Book Synopsis Faulknerista by : Catherine G. Kodat
Download or read book Faulknerista written by Catherine G. Kodat and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2022-11-16 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faulknerista collects more than twenty years of critically influential scholarship by Catherine Gunther Kodat on the writings of one of the most important American authors of the twentieth century, William Faulkner. Initially composed as freestanding essays and now updated and revised, the book’s nine chapters place Faulkner’s work in the context of current debates concerning the politics of white authors who write about race, queer sexualities, and the use of the N-word in literature and popular culture. The Faulknerista of the title is a critic who tackles these debates without fear or favor, balancing admiration with skepticism in a manner that establishes a new model for single-author scholarship that is both historically grounded (for women have been writing about Faulkner, and talking back to him, since the beginning of his career) and urgently contemporary. Beginning with an introduction that argues for the critical importance of women’s engagement with Faulkner’s fiction, through comparative discussions pairing it with works by Toni Morrison, Jean-Luc Godard, Quentin Tarantino, and David Simon, Faulknerista offers a valuable resource for students, scholars, and general readers, written in an accessible style and aimed at stimulating discussions of Faulkner’s work and the rich interpretive challenges it continues to present.

Download or read book Writing Occupation written by Julia Elsky and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the Jewish writers who emigrated from Eastern Europe to France in the 1910s and 1920s, a number chose to switch from writing in their languages of origin to writing primarily in French, a language that represented both a literary center and the promises of French universalism. But under the Nazi occupation of France from 1940 to 1944, these Jewish émigré writers—among them Irène Némirovsky, Benjamin Fondane, Romain Gary, Jean Malaquais, and Elsa Triolet—continued to write in their adopted language, even as the Vichy regime and Nazi occupiers denied their French identity through xenophobic and antisemitic laws. In this book, Julia Elsky argues that these writers reexamined both their Jewishness and their place as authors in France through the language in which they wrote. The group of authors Elsky considers depicted key moments in the war from their perspective as Jewish émigrés, including the June 1940 civilian flight from Paris, life in the occupied and southern zones, the roundups and internment camps, and the Resistance in France and in London. Writing in French, they expressed multiple cultural, religious, and linguistic identities, challenging the boundaries between center and periphery, between French and foreign, even when their sense of belonging was being violently denied.

Book Synopsis The Autobiography Effect by : Dennis Schep
Download or read book The Autobiography Effect written by Dennis Schep and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the advent of post-structuralism, various authors have problematized the modern conception of autobiography by questioning the status of authorship and interrogating the relation between language and reality. Yet even after making autobiography into a theoretical problem, many of these authors ended up writing about themselves. This paradox stands at the center of this wide-ranging study of the form and function of autobiography in the work of authors who have distanced themselves from its modern instantiation. Discussing Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Hélène Cixous and others, this book grapples with the question of what it means to write the self when the self is understood as an effect of writing. Combining close reading, intellectual history and literary theory, The Autobiography Effect traces how precisely its theoretically problematic nature made autobiography into a central scene for the negotiation of philosophical positions and anxieties after structuralism.

This book was released on 2020-09-30T10:49:00+02:00 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with a topic at central to the Italian historiographical debate, namely the Italian authorities’ attitude in the occupied territories during the Second World War and, in particular, towards the local Jewish communities. Through a reconstruction that is the result of authors with different sensitivities and historiographic approaches, the contradictory nature of the application of anti-Jewish legislation by Italian authorities emerges; an application that went from protection to more or less rigid internment up to handing them over to German authorities. A historiographically innovative book, therefore, that aims to shed light on one of the most dramatic events of the Second World War: the persecution of the Jewish population.
