Book excerpt: "Meteorological properties of the tundra are treated within the context of a general ecosystem model. The biosphere is placed in the role of an active interface within a stack of horizontally uniform physical layers under the influence of incident solar radiation as a demonstrably dominant exogenous state variable. Diurnal variation of the thermodynamic states of these physical layers is calculated as the solution of differential equations governing the diffusion of heat and moisture. The results of numerical experiments then demonstrate that atmospheric moisture and temperature, during the biotically active summertime, are influenced by the meteorogical experience of the immediately preceding spring via the summertime level of the permafrost boundary to a degree that is at least comparable to the effect of daily fluctuations in cloud cover and prevailing winds"--Leaf v

Book Synopsis From Observations To Simulations: A Conceptual Introduction To Weather And Climate Modelling by : Antonello Pasini

This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Observations to Simulations leads us on a fascinating journey through the methods used for the scientific analysis of complex systems such as the atmosphere and the Earth system: from meteorology and climatology, as observational sciences, to the development of models and the use of computers as virtual laboratories. In plain, accessible language, avoiding technicalities, but highlighting the conceptually meaningful aspects, the book describes this “Copernican revolution” in meteorology and climatology, a change in methodological paradigm that rigorously tests the definition of some classical concepts, such as “causality” and “prediction.” This is the first book that guides the general public (and sets the specialists thinking) through research on complex systems which is contributing to a change in our outlook on nature.

This book was released on 2022-04-30 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for assessing the science related to climate change. It provides policymakers with regular assessments of the scientific basis of human-induced climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation. This IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate is the most comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the observed and projected changes to the ocean and cryosphere and their associated impacts and risks, with a focus on resilience, risk management response options, and adaptation measures, considering both their potential and limitations. It brings together knowledge on physical and biogeochemical changes, the interplay with ecosystem changes, and the implications for human communities. It serves policymakers, decision makers, stakeholders, and all interested parties with unbiased, up-to-date, policy-relevant information. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
