It is also someone who now has a good deal of influence and power in the little town of Ox Crossing. Someone who won't want his past catching up with him. However, before Joe can do anything about his discovery, the man he has recognized acts quickly and Joe is silenced. Permanently. It is then up to his old army buddy, Nat Leach, to discover the identity of the person behind Joe's murder. But Nat is pursuing his own personal mission: tracking down the men who slaughtered two members of his family while he was away fighting a war. And he's getting close to finding them, even though they, too, have new identities. Nat soon learns that he has taken on two perilous quests, and that he could end up like his old army buddy. Dead.

Book excerpt: "Feeding Ghosts reminds us how much the personal is political . . . an audacious, awe-inspiring feat. For me, it was an essential read." —Ling Ma, author of Bliss Montage An astonishing, deeply moving graphic memoir about three generations of Chinese women, exploring love, grief, exile, and identity. In her evocative, genre-defying graphic memoir, Tessa Hulls tells the story of three generations of women in her family: her Chinese grandmother, Sun Yi; her mother, Rose; and herself. Sun Yi was a Shanghai journalist caught in the political crosshairs of the 1949 Communist victory. After eight years of government harassment, she fled to Hong Kong with her daughter. Upon arrival, Sun Yi wrote a bestselling memoir about her persecution and survival, used the proceeds to put Rose in an elite boarding school—and promptly had a breakdown that left her committed to a mental institution. Rose eventually came to the United States on a scholarship and brought Sun Yi to live with her. Tessa watched her mother care for Sun Yi, both of them struggling under the weight of Sun Yi's unexamined trauma and mental illness. Vowing to escape her mother’s smothering fear, Tessa left home and traveled to the farthest-flung corners of the globe (Antarctica). But at the age of thirty, it starts to feel less like freedom and more like running away, and she returns home to face the history that shaped her family. Extensively researched and gorgeously rendered, Feeding Ghosts is Hulls’s homecoming, a vivid journey into the beating heart of one family, set against the dark backdrop of Chinese history. By turns fascinating and heartbreaking, inventive and poignant, Feeding Ghosts exposes the fear and trauma that haunt generations, and the love that holds them together.

Book excerpt: As adjutant of the Battalion Washing-ton Artillery of New Orleans, William Miller Owen was in an ideal position to observe his unit's inner workings. During his service, which spanned the entire war, he drafted and received orders; fought at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Chickamauga; and endured the siege at Petersburg. Well acquainted with the officer corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, Owen chatted with General James Longstreet, took rides with General Robert E. Lee, and dined with President Jefferson Davis.Based on Owen's diary from these years, this volume brings to life the major figures and battles of the Army of Northern Virginia as well as lesser-known Civil War episodes. For this new edition, Nathaniel Cheairs Hughes, Jr., has provided an index and a new introduction that places the diary in the context of Civil War historiography.

Realizing at the time of his service the importance of an accurate, objective account of his exploits, Owen set out to keep a record of the events up until the surrender of General Lee. Later, using his own diary as a starting point, he compiled a manuscript for publication. This is his account. Owen hoped that his manuscript would be used for the compiling of later histories. It includes a detailed record from the Battle of Bull Run to Appomattox and Spanish Fort, along with illustrated maps and engravings. This is an exact reproduction of Owen's manuscript, with the addition of three illustrations.

In addition to interviews from David Sedaris, George Takei, Barney Frank, and Tammy Baldwin, Travels in a Gay Nation brings us lesser-known voices a retired Naval officer, a transgender scholar and drag king, a Princeton philosopher, two opera sopranos who happen to be lovers, an indie rock musician, the founder of a gay frat house, and a pair of Vermont garden designers. In this age when contemporary gay America is still coming under attack, Gambone captures the humanity of each individual. For some, their identity as a sexual minority is crucial to their life s work; for others, it has been less so, perhaps even irrelevant. But, whether splashy or quiet, center-stage or behind the scenes, Gambone s subjects have managed despite facing ignorance, fear, hatred, intolerance, injustice, violence, ridicule, or just plain indifference to construct passionate, inspiring lives. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: June 1863. The American Civil War was two years old, and the U.S. Army in Virginia was in chaos. Reeling after the recent defeat at Chancellorsville, the Federals, especially the Cavalry Corps, scrambled to regroup. Confederate general Robert E. Lee seized the moment to launch a second invasion of the North. As Lee slipped away, frantic Federal leaders asked, "Where are the Rebels?" At this critical moment, the much-maligned Federal cavalry stepped to center stage. Small but Important Riots is a tactical study of fighting from June 17 to 22, 1863, at Aldie, Middleburg, and Upperville, placed within the strategic context of the Gettysburg campaign. It is based on Robert O'Neill's thirty years of research and access to previously unpublished documents, which reveal startling new information. Since the fighting in Loudoun Valley of Virginia ended in June 1863, one perspective has prevailed--that Brigadier General Alfred Pleasonton, who commanded the Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac, disobeyed orders. According to published records, Pleasonton's superiors, including President Abraham Lincoln, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, and army commander Joseph Hooker, ordered Pleasonton to search for General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia during a critical stage of the Gettysburg campaign, and Pleasonton ignored their orders. Recently discovered documents--discussed in this book--prove otherwise.
