Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Punjab, ‘the pride of British India’, attracted the cream of the Indian Civil Service, many of the most influential of whom were Irish. Some of these men, along with Irish viceroys, were inspired by their Irish backgrounds to ensure security of tenure for the Punjabi peasant, besides developing vast irrigation schemes which resulted in the province becoming India’s most affluent. But similar inspiration contributed to the severity of measures taken against Indian nationalist dissent, culminating in the Amritsar massacre which so catastrophically transformed politics on the sub-continent. Setting the experiences of Irish public servants in Punjab in the context of the Irish diaspora and of linked agrarian problems in Ireland and India, this book descrides the beneficial effects the Irish had on the prosperity of India’s most volatile province. Alongside the baleful contribution of some towards a growing Indian antipathy towards British rule. Links are established between policies pursued by Irishmen of the Victorian era and current happenings on the Pakistan-Afghan border and in Punjab.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perched among peaks that loom over heat-shimmering plains, hill stations remain among the most curious monuments to the British colonial presence in India. In this engaging and meticulously researched study, Dane Kennedy explores the development and history of the hill stations of the raj. He shows that these cloud-enshrouded havens were sites of both refuge and surveillance for British expatriates: sanctuaries from the harsh climate as well as an alien culture; artificial environments where colonial rulers could nurture, educate, and reproduce themselves; commanding heights from which orders could be issued with an Olympian authority. Kennedy charts the symbolic and sociopolitical functions of the hill stations over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, arguing that these highland communities became much more significant to the British colonial government than mere places for rest and play. Particularly after the revolt of 1857, they became headquarters for colonial political and military authorities. In addition, the hill stations provided employment to countless Indians who worked as porters, merchants, government clerks, domestics, and carpenters. The isolation of British authorities at the hill stations reflected the paradoxical character of the British raj itself, Kennedy argues. While attempting to control its subjects, it remained aloof from Indian society. Ironically, as more Indians were drawn to these mountain areas for work, and later for vacation, the carefully guarded boundaries between the British and their subjects eroded. Kennedy argues that after the turn of the century, the hill stations were increasingly incorporated into the landscape of Indian social and cultural life. Book excerpt: The book past, Present and Future of Kashmir deals in detail with the problem of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Beginning with the political history of the state in ancient times it presents a chronology of Kashmiri rulers - Hindus, Muslims and the British respectively. When India was to become independent it was ruled by a Hindu King who failed in either way to decide the fate of the territory like other princely states of India. As a result of the mini war between India and Pakistan a portion of it was held by the latter and is known as Azad Kashmir. In post-independence phase it continues to be a contentious issue between the two neighbours and caused four devastating wars over it. Pakistan has complaints over its accession to the Union of India because at the time, public at large, were no consulted. The very composition of Pakistani society and political system as well witnessed a sea change towards the direction opposite to India. In recent year the two have realised the futility of third party began to look forward for better bilateral understanding to great rid of this vexed problem.
