Book excerpt: Les progrès effectués dans le domaine des instruments optiques permettent d’envisager désormais de placer des capteurs à moyenne résolution spatiale et haute résolution spectrale sur des orbites géostationnaires ce qui permettrait d’observer la Terre à la fois avec une moyenne résolution spatiale, une bonne résolution spectrale et une haute résolution temporelle, ce que ne permettent pas les satellites héliosynchrones. L'objectif de cette thèse est donc de simuler les images en luminance qui seraient acquises par un capteur géostationnaire hypothétique dédié à l'observation de la couleur de l'océan, afin de caractériser les images qui seraient acquises, de spécifier les futurs instruments et de valider des algorithmes de traitement sur des images réalistes. Pour parvenir à simuler les luminances spectrales qui seraient mesurées par le capteur, nous avons combiné les modèles de transfert radiatif directs de l'eau (Hydrolight) et de l'atmosphère (MODTRAN). Les données d’entrée d’Hydrolight ont été déduites des données provenant des cartes climatologiques de GlobColour (chlorophylle, matières minérales et organiques en suspension) pour simuler des images de couverture globale (Global Area Coverage) d'un capteur géostationnaire à basse résolution spatiale, moyenne résolution spectrale et haute résolution temporelle. L'analyse de ces images permet de déterminer la gamme de luminances pour chaque bande spectrale et pour différentes acquisitions au cours de la journée. Les résultats indiquent aussi les limites angulaires pour éviter le phénomène du sunglint et pour assurer un niveau minimum de luminance provenant de l'eau, contenu dans le signal mesuré. Les images en luminance ainsi simulées ont permis d’évaluer aussi la performance d’un algorithme d'estimation de concentration en chlorophylle de rapport de bandes dans les eaux au large. Les résultats montrent que l'erreur d'estimation est moyennement sensible aux angles d'observation et d’éclairement, importants dans les images géostationnaires.

New and senior scholars of archaeology and environmental science explore the timing and intensity of droughts and provide a nuanced understanding of socio-ecological dynamics, with specific reference to what makes communities resilient or vulnerable when faced with environmental change.Contributors recognize the existence of four droughts that correlate with periods of demographic and political decline and identify a variety of concurrent political and social issues. They argue that these primary underlying factors were exacerbated by drought conditions and ultimately led to societal transitions that were by no means uniform across various sites and subregions. Book excerpt: Recent realizations that prehispanic cities in Mesoamerica were fundamentally different from western cities of the same period have led to increasing examination of the neighborhood as an intermediate unit at the heart of prehispanic urbanization. This book addresses the subject of neighborhoods in archaeology as analytical units between households and whole settlements. The contributions gathered here provide fieldwork data to document the existence of sociopolitically distinct neighborhoods within ancient Mesoamerican settlements, building upon recent advances in multi-scale archaeological studies of these communities. Chapters illustrate the cultural variation across Mesoamerica, including data and interpretations on several different cities with a thematic focus on regional contrasts. This topic is relatively new and complex, and this book is a strong contribution for three interwoven reasons. First, the long history of research on the “Teotihuacan barrios” is scrutinized and withstands the test of new evidence and comparison with other Mesoamerican cities.
