Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketch of the Russell Family, and Connections In those days they had a great many difficulties to encounter. They had to pack all their salt, iron-and cooking utensils from the East on horses. They would start with provision for themselves and horses, leaving at their stopping places feed for the horses, to be used on their return trip. The writer has often heard his father tell of going east of' the mountains with two horses for four bushels of salt, when fifteen years of age. I would suppose that they would not waste much of it, when they had to get it in this way those days. Their farm implements were all of a very rude sort. Their ploughs were made with wooden mould-boards and when they would strike anything hard they would kick, sometimes knocking the person holding them down. There were no steam ploughs, or railroads for traveling as we have now. They were very punctual in attending church, often walking eight or ten miles, and would sit all day while two sermons were being preached, without any fire. How different now do we appreciate these favors and blessings which we now enjoy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ... he lost no time in disengaging himself from such dangerous company. In a letter to the council he says--" I severed myself from him at a cross-street end, and taking water, came back to my house, where I made no delay, but with all convenient speed put myself and followers in readiness; and with the best strength I could then presently make, being about the number of twenty horse, I went toward the court for her majesty's service." In 1592 we find the young earl pressing his suit with a daughter of Lord Chandos, but insuperable difficulties intervening, the negotiation was broken off, and the lady afterwards became the bride of his cousin Francis, the son of Sir William Russell. He did not long brood over his disappointment, for on the 12th December, 1594, he was married to Lucy, daughter and co-heiress of Sir John Harrington of Exton, at his seat at Stepney--a lady not more celebrated for beauty and vivacity of wit than for her generosity to men of genius, the taste which she carried into all her pursuits, and the success with which she cultivated some of those lighter sciences that minister to taste its most refined gratification. On the accession of James, she was appointed by the queen, Anne of Denmark, to her privy chamber; whilst her mother, the Lady Harrington, was intrusted with the education of the Princess Elizabeth. The desire for such appointments, among the ladies of the court, gave rise to endless intrigues. The Earl of Worcester writes to Lord Shrewsbury--" All the rest are for the private chamber, when they are not shut out: for many times the doors are locked. But the plotting and malice amongst them is such, that I think envy hath tied an invisible snake about most of their necks, to sting one another to death!" Lady...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides extensive information on craftsmen-built houses in China. Though some inroads have been made in studying this folk custom, this work represents the first comprehensive and systematic monograph. The book examines the topic at the two main levels of “history” and “theory”. Combining historical textual research, contemporary textual research, and field study, the book presents systematic information on the folk custom of craftsmen-built houses in China. At the level of theoretical research, it puts forward some original opinions on the major theoretical issues, such as the folk custom of religious belief, the boundary between superstition and religion, and the relationship between oral literature and ritual. The book provides a guide to help readers systematically understand the folk custom of craftsmen-built houses in China. Sharing valuable insights into Chinese architectural history, as well as religious studies, cultural anthropology, and folklore, it will appeal to researchers in the fields of folklore, cultural anthropology, and architecture and can also serve as a popular science book for understanding Chinese architectural culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Keats's biographers have rarely been fair to George Keats (1797--1841) -- pushing him to the background as the younger brother, painting him as a prodigal son, or labeling him as the "business brother." Some have even condemned him as a heartless villain who took more than his fair share of an inheritance and abandoned the ailing poet to pursue his own interests. In this authoritative biography, author Lawrence M. Crutcher demonstrates that George Keats deserves better. Crutcher traces his subject from Regency London to the American frontier, correcting the misconceptions surrounding the Keats brothers' relationship and revealing the details of George's remarkable life in Louisville, Kentucky. Brilliantly illustrated with more than ninety color photographs, this engaging book reveals how George Keats embraced new business opportunities to become an important member of the developing urban community. In addition, George Keats of Kentucky offers a rare and fascinating glimpse into nineteenth-century life, commerce, and entrepreneurship in Louisville and the Bluegrass.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labor conflicts, arrests, espionage--it was all there at the once ubiquitous mills of Fulton County. Employee records and snatches of paper prove workers spied on each other. Company owners were paranoid about labor unions taking over. Copious documentation, unearthed here by author Lisa M. Russell, brings the workaday drama back to life. These mills sustained families, but exploitation was far from uncommon. When mill workers finally went on strike, there was hell to pay. The company bosses yanked strikers from their shacks. With the help of Governor Talmadge, the National Guard arrested working women with their children. They marched these "criminals" to a former WWI prisoner of war camp that once held enemy German soldiers. Hard to believe this was happening in and around Atlanta in the early 1900s.

Book excerpt: The collection of pictures at Wilton has been celebrated since the seventeenth century; and its historic arrangement is uniquely well documented in a series of catalogues of which the first, issued in 1731, was the earliest such publication about any private collection in England. Of successive owners of the house, three made significant contributions: William, 4th Earl of Pembroke, who commissioned van Dyck's monumental portrait of his family that dominates the Double Cube Room he had created; his grandson, Thomas, 8th Earl of Pembroke who assembled what was in some respects a pioneering collection of old master pictures for the house; and his grandson, Henry, 10th Earl of Pembroke, patron of Reynolds and Wilson, among others. Such masterpieces as Lucas van Leyden's Card Players, Cesare da Sesto's Leda - long attributed to Leonardo - and Ribera's Democritus are matched by remarkable portrait drawings by Raphael and Holbein. These are complemented by a substantial deposit of family portraits and other pictures that attest to the tastes and interests of successive generations of the Herbert family.

Lounsbury James Fenimore Cooper by Mary E. Phillips James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) was a prolific and popular American writer of the early 19th century. His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. Before embarking on his career as a writer, Cooper served in the U.S. Navy, which greatly influenced many of his novels. The novel that launched his career was The Spy, tale of espionage in Revolutionary War. He also wrote numerous sea stories, and his best-known works are five historical novels of the frontier period known as the Leatherstocking Tales. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans.

Book excerpt: The gospel of Jesus Christ is not one theory of the world’s origin and purpose standing behind or alongside other competing viewpoints. Neither is it one of many components of the Christian religion. It is the central purpose, heartbeat, and jewel of the entire universe. It is the power of God Almighty. It is the set of glasses we must wear to rightly understand all of God’s Word and all of God’s world. Whether we acknowledge it or not, Jesus Christ is the Lord, Savior, and Treasure. This gospel of Jesus Christ is God’s grace for individuals, and God’s grace for all of creation. John Kuyper Liberty explains from Scripture that the gospel transforms how we understand and relate to God and his revelation (upward theology), how we understand and relate to ourselves and other Christians (inward theology), and how we understand and relate to God’s broader creation, our communities, our cultures, and those who are not Christians (outward theology). This monumental resource written for all people includes chapter titles like The Good News of God’s Word, Gospel Worship, Gospel Joy, The Gospel and Money, The Gospel-Centered Home, The Gospel and Work, and Gospel Society. Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, bloody cross, resurrection in power, and ascension into Kingship, is reconciling all things to himself.
