Jonathan Swift’s lost silver mines have been woven into legend and passed from one generation to the next for more than 230 years. Beginning with an introduction by the late Michael Paul Henson, nationally known treasure expert, this comprehensive volume explores the legend of this enigmatic character who mined the mountains of Appalachia from 1761 until 1769. Unable to remove his entire cache of silver when he left the region, Swift hid much of his treasure in the mines. When he returned in the late 1700s to retrieve the secret caches, he was unable to locate them. During this time, copies of a journal kept by Swift (giving directions and clues to the hidden stashes) were sold and/or given away. Steely has collected and compared legends from across the region, found maps and old journals, and compiled all the information in this interesting, organized book for treasure hunters and historians. Drawing upon treasure lore from the Shawnee, Cherokee, Spanish, French, and Melungeons, this work spans Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, and Alabama.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel is a true story! I was a part of it. In 1974 a wealthy industrialist bought the oldest silver mine in the USA. in Lancaster County. The mine had been abandoned for over 100 years when the lower shafts broke into the water table. Once they were drained out super-rich veins of silver were rediscovered. I was the one sent down to see what was there. The discovery was kept a secret, except for the few who knew. The industrialist went on a 14-year quest to uncover the mineral wealth by opening up a quarry. The township refused. They were never told of the silver there. He bided his time and meanwhile opened up a huge campground and vbenue for country-music stars. From 1974 to 1988 every country-music star in the country went there and entertained over 500,000 people. He figured that, in time, new supervisors would come and he would get his way. He never did. He died, unexpectedly, in 1988, taking his high ambition and his secret with him. Except for me! Now I tell you the story, the truth, untold for all this time. The silver mine is a 300-acre park which can be visited by the general public. But there is no one there to tell the storied past. Except me. Read it here first! Then go and see it for yourself! Christopher Haefner is also the author the 2006 thriller, The Cuz.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Cobalt: The Story of Canada's Marvellous Silver Mining Camp Did you ever think that the first you read is the last the author writes? We never know what a book is to be, and cannot know until it is. As Patrick would say - "we never know what we are going to write until we have written it." In May of 1907, Cobalt to me was a name - now it is a reality, and, believe me, "reality" may well be placed in italics. If I am an enthusiast on the subject, it is with reason, and I am honest in saying, that the most glowing accounts of it but feebly convey what Cobalt really is. Even during the months I spent in the camp, prospect after prospect turned to mine, and mine to shipper, passed the Gillies Limit with a "calcite" jest, only to find it a "shipper," after the jest was in printed page. That is the one advantage of a Preface - you can take it back before the book reaches the hands of the critic, and thus discount his sting. Two days ago, Feb. 28th, the most famous mining law suit of the Camp was ended. For years "The Lawson Vein" was in litigation. It passed from court to court (see page 30), through many tedious trials. But this ends it, and I have got to record the ending even if I have to put it in the "Beginning." Tom Crawford lost and John McMartin won. I trust that no one will get the impression that I think all the 949 Coleman claims and the hundreds outside will become mines. That would be impossible, and I would wish one to be misled. I do say that there are many great mines in Cobalt, and many more prospects that must yet, become rich shippers. I have named of each a very, very few. Some of the richest I have but hardly noted in passing - some of their owners being so modest that they wished not to be mentioned. Like the Quakeress, modest and humble - and enormously proud of it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Pierce Dwelly is a proud Eastern Kentucky native and has published this book to focus on hardships, friendships, struggles, and the endurance of the Kentucky way of life. While this story is fictional it draws upon the essence of the true spirit of all Kentuckians from varying walks of life. This story also centers around the natural beauty of the state as well as folklore and traditions. The author has taken great care to craft this tale in a way that showcases the characters' humanity while at the same time circumventing the negative stereotypes that often plague individuals of certain parts of the state. Swift's Silver Mine: Sam's Journey is based on the legend of Jonathan Swift and his alleged travels to the state of Kentucky in the mid 1700's. The legend of Swift's travels spans Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. It is widely believed in these areas that Swift had either discovered silver mines or stashed his plunders in various locations. While there are those who think that Swift's legend is just a fanciful tale, it is the author's belief that the tales are too common and the stories etched into the very fabric of the locations in question do lend some credence to their validity.
