Book excerpt: This publication summarizes the methodology, and presents the conclusions of the modeling phase of the Seismic Retrofitting Project (SRP) carried out by TecMinho, University of Minho, Portugal. Using four Peruvian buildings representative of typologies of historic earthen construction in Latin America, the SRP relies on traditional construction techniques as well as state-of-the-art methods to design and test easy-to-implement seismic retrofitting techniques and maintenance programs to improve the structural performance of earthen historic buildings in Peru and other countries in Latin America. From 2015 until 2017, the University of Minho developed advanced numerical models to understand the structural behavior of the SRP buildings. These models were also employed to validate the retrofitting techniques designed by the SRP partners and consultants. The report provides a review of advanced structural analysis techniques, guidance for finite element modeling users, an overview of constitutive models, and two examples (one of validation and one of application). The publication intends to help professionals and researchers, in the field of structural engineering, with the assessment of historic earthen structures using advanced numerical modeling techniques. This publication is part of a series within the SRP that intends to provide professionals and researchers in the field of structural engineering with a methodology for the assessment of historic earthen structures using advanced numerical modeling techniques. The other reports that are part of the modeling phase are Modeling of Prototype Buildings and Simplified Calculations for the Structural Analysis of Earthen Historic Sites.

Book excerpt: This publication summarizes and describes the conclusions of more than 300 experimental tests carried out from 2011 to 2014 as part of the Seismic Retrofitting Project (SRP), and characterizes the material properties and structural behavior of the components of the four building prototypes selected for this project. The SRP aims to design and test easy-to-implement seismic retrofitting techniques, both traditional and state-of-the art, as well as maintenance programs that improve the structural performance of earthen historic buildings in Peru and other countries in Latin America. The performed tests were developed and carried out by the Escuela de Ciencias de Ingeniería of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) in collaboration with the Getty and SRP consultants. Some of these tests were performed for the first time on earthen materials and/or structural components, providing valuable information to the field. Therefore, this publication is of significant value to engineers and conservation architects working in seismic areas. Partial results of this testing program have been published in the proceedings of several international conferences. However, this publication provides a more comprehensive overview and a deeper understanding of the mechanical behavior of materials and structural components of historic earthen buildings in Peru. The performed tests also provided valuable information to the numerical models that have been developed by TecMinho, University of Minho, Portugal to analyze the seismic capacity of each of the building prototypes. The results of this modeling phase are the subject of the SRP publications: Recommendations for Advanced Modeling of Historic Earthen Sites; Modeling of Prototype Buildings; and, Simplified Calculations for the Structural Analysis of Earthen Historic Sites.

Book excerpt: The successful preservation of an historic building, complex or city depends on the continued use and daily care that come with it. The possibility of continued use depends on the adaptation of the building to modern standards and practice of living, requiring changes in constructional or structural features. Conservation engineering is the process of understanding, interpreting and managing the architectural heritage to safely deliver it to posterity, enhancing private or public utility vis a vis minimum loss of fabric and significance. These two objectives are sometimes conflicting. With increasing global interest in conservation engineering it is essential to open the debate on more inclusive definitions of significance and on more articulated concepts of safety by use of acceptable and reliable technologies, integrating further the activity of all the professions involved in conservation.

Book excerpt: Vernacular architecture in general and earthen architecture in particular, with their rich variety of forms worldwide, are custodians of the material culture and identity of the peoples who built them. In addition, they are widely recognized as ancestral examples of sustainability in all their variants and interpretations, and the architecture of the present ought to learn from these when designing the sustainable architecture of the future. The conservation of these architectures – seemingly simple yet full of wisdom – is to be undertaken now given their intrinsic value and their status as genuine examples of sustainability to be learnt from and interpreted in contemporary architecture. Vernacular and earthen architecture: Conservation and Sustainability will be a valuable source of information for academics and professionals in the fields of Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Construction and Building Engineering and Architecture.

Book excerpt: A balanced approach to structural analysis, including both classical techniques and computer-based analysis The second edition of Structural Analysis: Understanding Behavior a team delivers a complete approach to the subject, expertly balancing the classical techniques of analysis with computer-based analysis experiences involving parametric studies. The book provides students with foundational knowledge in the concepts that come from studying a subset of classical techniques, and strengthens this foundation with the use of structural analysis software in activities designed to promote self-discovery of structural concepts and behaviors. Most problem sets include parametric exercises that are designed to let students discover the influence that various modeling parameters have upon the response of structures. Practicing engineers influenced topical coverage, such as the inclusion of the chapter on the lateral load path in a building and its relevant components ̄a topic for which many graduating students would otherwise find themselves ill prepared. The author has also provided video examples for each chapter demonstrating the processes in the text, and showing problems worked out from start to finish.

