Book Synopsis The Collecting of Antiques by : Esther Singleton
Download or read book The Collecting of Antiques written by Esther Singleton and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only articles of aesthetic appeal are considered in this volume, which is addressed to discriminating collectors, who sometimes like to read about what they already know, and to beginner-collectors, who have just started on their quest for artistic treasures. Consequently, this book treats of such types of china, silver, glass, furniture, metal-work, and textiles as belong to the Decorative Arts, while such types as belong to the Industries of a nation are not represented. This will explain the omission of Sandwich Glass and Hooked Rugs, which, although enjoying present popularity with some collectors of Americiana, cannnot possibly be classed with beautiful objects de luxe able to pass all the canons of elegant and fastidious taste.-pg. vii.

Book Synopsis Canadian Symbols of Authority by : Corinna Pike
Download or read book Canadian Symbols of Authority written by Corinna Pike and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2011-06-14 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to examine the various parliamentary maces, rods, badges, and chains of office used throughout Canada, Canadian Symbols of Authority details how these devices are used at every level of government, emphasizing how, like the Crown itself, they embody continuity in an ever-changing world. Symbols of authority are not only emblems of democracy and authority but they are part of the diverse heraldic and artistic heritage of Canada. Despite Canada’s rich symbolic and ceremonial heritage, little has been written about the nations various symbols of authority or the offices that are associated with them. From the Great Maces of the Senate and House of Commons to the Chancellors Chain of the Order of Canada and Baton of the Chief Herald, the development of Canada’s symbols of authority encompasses the past 250 years of Canadian history. Richly illustrated, this book is the most comprehensive study yet undertaken of the origins, history, and development of parliamentary maces.
Book Synopsis The Victorian Novel On File by : Priyanka Anne Jacob
Download or read book The Victorian Novel On File written by Priyanka Anne Jacob and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorian Novel On File argues that the nineteenth-century information explosion shapes the novel form. In a world teeming with data, the novel is a storage medium, cluttered with detail and accumulating more than it can use. The fictional things that have been read as insignificant should be seen instead as vessels of information, embedding the text with potential. This study weaves together a formal account of the novel with media and information studies as well as new materialist approaches to objects. Information took material form in the nineteenth century: in Victorian literature, data can be located in bric-a-brac, folded-up papers, semi-precious stones, and rubbish heaps. Yet this information may never be transmitted as knowledge. Instead, the novel offers indefinite storage, gesturing toward the future while holding action and accountability in abeyance. Fallen by the wayside of plot are documents left on file, containers left unopened, stock left on the shelf, and secrets left untold-enacting, this study argues, the Victorian novel's aesthetics of deferral. In readings of works by Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Wilkie Collins, and Rudyard Kipling, this study illustrates the formal effects of cultural questions about value and meaning, longevity and history, abundance and overwhelm, and keeping and discarding. It closes by showing how these same questions animate the twenty-first century's information culture as well.
