Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents The Gig by Cody Weinmann The book, The Gig is a story of American horror and tragedy that involves the downfall of a once-successful musician who had travelled the world, one coffee shop, one bar, one stage at a time. Under the recession, he fell out of work. He began searching coffee shops, just begging different shop owners for work. He was never seen without his sax in hand, but after the thirtieth no from the 30th club or coffee house, he is sitting having coffee when he falls to the floor in a massive, convulsing seizure. In another pose, 24 hours after this attempt on his life, the devil threatens the musician's life with another seizure and then a car wreck. In a saving grab, the musician is taken to heaven where he's listed as one of God's musical heroes. You can call it a horror cum spiritual story where fate and faith are tested multiple times. This story really brings to light just how difficult it is to live in this dangerous world and to survive where money is an ever-tightening resource. It also shows how the lack of money contributes to the downfall of other attributes to a person, including the individual's health and mental capacity. This book puts a new spin on horror and spirituality as a mix to remember. Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

When Riley Jensen hears that Len Wilkins, a family friend who also employs her father as a farm hand, has been found dead with his eyes burned out of his head, her latent but innate heroism emerges. When news of several deaths of the same nature as that of Len Wilkins’ travels throughout Silverton, Riley becomes gripped with concern and fear for her grandfather Murray, who is a stubborn, leather-tough old man living alone in the countryside, miles outside of Silverton. After Riley’s parents have rushed to the hospital in a neighboring town because her mother Cece is in labor, Riley tries to reach Murray to convince him to come into town and stay until the mysterious deaths are solved, but Murray can’t be reached. Only 15 and with no driver’s license, Riley takes her dad’s Harley out to Murray’s house to check on him. She arrives to find him under assault by a gray alien with a blinding laser focused directly into his eyes. With ninja-like deft, Riley hops upon a mare, and uses the horse’s hooves to destroy the alien mechanism—and the alien. With Murray safe, the pair drive back to Silverton just in time for Riley to get the news that she has a new baby brother, Arden. When she goes to see the baby the next day, she is sure he possesses otherworldly intelligence and is convinced that Arden is a star child, come to brighten the Jensen family’s world. Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents One Shot Romance by Cody Weinmann Dean Petro has gotten out of a long, hard break with his long-time band, The Golden Kings. After trying to come to terms with a new record deal, he literally runs into his future girlfriend and muse as she leaves a restaurant near the Hollywood Bowl. The Golden Kings, a group of musicians thought to be the greatest since Coldplay, has a distinct reputation for practically disowning their bass player on stage. Dean, following Tony's short bass tenure for the group, has gotten tired of being taken advantage of. After almost going crazy over his decision and literally falling over his new love, he tells new producer Mr. Wisely that he will stop his contract with the old group and form a duo with his girlfriend Destiny and share a life of romance and music together. Destiny responds by giving Dean hugs and kisses and a great breakfast to get his day off to a great start. He then accepts Mr. Wisely's contract as the songs for his long-awaited first album flow through him non-stop. His efforts, combined with that of his larger-than-life, angel-singing girlfriend, make the first real love dialogue music album since John and Yoko's Double Fantasy release. Now in her early 20's Lucy knew better than to concentrate on her academics alone. She did every menial job she could lay her hands upon so as to support herself and (hopefully) relieve the burden on her mother...she did this despite the fact that her mum was against her being a student-worker. The problem, however, was not her mum, rather, the jobs were taking much of her time and weren't bringing much to the table, so she switched from job to job. She was glad when her friend, Julia, introduced her to freelancing on Upwork. Julia helped got her account approved and taught her how to send winning proposals. It wasn't long before Lucy started landing jobs, but if only she knew the fate that awaited her. She gets hooked up again with a client for whom she previously wrote a romance novel. Apparently, the client wanted her to help turn the novel into a movie, which was good news because it meant more money and popularity. But unfortunately, the client wasn't whom she thought he was. He had ulterior motives, the job was only a lure. It wasn't long before Lucy discovered she had fallen into the hands of an organized network of human traffickers. About the Writer Isaiah is an undergraduate student at the University of Jos. His passion for reading and writing novels was something he had since childhood. This passion for writing found an outlet when, in 2015, he discovered an online community for writers and readers. It wasn't long before he began writing and posting stories on that website, and since then, he has had his short stories published on several online forums. At first, writing was just a hobby, but in 2018, he decided to take it a little deeper and build a writing career. He is currently a freelancer on Upwork and an aspiring blogger. Book excerpt: “An engaging, humorous, revealing, and refreshingly human look at