Book excerpt: Recently rediscovered in hidden chambers in the north of France is an incredible secret of the Battle of the Somme and World War I. The signatures and graffiti of French, English and Australian soldiers tell a story of lives long lost but now found. The Silent Soldiers of Naours is the story of how French and Australian researchers rediscovered the incredible stories of what happened to these men. A large group of French archaeologists have been exploring more than 250 World War I sites since 2001. Having been involved in the Lost Diggers of Vignacourt project, an Australian group of researchers became involved with Gilles Prilaux and his team working in a small village near Vignacourt that was once behind the lines during WW1. Beneath a small village named Naours, over 3000 signatures are recorded on the walls of a network of ancient underground caves. Most of the signatures were left by 'Aussie' soldiers while on leave or training for combat in Vignacourt and surrounding areas. Michael and Donna Fiechtner have been involved in the investigation of these signatures and a French archaeological team headed by Gilles Prilaux has been matching the signatures with the names and biographies of past soldiers. After leaving their names etched in history many went off to WWI battlefields, never to return. Here is a military book with a heart ... images of signatures and graffiti (drawings) matched to the names of Australian soldiers with full biographies and accompanying pictures and documentation. It is a unique story that offers something new to readers interested in the history of World War I.

Book excerpt: Winner of the CBCA Crichton Award for New Illustrators in the CBCA Awards, 2015 Honour Book for Picture Books in the CBCA Awards, 2015 In one minute of silence you can imagine sprinting up the beach in Gallipoli in 1915 with the fierce fighting Diggers, but can you imagine standing beside the brave battling Turks as they defended their homeland from the cliffs above... In the silence that follows a war long gone, you can see what the soldiers saw, you can feel what the soldiers felt. And if you try, you might be able to imagine the enemy, and see that he is not so different from you... In One Minute's Silence, you are the story, and the story is yours - to imagine, remember and honour the brothers in arms on both sides of the conflict, heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives. A moving and powerful reflection on the meaning of Remembrance Day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nisei Soldiers Break Their Silence is a compelling story of courage, community, endurance, and reparation. It shares the experiences of Japanese Americans (Nisei) who served in the U.S. Army during World War II, fighting on the front lines in Italy and France, serving as linguists in the South Pacific, and working as cooks and medics. The soldiers were from Hood River, Oregon, where their families were landowners and fruit growers. Town leaders, including veterans' groups, attempted to prevent their return after the war and stripped their names from the local war memorial. All of the soldiers were American citizens, but their parents were Japanese immigrants and had been imprisoned in camps as a consequence of Executive Order 9066. The racist homecoming that the Hood River Japanese American soldiers received was decried across the nation. Linda Tamura, who grew up in Hood River and whose father was a veteran of the war, conducted extensive oral histories with the veterans, their families, and members of the community. She had access to hundreds of recently uncovered letters and documents from private files of a local veterans' group that led the campaign against the Japanese American soldiers. This book also includes the little known story of local Nisei veterans who spent 40 years appealing their convictions for insubordination. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the soldiers left behind, the war never ended. In the shattered remnants of a world still haunted by the scars of war, Pollux stands as a living relic. Born from the fiery crucible of conflict, he was designed to be a weapon, an ultimate defender against the alien menace known as the Hyperion. But against all odds, he survived. Now, years after the dust settled and the echoes of battle faded, Pollux finds himself adrift in a world that no longer has a place for him. With darkened skies casting a perpetual shadow and toxic air choking the streets, the remnants of the war persist as a constant reminder of past horrors. Yet, in the depths of this broken existence, Pollux clings to the hope of forging a life of his own. But when a sinister conspiracy threatens to unravel the fragile peace he has managed to build, Pollux's battle-hardened instincts surge to life once more. The same survival instincts that carried him through the invasion of an alien armada now guide him as he seeks the truth. And those who underestimated this old soldier, those who thought they could erase him from the page of history, will soon discover the depths of their mistake. In this blend of military sci-fi and noir, Pollux becomes a reluctant hero, navigating the treacherous labyrinth of secrets and lies that entangle his world. As he unearths the dark underbelly of a society desperately trying to heal, he finds himself at odds with powerful forces determined to keep their sins hidden. With danger lurking around every corner, Pollux embarks on a relentless pursuit of justice, using the skills honed on the front lines of war to confront his adversaries. The fate of a fragile world rests in the hands of a soldier who refuses to be silenced, a survivor who refuses to let the shadows consume him. In a gripping tale of redemption, betrayal, and resilience, the boundaries between humanity and machine blur, and the price of salvation may prove higher than anyone could have imagined. For this old soldier, the battle is far from over.

Book excerpt: An Anthology of Modern War Poetry and Prose written by contributors (veterans, veterans families, and supporters) to the International War Veterans Poetry Archives (IWVPA). This book is dedicated to the Men and Women of the Armed Forces of the Free World who have been, are now, and will be placed in harm's way. For many of those who find it difficult to come to terms with personal war experiences, whether it is first hand or as a loved one or friend, writing is almost like a magical pill. Within the structured framework of the written word, emotions can be haltered and led to a point where the writer is enabled to manifest and relate to the gamut of emotions engendered by the experiences and consequences of war.
