Book excerpt: Jo Walton is an award-winning author of, inveterate reader of, and chronic re-reader of science fiction and fantasy books. What Makes This Book So Great? is a selection of the best of her musings about her prodigious reading habit. Jo Walton's many subjects range from acknowledged classics, to guilty pleasures, to forgotten oddities and gems. Among them, the Zones of Thought novels of Vernor Vinge; the question of what genre readers mean by 'mainstream'; the under-appreciated SF adventures of C. J. Cherryh; the field's many approaches to time travel; the masterful science fiction of Samuel R. Delany; Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children; the early Hainish novels of Ursula K. Le Guin; and a Robert A. Heinlein novel you have most certainly never read. Over 130 essays in all, What Makes This Book So Great is an immensely engaging collection of provocative, opinionated thoughts about past and present-day fantasy and science fiction, from one of our best writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ah, I see... you flipped to this side to see what the book is about? Well, I am sorry to disappoint you. On this side of this book I will tell you why you should read this book, and not what the book is about... why is that then? Well, because what the book is really about is what it states in the title... No point in repeating that here... and if you want to know what adventures it might be, it is better to read them inside the book, than to get some examples of them here on the back of the cover... I mean, it would not be fair to the adventures that make up an entire book and try to squeeze them into a few words, here on the back of the book, would it? If you should read this book or not depends on if you have read the first book in this series. If not, you really don't have to. But it might be a good idea to start at the beginning. Now, if you have read the first book, and you expect to continue the story just about where the first book ended, I am sorry to disappoint you, because you will have to wait for the fourth book to continue that part of the story. In this book, and the next book, you will get other pieces of the puzzle, pieces that will make the fourth book much more pleasant to read, even if book two and three is not necessary to read to be able to enjoy the over all story. But I promise that you will lack some important pieces and details that will make the whole reading experience of the fourth book possibly confusing. And if you are fine with that, then absolutely no need to read this book. But if you are one of those who are curious and kind of want the whole picture, I definitely recommend reading this book as well. And the third, once it gets published. Enjoy! ^..^

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile robots are playing an increasingly important role in our world. Remotely operated vehicles are in everyday use for hazardous tasks such as charting and cleaning up hazardous waste spills, construction work of tunnels and high rise buildings, and underwater inspection of oil drilling platforms in the ocean. A whole host of further applications, however, beckons robots capable of autonomous operation without or with very little intervention of human operators. Such robots of the future will explore distant planets, map the ocean floor, study the flow of pollutants and carbon dioxide through our atmosphere and oceans, work in underground mines, and perform other jobs we cannot even imagine; perhaps even drive our cars and walk our dogs. The biggest technical obstacles to building mobile robots are vision and navigation-enabling a robot to see the world around it, to plan and follow a safe path through its environment, and to execute its tasks. At the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute, we are studying those problems both in isolation and by building complete systems. Since 1980, we have developed a series of small indoor mobile robots, some experimental, and others for practical applicationr Our outdoor autonomous mobile robot research started in 1984, navigating through the campus sidewalk network using a small outdoor vehicle called the Terregator. In 1985, with the advent of DARPA's Autonomous Land Vehicle Project, we constructed a computer controlled van with onboard sensors and researchers. In the fall of 1987, we began the development of a six-legged Planetary Rover.
