Book excerpt: The use of plant growth regulators (PGR) on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) to balance vegetative and reproductive production in the cotton plant is important to the success of crop production. The objectives of this study were: 1) to evaluate the use of color-infrared aerial imagery to model cotton growth status and prescribe variable-rate applications of plant growth regulators (PGR), 2) to examine the use of current recommendation methods in making variable-rate PGR applications by examining cotton growth, yield, and lint quality response to varying rates of PGR under different soil and environmental conditions, and 3) to determine the economic feasibility of an image-based, variable-rate PGR application system. Research was conducted in 1997, 1998, and 2005 at six on-farm sites in North Carolina. Grid sampling was done weekly during the growing season to record cotton plant parameters. Relationships between these parameters and digital pixel values were calculated using correlation and linear regression. Relationships were discovered between near infrared aerial imagery and cotton height, that were capable of modeling the variability of crop status throughout a field. Near infrared vegetation indices consistently accounted for more than 50% of the variation in cotton height in study fields. This indicates that remote sensing could be used to make variable-rate PGR application recommendations. At most of the sites, including sites in the same field on different soil series, a low rate of PGR applied one time was enough to improve lint yield and lint quality. The lack of site by PGR rate interactions indicated little opportunity to improve yield by varying rates of PGR. However, this research found that current recommendations for applying PGR were not applicable to making variable-rate PGR treatments. Book excerpt: This study evaluated the applicability of remote sensing instrumentation for site-specific management of abiotic and biotic stress on cotton grown under a center pivot. Three different irrigation regimes (100%, 75%, and 50% ETc) were imposed on a cotton field to 1) monitor canopy temperatures of cotton with infrared thermometers (IRTs) in order to pinpoint areas of biotic and abiotic stress, 2) compare aerial infrared photography to IRTs mounted on center pivots to correlate areas of biotic and abiotic stress, and 3) relate yield to canopy temperatures. Pivot-mounted IRTs and IR camera were able to differentiate water stress between the irrigation regimes, however, only the IR camera was effectively able to distinguish between biotic (cotton root rot) and abiotic (drought) stress with the assistance of groundtruthing. The 50% ETc regime had significantly higher canopy temperatures, which were reflected in significantly lower lint yields when compared to the 75% and 100% ETc regimes. Deficit irrigation up to 75% ETc had no impact on yield, indicating that water savings were possible without yield depletion.

Book excerpt: Cotton production efficiency has the potential to increase through accurate variable rate application of fertilizer. The ability to variably apply fertilizer already exists. However, an accurate real-time system capable of diagnosing fertilizer deficiencies has yet to be implemented. A ground-based remote sensing system with modulated illumination has been developed for diagnosing nitrogen status in cotton plants. Development of the system was in part based on recommendations from previous research conducted at The University of Tennessee. The prototyped system consists of a multi-spectral sensing unit, a data acquisition and processing unit, and a graphical user interface. The multi-spectral sensing unit utilizes a discriminating artificial illumination source to eliminate error associated with the use of sunlight. Solar angle and atmospheric filtering contribute to variability in light intensity. Narrow spectrum ultra bright LEDs (blue, green, red, and infrared) with peak wavelengths of 466, 540, 644, and 880 nm were used. Modulated light at a frequency of 18.9 kHz was focused into a scanning beam and reflected from the plant canopy. Reflected light from the plant canopy was converted to voltage signals representing reflected light intensity at each waveband. A band pass filter was implemented to pass only the signal due to the modulated light source. The data acquisition and processing system was developed for control of the multi-spectral sensing unit and reliable data collection and processing. The prototyped system was tested on DP451 BRR cotton with four different N application rates. Based on a nitrate analysis, three nitrogen status classifications were identified: low, medium, and high. Analysis of spectral data collected revealed reflected light energy in the red region produced the highest linear correlation with N status (r = -0.7285). A feed forward neural network was trained to predict nitrogen status based on the four spectral measurements taken with the prototyped system. System performance was evaluated based on its ability to correctly classify N status. Results indicate that the system is capable of diagnosing nitrogen status in cotton with a high degree of accuracy. Using dynamically ("1 mi/hr) acquired data, prediction accuracies as high as 91% were achieved when 50% of data was used for training and 50% used for testing. Accuracy decreased slightly to 90% when 25% of the data was used for training and 75% used for testing. Utilizing neural networks, the prototyped system out performed the conventional NDVI andother linear techniques. The system has shown great potential in diagnosing N status in cotton under controlled field conditions. Future testing should be performed to evaluate the system for multiple varieties, growing seasons, and other variables known to contribute to plant health variability.
