Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Lectures on Light: Delivered in America in 1872-1873 During their delivery, the experimental facts were before the audience, forming Visible links in the logic of each discourse. Here, by the use of plain language, I have endeavoured to reproduce distinct images of these facts, and to show them in their proper relations. With a View to this end I have sought to raise the Wave-theory of Light to adequate clearness in the reader's mind, and to show its power as an organizer of optical phenomena. Book excerpt: Explores 'scenic realism' in the major novels of Thomas Hardy and Joseph ConradOffers the first book-length study of connections between these two major authors bringing new approaches to bear on often-taught worksProvides an understanding of impressionist styles of writing that is drawn from contemporary empirical scienceTells a progressive chronological story of both authors' use of the senses in their fictionArgues for a distinctive place for Hardy and Conrad in late-Victorian fiction which challenges the narrative of a modernist rupture with Victorian realismSupported by wide reading in nineteenth-century science and letters, and comprehensive knowledge of twentieth century criticism of the two novelistsThis book reads the highly descriptive impressionist writings of Hardy and Conrad together in the light of a shared attention to sight and sound. With a focus on nature and the environment, Hugh Epstein analyses thirteen of these powerful works in the historical company of contemporary discussions in Victorian science. He takes them beyond their 'Victorian' and 'Modernist' labels to show how vivid and urgent these novels are for the modern reader.

Book Synopsis The Speeds of Light by : Harry H. Mark
Download or read book The Speeds of Light written by Harry H. Mark and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves to update knowledge about light with the help of new actual data derived from the easily reproducible experiments described therein. They form the basis of a new theory that interprets up-to-date verifiable information according to the various speeds of the lights involved. In view of recent rapid advances in technology, one may be surprised to learn that at least two of the basic tenets of optics are over a thousand years old, namely the law of reflection, over two millennia old, and the law of reciprocity, which has not changed for over a thousand years. The aim of this treatise is to update our knowledge about light with the help of new actual data derived from easily reproducible experiments. Since light is in space and requires time for its motion, these terms are defined as the basis of actual new observations. Similarly, the second chapter furnishes a brief historical background. The chapter "Light Speed in Media" reports relevant new and old experiments with up-to-date interpretations while "Speeds in Space" examines anew light's general motions in space.
