Miranda Eva Stanyon rereads and resounds this crucial aesthetic category in English and German literatures of the long eighteenth century from a musical perspective and shows how sonorous sublimes lay at the heart of a central and transformative discourse. For Enlightenment and Romantic era listeners, the musical sublime represented a sonic encounter of the most extreme kind, one that tested what humans were capable of feeling, imagining, thinking, and therefore becoming. The sublime and music have not always sung from the same hymn sheet, Stanyon observes. She charts an antagonistic intimacy between the two, from the sublime's rise to prominence in the later seventeenth century, through the upheavals associated with Kant in the late eighteenth century, and their reverberations in the nineteenth. Offering readings of canonical texts by Longinus, Dryden, Burke, Klopstock, Herder, Coleridge, De Quincey, and others alongside lesser-known figures, she shows how the literary sublime was inextricable from musical culture, from folksongs and ballads to psalmody, polychoral sacred music, and opera. Deeply interdisciplinary, Resounding the Sublime draws literature into dialogue with sound studies, musicology, and intellectual and cultural history to offer new perspectives on the sublime as a phenomenon which crossed media, disciplines, and cultures. An interdisciplinary study of sound in history, the book recovers varieties of the sublime crucial for understanding both the period it covers and the genealogy of modern and postmodern aesthetic discourses. Standard accounts of the aesthetic theories of this era hold that the idea of mimesis was supplanted by the far more robust and compelling doctrines of taste and aesthetic judgment. Since the idea of mimesis was taken to apply only in the relation of art to nature, it was judged to be too limited when the focus of aesthetics changed to questions about the constitution of individual subjects in regard to taste. Tom Huhn argues that mimesis, rather than disappearing, instead became a far more pervasive idea in the eighteenth century by becoming submerged within the dynamics of the emerging accounts of judgment and taste. Mimesis also thereby became enmeshed in the ideas of sociality contained, often only implicitly, within the new accounts of aesthetic judgment. The book proceeds by reading three of the foundational treatises in aesthetics&—Burke&’s Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful, Hogarth&’s Analysis of Beauty, and Kant&’s Critique of Judgment&—with an eye for discerning where arguments and analyses betray mimetic structures. Huhn attempts to explicate these books anew by arguing that they are pervaded by a mimetic dynamic. Overall, he seeks to provoke a reconsideration of eighteenth-century aesthetics that centers on its continuity with traditional notions of mimesis.

Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: This paper deals with the valuation of property in a global context and discusses contemporary and evolving issues that might affect property valuation standards and practice in Germany and in the United Kingdom. It shows the need, the development and the growing acceptance of International Valuations Standards (IVS) published by the International Valuations Standards Committee and identifies valuations for financial reporting as the key driving force behind the ambition of harmonising valuation standards. Additionally, the major differences between valuation standards and practice in Germany and the UK are examined, the interrelationship between and the discussion about three concurring set of standards (namely Red Book, Blue Book and White Book) is presented and the importance of Market Value as the central underlying definition of value is highlighted. Then the parallel development of International Accounting Standards (IAS) and their adoption within the European Union from 2005 onwards is explained and it is shown that this reinforces the position and the acceptance of IVS. Furthermore, the major differences between IAS, German and UK Generally Accepted Accounting Practice regarding the treatment of real estate are shown and the possible consequences for the valuation of fixed assets are derived. Also the New Basel Capital Accord (Basel II) which determines the way how banks have to allocate capital is identified as another area of interest for the valuation profession. For this reason the methodology of Basel II is explained briefly and the problems and consequences regarding the treatment and valuation of real estate that evolve out of an application of Basel II are explored. Finally, other areas of interest that might determine the future of property valuation are addressed, notably the issue of sustainability. It is shown that there are numerous benefits of sustainable buildings, that the client demand for them is rising and that valuers will have to consider this aspect because it will affect the Market Value of the property. Book excerpt: Nearly twenty-five hundred years ago the Greek thinker Heraclitus supposedly uttered the cryptic words "Phusis kruptesthai philei." How the aphorism, usually translated as "Nature loves to hide," has haunted Western culture ever since is the subject of this engaging study by Pierre Hadot. Taking the allegorical figure of the veiled goddess Isis as a guide, and drawing on the work of both the ancients and later thinkers such as Goethe, Rilke, Wittgenstein, and Heidegger, Hadot traces successive interpretations of Heraclitus' words. Over time, Hadot finds, "Nature loves to hide" has meant that all that lives tends to die; that Nature wraps herself in myths; and (for Heidegger) that Being unveils as it veils itself. Meanwhile the pronouncement has been used to explain everything from the opacity of the natural world to our modern angst. From these kaleidoscopic exegeses and usages emerge two contradictory approaches to nature: the Promethean, or experimental-questing, approach, which embraces technology as a means of tearing the veil from Nature and revealing her secrets; and the Orphic, or contemplative-poetic, approach, according to which such a denuding of Nature is a grave trespass. In place of these two attitudes Hadot proposes one suggested by the Romantic vision of Rousseau, Goethe, and Schelling, who saw in the veiled Isis an allegorical expression of the sublime. "Nature is art and art is nature," Hadot writes, inviting us to embrace Isis and all she represents: art makes us intensely aware of how completely we ourselves are not merely surrounded by nature but also part of nature.
