Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs and Poems of the South The Poetry of a country should be a faithful expression of its physical and moral characteristics. The imagery, at least, should be drawn from the indigenous objects of the region, and the sentiments be such as naturally arise under the influence of its climate, its institutions, habits of life, and social condition. Verse, so fashioned and colored, is as much the genuine product and growth of a Land, as its trees or flowers. It partakes of the raciness of the soil, the purity of the atmosphere, the brilliancy of its skies, its mountain pictures, and its broad sweeps of level and undulating territory. The Scenery infuses itself into the Song; and the feelings and fancies are modulated by the circumstances amid which they had their birth. These opinions have formed the poetic Faith of the writer of the present volume. He has not attempted to sing in a mere spirit of imitativeness, or in the tropes and metaphors of foreign Art and Precedent. Gazing upon the delightful Land about him - the Land of his birth and affections - he has endeavored to depict its beauties, - to weave its illustrative objects into the tissues of his imagination, and to give utterance to the thoughts and emotions congenial to a mind impressed by such associations, and loving at once the Patriotic and the Beautiful. For this reason, the writer has felt warranted in styling the contents of the present volume, "Songs and Poems of the South." If they possess any merit, it is in their fidelity to the principles just declared. But the writer is still well aware of their deficiency, even in that respect. She has had access to more than one private collection of verses by Southern writers, and has thus been able to embody here many lyrics that lived a brief and fugitive life in the newspapers of their time and were then forgotten. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Folk Songs From the Southern Appalachians: Comprising 122 Songs and Ballads, and 323 Tunes Economically they are independent. As there are practically no available markets, little or no surplus produce is grown, each family extracting from its holding just what is needed to support life, and no more. They have very little money, barter in kind being the customary form of exchange. Many set the standard of bodily and material comfort perilously low, in order, presumably, that they may have the more leisure and so extract the maximum enjoyment out of life. The majority live in log-cabins, more or less water-tight, usually, but not always, lighted with windows; but some have built larger and more comfortable homesteads. They area leisurely, cheery people in their quiet way, in whom the social instinct is very highly developed. They dispense hospitality with an openhanded generosity and are extremely interested in and friendly toward strangers, communicative and unsuspicious. But surely you will tarry with us for the night? Was said to us on more than one occasion when, after paying an afternoon's visit, we rose to say good-bye. They know their Bible intimately and subscribe to an austere creed, charged with Calvinism and the unrelenting doctrines of determinism or fatalism. The majority we met were Baptists, but we met Methodists also, a few Presbyterians, and some who are attached to what is known as the Holiness sect, with whom, however, we had but little truck, as their creed forbids the singing of secular songs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ye Olden Time Songs of a Simple Life On my return to the city, I requested a music house to obtain copies of as many of the original prints of these songs as was possible to find. It has seemed apparent to me that the people were tiring of the songs and music of the present day, and would gladly welcome a return to the old-time songs of happier and simpler days, if given an Opportunity to do so. In this belief and feeling that our aged relatives and friends would enjoy hearing again the purer and more pathetic songs of the long ago, I have published the selections in this volume and, as nearly as possible, reproduced the old familiar titles, music and words as when first published. If the Old Time Songs give pleasure to others, and serve to drive away loneliness, as they did for me in the old farm house in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, mv object will have been accomplished.