the bizarre, life-threatening, and delightfully humdrum exploits of everyone from sports heroes to sex workers.” -- Douglas Rushkoff, author of Coercion, Ecstasy Club, and Media Virus This wide-ranging survey of the American economy at the turn of the millennium is stunning, surprising, and always entertaining. It gives us an unflinching view of the fabric of this country from the point of view of the people who keep it all moving. The more than 120 roughly textured monologues that make up Gig beautifully capture the voices of our fast-paced and diverse economy. The selections demonstrate how much our world has changed--and stayed the same--in the three decades prior to the turn of the millennium. If you think things have speeded up, become more complicated and more technological, you're right. But people's attitudes about their jobs, their hopes and goals and disappointments, endure. Gig's soul isn't sociological--it's emotional. The wholehearted diligence that people bring to their work is deeply, inexplicably moving. People speak in these pages of the constant and complex stresses nearly all of them confront on the job, but, nearly universally, they throw themselves without reservation into coping with them. Instead of resisting work, we seem to adapt to it. Some of us love our jobs, some of us don't, but almost all of us are not quite sure what we would do without one. With all the hallmarks of another classic on this subject, Gig is a fabulous read, filled with indelible voices from coast to coast. After hearing them, you'll never again feel quite the same about how we work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents Passing Eternity by Jane Beckman The reenactment of the iconic battle of the American Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg, is in its second day, and the paramedics at Aid Station Three have seen their share of cuts and scrapes and heat exhaustion, as oppressive heat and thunderstorms plague the re-created battle scenarios. Fortunately, the more serious injuries have been taken directly from the field to the hospital by emergency medical personnel. The aid station is more like a social club where the paramedics and victims of minor injuries can chat about their favorite topic: the American Civil War. All that is about to change. With twenty minutes until the start of the next battle scenario, Eric, the senior EMT, sends the minor injury cases on their way, readying the tent for any injuries that might happen during the battle. Only Joe, a heat exhaustion case, plus two fellow EMTs are left in the aid station. His fellow medic, Monica, who became a paramedic because of a fascination with medicine that started with her great-great grandmother’s tales of nursing at a field hospital at Gettysburg, starts to share insights on what it was like at the real Battle of Gettysburg. Suddenly, a cannon shot booms, followed by more in quick succession, followed by thunder. Has the battle started early? Strangely, it sounds more like the sounds of battle are coming from the actual site of the Battle of Gettysburg. Then an injured Yankee with a serious leg injury appears in the doorway of the medical tent. He starts to talk to their heat-exhaustion victim, and seems to be very good at his period impression, far too good. They start to treat the man, only to be interrupted by two Yankees bringing a new victim into their aid station, a man with an actual gunshot wound to the chest! Instantly, our paramedics are plunged into a very real life-and-death situation, as they struggle to save the man’s life. And as the sounds of battle rage outside their tent, they try to summon help, only to find their two-way radio has gone dead. Is their patient a tragic accident, a ghost, a traveler in time---or something else? Will their patient live or die? Who are these other men, who have also appeared from the fog of battle? What’s really going on, and is there a reason why they suddenly seem to be in the midst of the real Battle of Gettysburg? Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has never been a band like Pearl Jam. The Seattle quintet has recorded eleven studio albums; sold some 85 million records; played over a thousand shows, in fifty countries; and had five different albums reach number one. But Pearl Jam's story is about much more than music. Through resilience, integrity, and sheer force of will, they transcended several eras, and shaped the way a whole generation thought about art, entertainment, and commerce. Not for You: Pearl Jam and the Present Tense is the first full-length biography of America's preeminent band, from Ten to Gigaton. A study of their role in history – from Operation Desert Storm to the Dixie Chicks; "Jeremy" to Columbine; Kurt Cobain to Chris Cornell; Ticketmaster to Trump – Not for You explores the band's origins and evolution over thirty years of American culture. It starts with their founding, and the eruption of grunge, in 1991; continues through their golden age (Vs., Vitalogy, No Code, and Yield); their middle period (Binaural, Riot Act); and the more divisive recent catalog. Along the way, it considers the band's activism, idealism, and impact, from “W.M.A.” to the Battle of Seattle and Body of War. More than the first critical study, Not for You is a tribute to a famously obsessive fan base, in the spirit of Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch. It's an old-fashioned – if, at times, ambivalent – appreciation; a reflection on pleasure, fandom, and guilt; and an essay on the nature of adolescence, nostalgia, and adulthood. Partly social history, partly autobiography, and entirely outspoken, discursive, and droll, Not for You is the first full-length treatment of Pearl Jam's odyssey and importance in the culture, from the '90s to the present.

