a corner of Texas--the Sulphur Forks river valley northeast of Dallas. Authors David Pickering and Judy Falls have combed through court records, newspapers, letters, and other primary sources and collected extended-family lore to relate the details of how vigilantes captured and killed more than a dozen men. The authors' story begins before the Civil War, as they describe the particular social and economic conditions that gave rise to tension and violence during the war. Unlike most other parts of Texas, the Sulphur Forks river valley had a significant population of Upper Southerners, some of whom spoke out against secession, objected to enlisting in the Confederate army, or associated with "Union men." For some of them, safety meant disappearing into the tangled brush thickets of the region. Routed from the thicket or gone to ground there, dissenters faced death. Betrayed by links to a well-known Union guerrilla from the Sulphur Forks area, more men of the area were captured, tried in mock courts, and hanged. Other men met their death by sniper fire or private execution, as in the case of brush man Frank Chamblee, who for years eluded his enemies by clever tricks but was finally gunned down after the war, reportedly by one of the area's most prominent men. Anyone with an interest in the new history of the Civil War or Texas should find much to digest in this compelling book, whose authors Richard B. McCaslin congratulates for taking their place "in the ranks of Texas' literary reconstructionists."
