Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery in Missouri, 1804-1865 The birth-rate was perhaps about the same as it is among the negroes of the State today, but because of the property interest of the master the death-rate may have been lower. For the year ending June I, 1850, the Slave births in Missouri numbered 2699, while the deaths amounted to If these figures are correct, the births were double the death toll. It would be unsafe, however, to generalize from these limited data. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning of French rule of Missouri in 1720 through this state's abolition of slavery in 1865, liberty was always the goal of the vast majority of its enslaved people. The presence in eastern Kansas of a host of abolitionists from New England made slaveholding risky business. Many religiously devout persons were imprisoned in Missouri for "slave stealing." Based largely on old newspapers, prison records, pardon papers, and other archival materials, this book is an account of the legal and physical obstacles that slaves faced in their quest for freedom and of the consequences suffered by persons who tried to help them. Attitudes of both slave holders and abolitionists are examined, as is the institution's protection in both the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution. The book discusses the experiences of particular individuals and examines the Underground Railroad on Missouri's borders. Appendices provide details from two Spanish colonial census reports, a list of abolitionist prison inmates with details about their time served, and the percentages of African Americans still in bondage in 16 jurisdictions from 1820 to 1860.

Mack, on the Slavery Question in the State Senate, January 20, 1865 In addition to this, in 1804, an immense country was acquired by purchase from France, consisting of some of the richest portions of the valley of the Mississippi, and adapted, throughout a large part of its extent, to the raising of cotton and sugar. This latter staple being equally with cotton adapted to slave labor, added another strong link to the great chain of interests so rapidly developed in favor of the slave power; and the pernicious system of slavery, so oh noxious to every sentiment of justice, so fatal to every interest of humanity, thus fostered and sustained by the selfish interests of mankind, spread rapidly along the valley of the Mississippi until it reached the territory that now forms the State of Missouri, and in 1818 acquired there a power sufficient to demand for this territory admission into the Union as a slave-state. This work was compiled under the Franklin Roosevelt administration during the New Deal and economic relief and recovery program. Each entry represents an oral history of a former slave or a descendant of a former slave and his or her personal account of life during slavery and emancipation. These interviews were published as type written records that were difficult to read. This new edition has been enlarged and enhanced for greater legibility. No library collection in Missouri would be complete without a copy of Missouri Slave Narratives.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missouri Party Struggles in the Civil War Period This resolution, Brown declared, had removed all restraints upon the opponents of slavery from discussing the subject. And had made emancipation henceforth and for ever an open question in Missouri. Slavery would be abolished there, he maintained; but out of regard for the poor white laborer, and not as an act of humanity to the slaves.
