Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies in Literature That these brief chapters may prove helpful to readers of books who desire to become students of literature, is the hope which the writer ventures to cherish in the face of defects more obvious to him than to the most unsympathetic critic. These Studies are not critical but interpretative they are neither exhaustive nor inclusive; they are mainly hints and suggestions. Each chapter might be elaborated into a volume. If they serve to indi cate the leading lines of literary development, the fundamental divisions and distinctions, the deep and vital tendencies, they will accomplish the end for which they were written. That they represent deep convictions concerning the significance of literature rather than a purely critical attitude, will be apparent to the most indifferent reader. The writer is glad of an Opportunity of putting forth what he trusts may be, to some readers at least, a book of insight, rather than a contribution to the. I may therefore best introduce this small volume by saying that the short essays contained in it have already had a successful career before reaching their present and perhaps, as some may think, unmerited dignity of book publication. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Short Story Nevertheless, although I have taken advantage of the information accessible in The Short Story in English to free the following pages from hindering bibliography and frequent reference to minor literature, I have done all possible to make this new history of the short story more discriminating, more just, and more true. The historical periods and the course of development laid down before have been verified by later study, but I have felt as free to modify the critical conclusions of my earlier work as to borrow from them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies of American Authors Vivid as this impression is, I yet saw him but twice, and never spoke to him. I first met him on a summer morning, in Concord, as he was walking along the road near the Old Manse, with his wife by his side, and a noble-looking baby-boy in a little wagon which the father was pushing. I re member him as tall, firm, and strong in bearing; his wife looked pensive and dreamy, as she indeed was, then and always; the child was julian, then known among the neighbors as the Prince. When I passed, Hawthorne lifted upon me his great gray eyes, with a look too keen to seem ih different, too shy to be sympathetic - and that was all. But it comes back to memory like that one glimpse of Shelley which Browning describes, and which he Olikens to the day when he found an eagle's feather. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types of the Short Story: Selected Stories With Reading Lists The prominence of the short story as a literary form has led to the preparation of several textbooks on the subject. Some of these are treatises on the technique of the short story, others give specimens selected to show the historical development of the type. But a course in the writing of short stories belongs in college work, and the study of the evolution of literary forms has its proper place in the university. The present volume is prepared for the high school student. It does not aim to trace 'the develop ment of the short story, but accepting it as a literary type, considers the chief forms in which it is found today. To this end thirteen stories, each illustrating a well-defined type, are presented. Each selection is followed by brief comment and a list of other stories of the same type, the purpose being to lead the student to a wider and more intelligent reading in this enjoyable field of literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Lincoln to Cleveland: And Other Short Studies in History and General Literature Most readers wisely skip the Preface as at best a piece of conventional surplusage. This volume, as may be seen at a glance, is fragmentary - partly from choice and yet more from necessity. Chronic invalidism of ten years' continuance is not favorable to exhaustive discussions, nor are such discussions in much favor in the present age. This, however, is not said apologetically, for after all the book must stand or fall on its intrinsic merits - would it were worthier We beg leave to express our regret that some slight errors, typographical and otherwise, were seen too late for correction in the present edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies of Shakespeare's Plots The following studies of Shakespeare were originally delivered as popular lectures before a mixed audience. Their design is to be suggestive rather than exhaustive, and to call attention to a method of teaching Shake speare somewhat different from that which is now employed in colleges and schools. That method, which treats the plays of Shakespeare more as convenient collections of hard words and unusual idioms than as masterpieces of literature, seems to me to be in many respects extremely unsatisfactory. It is repellent rather than attractive to the student, and it teaches him from the very outset to pursue his studies by a wrong road. Under its in uence, the play as a whole tends to be neglected, words are exalted to the exclusion of thoughts, and study is far too much on the lines adopted by the young lady who is said to have fastened down the text with a piece of elastic in order that it might not interfere with her learning the notes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of American Literature Throughout the book the literature has been pre sented in its relation to general conditions in America and to the literatures of England and the Continent of Europe, for only so can it be completely understood and its full significance perceived 3 but the personality of the authors and the intrinsic qualities of their work have, it is hoped, received due attention. The division into periods is not meant to be insisted upon too strongly. But some dividing lines must be run for convenience and clearness in treating of so wide and diversified a field, and those adopted are perhaps liable to fewer objections than any others. They have, however, been transgressed freely where it was necessary to do so in order to avoid splitting the discussion of an author's work. In the case of writers with whom the reader is probably not familiar and never need be, the method is chie y descriptive 3 elsewhere the book is intended to be merely a guide in reading and studying the literature itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to construct a nuanced narrative or complex character in the constrained form of the short story has sometimes been seen as the ultimate test of an author's creativity. Yet during the time when the short story was at its most popular - the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - even the greatest writers followed strict generic conventions that were far from subtle. This expanded and updated translation of Florence Goyet's influential La Nouvelle, 1870-1925: Description d'un genre à son apogée (Paris, 1993) is the only study to focus exclusively on this classic period across different continents. Ranging through French, English, Italian, Russian and Japanese writing - particularly the stories of Guy de Maupassant, Henry James, Giovanni Verga, Anton Chekhov and Akutagawa Ry?nosuke - Goyet shows that these authors were able to create brilliant and successful short stories using the very simple 'tools of brevity' of that period. In this challenging and far-reaching study, Goyet looks at classic short stories in the context in which they were read at the time: cheap newspapers and higher-end periodicals. She demonstrates that, despite the apparent intention of these stories to question bourgeois ideals, they mostly affirmed the prejudices of their readers. In doing so, her book forces us to re-think our preconceptions about this 'forgotten' genre.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Short Stories: A Book for High Schools For many years high school teachers have wished for books of short stories edited for high school use. They have known that most novels, however interesting, are too long to hold attention, and that too few novels can be read to give proper appreciation of form in narration. The essay, as seen in The Sir Roger de Coverley Papers, and in Irving's Sketch Book, has been a poor substitute for the short story. High school students have longed for action, for quickness, for life, for climax, for something new and modern. Instead, they have had hundreds of pages, long expositions, descriptions, leisurely treatment, and material drawn from the past. They have read such material because they must, and have turned, for relief, to short stories in the cheaper magazines. The short story is to-day our most common literary product. It is read by everyone. Not every boy or girl will read novels after leaving school, but every boy or girl is certain to read short stories. It is important in the high school to guide taste and appreciation in short story reading, so that the reading of days when school life is over will be healthful and upbuilding. This important duty has been recognized in all the most recent suggestions for high school reading. The short story is just beginning to take its important place in the high school course. To make use of a book of short stories in high school work is to fall in line with the most modern developments in the teaching of literature in the high school.
