Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consumptive forms of wildlife tourism (hunting, shooting and fishing) have become a topic of interest – both to the tourism industry, in terms of destinations seeking to establish or grow this sector, and to other stakeholders such as environmental organisations, animal-rights groups, and the general public. Hunting tourism, in particular, has come under fire with accusations that it is contributing to the demise of some species. Practices such as "canned hunting" (within fenced safari parks) or the use of hounds are described as unethical, and fishing tourism too has attracted recent negative publicity as it is said to be cruel. At the same time, however, many peripheral and indigenous communities around the world are strategising how to capitalise on consumptive forms of wildlife tourism. This book addresses a range of contentious issues facing the consumptive wildlife tourism sector across a number of destinations in Europe, North America, Africa, India, Arabia and Oceania. Practices such as baited bear hunting, trophy hunting of threatened species, and hunting for conservation are debated, along with the impact of this type of tourism on indigenous communities and on wider societies. Research on all aspects of "consumptive wildlife tourism" is included, which for the purposes of the book is defined to include all tourism that involves the intended killing of wildlife for sport purposes, and may include the harvest of wildlife products. This includes, among others, recreational hunting, big-game hunting and safari operations, traditional/indigenous hunting, game-bird shooting, hunting with hounds, freshwater angling and saltwater game fishing etc. This is the first book to specifically address tourist aspects of consumption of wildlife. It will appeal to tourism and recreation academics and students, tourism industry operators, community tourism planners and wildlife managers.

Book excerpt: Generous-hearted and wickedly insightful, The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing is the New York Times bestselling novel by Melissa Bank The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing maps the progress of Jane Rosenal as she sets out on a personal and spirited expedition through the perilous terrain of sex, love, relationships, and the treacherous waters of the workplace. Soon Jane is swept off her feet by an older man and into a Fitzgeraldesque whirl of cocktail parties, country houses, and rules that were made to be broken, but comes to realise that it's a world where the stakes are much too high for comfort. With an unforgettable comic touch, Bank skilfully teases out universal issues, puts a clever new spin on the mating dance, and captures in perfect pitch what it's like to come of age as a young woman. 'This chronicle of a New Yorker's relationships has a wit and perceptiveness that singles it out from the crowd' Guardian 'As hilarious as Girls' Guide is, there's a wise, serious core here' Wall Street Journal 'A sexy, pour-your-heart-out, champagne tingle of a read-thoughtful, wise, and tell-all honest. Bank's is a voice that you'll remember' Cosmopolitan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there has been increasing interest in recent years in the welfare of farm animals, fish are frequently thought to be different. In many people's perception, fish, with their lack of facial expressions or recognisable communication, are not seen to count when it comes to welfare. Angling is a major sport, and fishing a big industry. Millions of fish are caught on barbed hooks, or left to die by suffocation on the decks of fishing boats. Here, biologist Victoria Braithwaite explores the question of fish pain and fish suffering, explaining what we now understand about fish behaviour, and examining the related ethical questions about how we should treat these animals. She asks why the question of pain in fish has not been raised earlier, indicating our prejudices and assumptions; and argues that the latest and growing scientific evidence would suggest that we should widen to fish the protection currently given to birds and mammals.

FOREWORD: FOR a period so protracted as to visibly shrink ones life expectancy, Nash Buckingham has been promising to take me hunting and or fishing to some of those fabulous old gunning and angling paradises about which he writes. Nash made the initial proposal soon after I had first read De Shootinest Genfman. For die benefit of those coming in late, this establishes the period as approximately the Glacial Age. During intervening eons, Nash has reaffirmed that solemn pledge. While partaking of Mingos hot-cat-an-taters at Doug Stampers Mermaid Tavern, for instance, he has lured on my panting novices hopes with oral paintings of waterfowling as practiced of yore at Beaver Dam, or, in more modern vein, at Section 16 along Bayou Lagrues pin oaks and ricelands. He has led me up into the high hills and shown me the Seven Temptations of quailing at the Ames plantation, Hugh Bucking hams farm, or in Bob Carriers plush coverts. Listening rapdy, Fve found myself actually changing into shooting togs at table, while Mingos shrimp gumbo, meandering its spoons rim, registered chameleon-like deposits along my necktie or in the upper-tier creases of my waistcoat. Manys the day, a much younger Paul basking in the sunshine of a benign and understanding Gamaliels smile, I have in minds eye centered a high-flying brace of greenheads, scored repeated rights and lefts on bobwhites zooming beyond Ethel and Edgar ...

But at least I can say that this volume makes no pretence to compete, either in description or instruction, with other well-known works. It is an attempt merely to give in a light, and I hope readable way, the thoughts, experiences, and suggestions of one who, by this time, has had a fair opportunity of taking mental notes. If I may in this connection quote Walton - a long way after - it would be to say that, in regard to this book, "I wish the reader to take notice, that in writing it I have made myself a recreation of a recreation; and that it might prove so to him, and not read dull and tediously, I have in several places mix't (not any scurrility, but) some innocent, harmless mirth, of which, if thou be severe, sowre-complexioned man, then I here disallow thee to be a competent judge." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Laurence Catlow, a classics master at a Cumbrian boarding school, sees a beautiful pheasant in flight, he wants to reach for his gun. In this diary of his sporting year, he asks himself, between days on the local rivers and shoots, why this is so. His answers are surprising, controversial and convincing. They provide an articulate response to the anti-fieldsports arguments, and he presents them in an entertaining, frank and amusing manner. Throughout 1995, Laurence's diary records his hopes of buying some precipitous shooting ground in the Pennines, his fishing days on the Eden, Wharfe and other rivers, the arrival of a second gundog and days spent together on shoots. All this activity is interspersed with Laurence's quest for his true motives in killing what he most loves. He looks at foxhunting, vegetarianism, man as a hunter, man as created in God's image and man as a creature doomed, himself, to die. Nearly 25 years later, this diary remains highly topical, thought-provoking and original. yet its tone is also very human and it comes from the pen of a true nature-lover.

Book excerpt: Peter Hathaway Capstick first earned a name as an outdoor writer in the pages of such magazines as Guns & Ammo, Petersen's Hunting, The American Hunter, and Outdoor Life. In this, the first of a two-volume collection of his hunting, fishing, and shooting tales, you'll find twenty-four examples of his keen eye and steady hand with rifle, shotgun, bow, and typewriter. The critically acclaimed successor to Hemingway and Robert Ruark repeatedly put himself in harm's way and writes about close scrapes with his trademark wit and dash. He tells what it's like to be in the path of an express train with Horns--the Cape buffalo; describes the heart-stopping sensation of sharing the immediate bush with several sickle-clawed lions that most certainly were prone to argue; and recounts his adventures bow-fishing for exotic species in the piranha-filled rivers of Brazil. Capstick's experiences, painfully gained (and almost lost) with the most dangerous of game, are the yardsticks against which most modern exotic and hunting adventures are gauged. The finely rendered drawings by Dino Paravano do justice to the text.
