Book excerpt: In Oe's masterpiece of the human condition and family psychology, estranged brothers Mitsusaburo and Takashi have long since left their family home in a remote forested valley on Shikoku, in the south of Japan: Mitsusaburo for work in Tokyo; his younger brother Takashi for the United States, to atone for his part in anti-American student protests. Takashi's return to Japan coincides with a local Korean supermarket magnate's offer to buy the brothers' ancestral storehouse, pitting the brothers against one another and dredging up family histories best forgotten. The Silent Cry is the most important Japanese novel of the post-war period and a strange, unsettling tale of how the call of blood and history echoes down the generations.

For years, like many others, I accepted things that no woman should have. I allowed the one person who was supposed to give me love and respect treat me like I was less than nothing. I thought by accepting the treatment, at some point, he would see that what he was doing was hurting me and it would force him to change, but sadly, that never happened. I watched myself change as a woman, mother, daughter, and friend into a person I didn’t even recognize. I asked the military and those around me for help, but my cries repeatedly went unnoticed. When I finally received help, I was ostracized by those whom I called friends because of my decision to stay. Now I want to share my story with all of you and all those women who are silenced.

From the Belt and Road initiative to its involvement in Great Power struggles with the West, China is facing the world once more in the hope of reclaiming a lost Chinese greatness. But is "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics" just neoliberal capitalism under another name? And, if so, how can China reclaim the heritage of the Revolution in this its 70th anniversary? In this panoramic study of Chinese history in the twentieth century, Lin Chun argues that the paradoxes of contemporary Chinese society do not merely echo the tensions of modernity or capitalist development. Instead, they are a product of both the contradictions rooted in its revolutionary history, and the social and political consequences of its post-socialist transition. Revolution and Counterrevolution in China charts China's epic revolutionary trajectory in search of a socialist alternative to the global system, and asks whether market reform must repudiate and overturn the revolution and its legacy.

Book excerpt: This is a true story about the abuse, neglect, and the survival of five small children, what they had to endure and cope with throughout the years when they should have been loved, but were not. I am taking the time to write this book, for all the children that weren't and may not be as fortunate as we were. Therefore, I dedicate this book to them and to my brothers and sister who have since passed away.I hope this book will help others understand what happens to the less fortunate children in our society, even though as you read my book, you may find yourself sad and in awe.All too often children are not as fortunate as we are and will not live through the horrors and the trails life will set before them, leaving their stories never to be heard. Therefore, I write my story in their honor. Many times in our young lives, the hard times seemed to be insurmountable. Nevertheless, with the help of good friends and family, along with good old-fashion hard work and a little imagination, along with ingenuity, often things that may have been impossible, are now possible. This is why I tell people "never say never," because the impossible is only an idea that has yet to be done.I have always felt that to try and fail is not the mark of a failure, but to see something as being impossible before you have ever tried, is truly marking yourself to be a failure. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is having the strength to do what is necessary for spite of fear.

Book excerpt: Margaret gives searing and compelling insights into the isolated world of one deaf child who grew up in an era uneducated about deafness. The results were the very tragic consequences that shaped her life. The Silent Cry is a shocking story of molestation and abandonment, neglect and a multitude of falsely diagnosed mental illnesses. As a child, Margaret could not hear and her speech was unintelligible. These problems made it impossible for her to communicate with those around her. She then attended a school for the deaf and learned her primary language-American Sign Language, thus enabling her to communicate with peers and teachers. Her family was not willing to learn American Sign Language and this further compounded her awareness of isolation in a hearing world. She much later learned English, however, it is not her primary language as many like to believe. Because of her Deaf boyfriend?s suicide attempt, she was suddenly compelled to leave Delavan, Wisconsin School for the Deaf. The school has served deaf and hard of hearing students in the state of Wisconsin since 1852. WSD has an average annual enrollment of 180 students in grades pre-K through 12th. WSD stresses quality of service to students and parents. We focus on meeting the needs of students with disabilities in the areas of academic, adaptive education, vocational and social skills development. When she was pushed into a hearing world without verbal or writing communication skills at the age of eighteen, she was not able to blend in. Finally, she determined that she was abandoned on the streets where she was preyed upon by pimps who force her into prostitution. This is a chilling account of the exploitation of a person with a disability, but it is also a story of remarkable courage and triumph of the human spirit. A Truly amazing transformation! The work ends with the author's nervous and joyful reunion with self-awareness and self-confidence. It is also a beautiful love story involving many cultures. The main cultures consist of two different languages, two difference races, and the bridges built between them making this story unique.

Book excerpt: As one of the most significant figures in the history of Western civilization, the apostle Paul has influenced and inspired countless individuals and institutions. But for some, he holds a controversial place in Christianity. This engaging book explores why many people have been wary of Paul and what their criticisms reveal about the church and the broader culture. Patrick Gray brings intellectual and cultural history into conversation with study of the New Testament, providing a balanced account and assessment of widespread antipathy to Paul and exploring what the controversy tells us about ourselves.

Book excerpt: Matthew Young is a new beat poet, and also a Doors fan, the second name Young --- in this case is correct --- because both the poetry and the poet are! I especially dug: 'Brendan Behans' Glass', 'Diet Christ', 'Dreaming Like A Symphony' and 'Dublin Ramblings'; amongst the 247 pages of Matthew's first poetry works in his new book: BEATING THE LILIES. Meeting Matt a couple of years ago on a poetry reading trip with other Doors fans in that low-lit Rue de la Roquette passage, near my fave Parisian hotel the Royal Bastille --- we hung like Beats and talked poetry and Doors stuff; and hung with a chick called Kat who was into Hemingway: all outside in the cool breeze of a July night. This cat is a traveller and a seeker, and what comes through on these works of his, is a man in touch with the true spirit of Beat! ... like all good poetry you'll have to read some of these a few times over --- to lean on all the angles...
