This book is not for the girl who doesn't want to hear that the reality of love and relationships can't be found in your favorite rom-com. It's for the girls who want to know that some other girl is just as embarrassing and emotionally screwed up as them, and there is hope...maybe. This is for the girls who know there are rules to dating, even when you don't want to follow them-and you don't always have to follow them. It's about knowing you're one hot bitch and you do what you want because, well...fuck it.

Book excerpt: Winner, 2020 Body and Embodiment Best Publication Award, given by the American Sociological Association Honorable Mention, 2020 Sociology of Sex and Gender Distinguished Book Award, given by the American Sociological Association How the female body has been racialized for over two hundred years There is an obesity epidemic in this country and poor black women are particularly stigmatized as “diseased” and a burden on the public health care system. This is only the most recent incarnation of the fear of fat black women, which Sabrina Strings shows took root more than two hundred years ago. Strings weaves together an eye-opening historical narrative ranging from the Renaissance to the current moment, analyzing important works of art, newspaper and magazine articles, and scientific literature and medical journals—where fat bodies were once praised—showing that fat phobia, as it relates to black women, did not originate with medical findings, but with the Enlightenment era belief that fatness was evidence of “savagery” and racial inferiority. The author argues that the contemporary ideal of slenderness is, at its very core, racialized and racist. Indeed, it was not until the early twentieth century, when racialized attitudes against fatness were already entrenched in the culture, that the medical establishment began its crusade against obesity. An important and original work, Fearing the Black Body argues convincingly that fat phobia isn’t about health at all, but rather a means of using the body to validate race, class, and gender prejudice.

Book excerpt: The situationship is fun and fine until it starts affecting your mental health and self-esteem. Like a relationship, it has many of the benefits, but without the commitment or clarity. At the beginning, that’s pretty fun, exciting and carefree. It’s when one person inevitably becomes more attached and emotionally invested than the other that the emotional nightmare begins. There ensues a lot of coming and going, highs and lows, conversations that don’t get us anywhere, and an exhausting hope that they might finally realise our worth and ‘choose’ us! We fall into the 4 toxic traps of the situationship: 1. The emotional addiction 2. The pedestal 3. Falling for potential 4. Familiarity (which does not equal healthy) These dynamics can keep us stuck and anxious, totally available to the other person whenever it suits them, and struggling to cut off the connection. If you are ready to: • Realise & embody your true worth and value • Set and communicate powerful boundaries • Take your power back and start choosing better for yourself • Become attracted to safe & healthy partners • Never settle for less again Then this guide and workbook is the medicine you need to step into that next version of you, and align with the kind of relationship you truly want.

Book excerpt: Western culture has endlessly represented the ways in which love miraculously erupts in people’s lives, the mythical moment in which one knows someone is destined for us, the feverish waiting for a phone call or an email, the thrill that runs down our spine at the mere thought of him or her. Yet, a culture that has so much to say about love is virtually silent on the no less mysterious moments when we avoid falling in love, where we fall out of love, when the one who kept us awake at night now leaves us indifferent, or when we hurry away from those who excited us a few months or even a few hours before. In The End of Love, Eva Illouz documents the multifarious ways in which relationships end. She argues that if modern love was once marked by the freedom to enter sexual and emotional bonds according to one’s will and choice, contemporary love has now become characterized by practices of non-choice, the freedom to withdraw from relationships. Illouz dubs this process by which relationships fade, evaporate, dissolve, and break down “unloving.” While sociology has classically focused on the formation of social bonds, The End of Love makes a powerful case for studying why and how social bonds collapse and dissolve. Particularly striking is the role that capitalism plays in practices of non-choice and “unloving.” The unmaking of social bonds, she argues, is connected to contemporary capitalism which is characterized by practices of non-commitment and non-choice, practices that enable the quick withdrawal from a transaction and the quick realignment of prices and the breaking of loyalties. Unloving and non-choice have in turn a profound impact on society and economics as they explain why people may be having fewer children, increasingly living alone, and having less sex. The End of Love presents a profound and original analysis of the effects of capitalism and consumer culture on personal relationships and of what the dissolution of personal relationships means for capitalism.

Book excerpt: It is at the point where you are no longer ashamed or embarrassed by the key components of your process that purpose is released to freely express itself through you to your world and your sphere(s) of influence. What portions of your process have you empowered to hold you back? From Stagnation to Transformation is Clifton Pettyjohn’s emancipation proclamation from years of torpidity. Stagnation is not merely the absence of productivity but rather it is the art of producing beneath your abilities or beneath the quality of production associated with the essence of your purpose. Therefore, this book is not only for individuals in search of their purpose but also for those who are capable of cognitively expressing their purpose but lack the ability to generate the required amount of energy to consistently produce with purpose.
