Book excerpt: The Warramunga's War is a sweeping narrative of the friendship that forms between a young Australian army officer, Jamie Munro, and an educated half-caste Warramunga aboriginal NCO, Jack 'Jacko' O'Brien, during the Syrian campaign against the Vichy French in World War II. Jacko rescues a wounded Jamie after which they are conscripted in Cairo by MI6. Here, Jamie and Jacko learn about the seamy side of war in counterespionage as they track down German spies. The principal fictional characters interact with actual historical figures and events throughout the story. As the desert war escalates to the west of Cairo, the MI6 team confuses the enemy with misleading radio messages using German codes and using local entertainers as undercover agents. On one of his day leaves, Jacko meets a beautiful young Syrian-French girl and a strong romantic bond forms between the two during his time in Cairo. Following the end of the desert war, Jamie and Jacko are assigned to wartime intelligence work in Southeast Asia. After the end of the Pacific war, they initiate the Darwin operations of the CIS, the Commonwealth Investigation Service. On the trail of two suspected wartime German agents, they discover the agents have formed a dangerous criminal gang with an individual they had known during their time in Cairo. The tracking skills of the Warramunga are needed to finally catch up with the murderous gang in Western Australia's Kimberley region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Koreans attack on their Southern neighbors shocked and surprised the World. The conflict rapidly escalated with China soon heavily involved on one side and the United States and United Nations on the other. The author, then a young Gunner officer, found himself in the midst of this very nasty war. He describes first hand what it was like to be at the infamous Battle of the Hook, where UN troops held off massed attacks by the Communists. Few outside the war zone realized just how horrific conditions were.As a qualified Chinese interpreter and, later, a senior military intelligence officer, Parritt is well placed to analyze why the Commonwealth got involved, the mistakes and successes and the extreme risk that the war represented. This is not only a fine memoir but a unique insight into a forgotten War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book of a hundred stories and life lessons: crazy; beautiful; very serious. It is of a golden life and nine near-death encounters, moving between remote camps amidst poor indigenous folk, the salt of the Earth, and the glossy skyscrapers of our cities. Mineral exploration is a strange game. It is highest technology, big dollars, outback people and their aspirations, wonderful places, and flies, dirt, mud, budget cuts and enduring friendships. Remote projects keep explorers abroad in this beautiful world, but far from families. You have time and yearning on your hands, time to think and dream. When you reach executive ranks, you deal in public ideologies about mining, government and NGOs at all levels, billions of dollars, and changing whole regions around great mines for better more than for worse. This is the easily-written story of man and manager, major public policies, and many good folk across the world. Book excerpt: Wild Boys explores the challenge of disengaged youth from a mother's perspective and offers an intimate insight into rarely chronicled aspects of youth work For too long, Helena, a mother of four boys, has allowed her eldest son to call the shots. Even though 17-year-old Joey no longer lives in the family home, she does his washing, cooks his meals, hands over money for his groceries, and spends her nights driving him around town. Into Helena's troubled life comes charismatic youth worker Bernie Shakeshaft. After hearing Bernie speak on the radio about his successful youth welding project, Helena thinks she's found the answer for her son. Joey doesn't want to be involved but, in his place, Helena goes along to the welding shed. Over the next few years, she watches and learns as Bernie, using wisdom gained from Aboriginal elders during his time as a stockman in central Australia, teaches the young men involved to "man up." Through his unique methods, Bernie changes the lives of all those around him, including Helena, who transforms into the Mistress of Tough Love and begins to heal her relationship with her son.

Book excerpt: Ochre and Rust offers a fresh perspective on frontier relations between Australian Aboriginal people and European colonists. Nine museum artefacts take the reader into a fascinating zone of encounter and mutual curiosity between collectors and those indigenous people who piqued or responded to their interest. While colonialism is the broad frame, details gleaned from archives, images and the objects themselves reveal a new picture of interaction between individual Aboriginal people and European collectors. Philip Jones explores and makes sense of particular historical moments in colonial history, when Aboriginal people perceived and expected other, more elusive outcomes. Ochre and Rust, an elegantly written challenge to received wisdom about the colonial frontier, has won Australia's inaugural Prime Minister's Award for Literary Non-Fiction.