Book excerpt: The conservation of monuments and historic sites is one of the most challenging problems facing modern civilization. It involves, in inextricable patterns, factors belonging to different fields (cultural, humanistic, social, technical, economical, administrative) and the requirements of safety and use appear to be (or often are) in conflict with the respect of the integrity of the monuments. The complexity of the topic is such that a shared framework of reference is still lacking among art historians, architects, structural and geotechnical engineers. The complexity of the subject is such that a shared frame of reference is still lacking among art historians, architects, architectural and geotechnical engineers. And while there are exemplary cases of an integral approach to each building element with its static and architectural function, as a material witness to the culture and construction techniques of the original historical period, there are still examples of uncritical reliance on modern technology leading to the substitution from earlier structures to new ones, preserving only the iconic look of the original monument. Geotechnical Engineering for the Preservation of Monuments and Historic Sites III collects the contributions to the eponymous 3rd International ISSMGE TC301 Symposium (Naples, Italy, 22-24 June 2022). The papers cover a wide range of topics, which include: - Principles of conservation, maintenance strategies, case histories - The knowledge: investigations and monitoring - Seismic risk, site effects, soil structure interaction - Effects of urban development and tunnelling on built heritage - Preservation of diffuse heritage: soil instability, subsidence, environmental damages The present volume aims at geotechnical engineers and academics involved in the preservation of monuments and historic sites worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years after the publication of the first English edition of The History of the Theory of Structures, Dr. Kurrer now gives us a much enlarged second edition with a new subtitle: Searching for Equilibrium. The author invites the reader to take part in a journey through time to explore the equilibrium of structures. That journey starts with the emergence of the statics and strength of materials of Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo, and reaches its first climax with Coulomb's structural theories for beams, earth pressure and arches in the late 18th century. Over the next 100 years, Navier, Culmann, Maxwell, Rankine, Mohr, Castigliano and Müller-Breslau moulded theory of structures into a fundamental engineering science discipline that - in the form of modern structural mechanics - played a key role in creating the design languages of the steel, reinforced concrete, aircraft, automotive and shipbuilding industries in the 20th century. In his portrayal, the author places the emphasis on the formation and development of modern numerical engineering methods such as FEM and describes their integration into the discipline of computational mechanics. Brief insights into customary methods of calculation backed up by historical facts help the reader to understand the history of structural mechanics and earth pressure theory from the point of view of modern engineering practice. This approach also makes a vital contribution to the teaching of engineers. Dr. Kurrer manages to give us a real feel for the different approaches of the players involved through their engineering science profiles and personalities, thus creating awareness for the social context. The 260 brief biographies convey the subjective aspect of theory of structures and structural mechanics from the early years of the modern era to the present day. Civil and structural engineers and architects are well represented, but there are also biographies of mathematicians, physicists, mechanical engineers and aircraft and ship designers. The main works of these protagonists of theory of structures are reviewed and listed at the end of each biography. Besides the acknowledged figures in theory of structures such as Coulomb, Culmann, Maxwell, Mohr, Müller-Breslau, Navier, Rankine, Saint-Venant, Timoshenko and Westergaard, the reader is also introduced to G. Green, A. N. Krylov, G. Li, A. J. S. Pippard, W. Prager, H. A. Schade, A. W. Skempton, C. A. Truesdell, J. A. L. Waddell and H. Wagner. The pioneers of the modern movement in theory of structures, J. H. Argyris, R. W. Clough, T. v. Kármán, M. J. Turner and O. C. Zienkiewicz, are also given extensive biographical treatment. A huge bibliography of about 4,500 works rounds off the book. New content in the second edition deals with earth pressure theory, ultimate load method, an analysis of historical textbooks, steel bridges, lightweight construction, theory of plates and shells, Green's function, computational statics, FEM, computer-assisted graphical analysis and historical engineering science. The number of pages now exceeds 1,200 - an increase of 50% over the first English edition. This book is the first all-embracing historical account of theory of structures from the 16th century to the present day.

Book excerpt: This book provides the reader with a review of the most relevant research on the structural characterization and seismic retrofitting of adobe construction. It offers a complete review of the latest research developments, and hence the relevance of the field. The book starts with an introductory discussion on adobe construction and its use throughout the world over time, highlighting characteristics and performance of adobe masonry structures as well as different contributions for cultural heritage conservation (Chapter 1). Then, the seismic behaviour of adobe masonry buildings is addressed, including examples of real performance during recent earthquakes (Chapter 2). In the following chapters, key research investigations on seismic response assessment and retrofitting of adobe constructions are reviewed. The review deals with the following issues: mechanical characterization of adobe bricks and adobe masonry (Chapters 3 and 4); quasi-static and shaking table testing of adobe masonry walls and structures (Chapters 5 and 6); non-destructive and minor-destructive testing for characterization of adobe constructions (Chapter 7); seismic strengthening techniques for adobe constructions (Chapter 8); and numerical modelling of adobe structures (Chapter 9). The book ends with Chapter 10, where some general conclusions are drawn and research needs are identified. Each chapter is co-authored by a group of experts from different countries to comprehensively address all issues of adobe constructions from a worldwide perspective. The information covered in this book is fundamental to support civil engineers and architects in the rehabilitation and strengthening of existing adobe constructions and also in the design of new adobe buildings. This information is also of interest to researchers, by providing a summary of existing research and suggesting possible directions for future research efforts.