If our culture can produce a writer this wonderful, there must be something beautiful about us yet.” — George Saunders Instead of forcing her characters’ stories into neat, arbitrary, preordained shapes, [Eisenberg] allows them to grow organically into oddly shaped, asymmetrical narratives—narratives that possess all the surprising twists and dismaying turns of real life.” — New York Times “Deborah Eisenberg, one of America’s finest writers, offers new ways of seeing and feeling, as if something were being perfected at the core.” — San Francisco Chronicle “Reading [Eisenberg] makes you wish, as you study the family in front of you in the grocery line, that you could see their thoughts rendered as one of Eisenberg’s stunning inner monologues.” — Los Angeles Times “...[S]uperlative and entertaining...Eisenberg is funny, grim, biting, and wise, but always with a light touch and always in the service of worlds that extend far beyond the page. A virtuoso at rendering the flickering gestures by which people simultaneously hide and reveal themselves, Eisenberg is an undisputed master of the short story.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review) “[Eisenberg] is always worth the wait...so instantly absorbing that it feels like an abduction...This book offers no palliatives to its characters or to its readers — no plan of action. But it is a compass.” — The New York Times “Eisenberg is a gorgeous writer...I thank my stars that there’s a writer in the increasingly imperiled world as smart and funny and blazingly moral and devastatingly sidelong as she is.” — New York Times Book Review “Every character is memorable, every situation seizes our attention, and not a single word is out of place...It’s my fervent hope...that someday we’ll have the opportunity to look back on the many more stories that Deborah Eisenberg has yet to write.” — Financial Times

Book excerpt: Keith Morris is a true punk icon. No one else embodies the sound of Southern Californian hardcore the way he does. With his waist-length dreadlocks and snarling vocals, Morris is known the world over for his take-no-prisoners approach on the stage and his integrity off of it. Over the course of his forty-year career with Black Flag, the Circle Jerks, and OFF!, he's battled diabetes, drug and alcohol addiction, and the record industry . . . and he's still going strong. My Damage is more than a book about the highs and lows of a punk rock legend. It's a story from the perspective of someone who has shared the stage with just about every major figure in the music industry and has appeared in cult films like The Decline of Western Civilization and Repo Man. A true Hollywood tale from an L.A. native, My Damage reveals the story of Morris's streets, his scene, and his music-as only he can tell it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ONE OF TIME'S 10 BEST FICTION BOOKS OF 2020. Longlisted for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize. Named a Best Book of 2020 by NPR, Bustle, Good Housekeeping, the New York Public Library, Library Journal, Lit Hub, Electric Literature, and Tor.com "As enchanting as fairy tales, as mysterious as dreams, these exquisitely composed fictions are as urgent and original as any being written today.” —Sigrid Nunez, author of The Friend, winner of the 2018 National Book Award for Fiction An urgent and unsettling collection of women on the verge from Laura van den Berg, author of The Third Hotel I Hold a Wolf by the Ears, Laura van den Berg’s first story collection since her prizewinning book The Isle of Youth, draws readers into a world of wholly original, sideways ghost stories that linger in the mouth and the mind. Both timeless and urgent, these eleven stories confront misogyny, violence, and the impossible economics of America with van den Berg’s trademark spiky humor and surreal eye. Moving from the peculiarities of Florida to liminal spaces of travel in Mexico City, Sicily, and Iceland, I Hold a Wolf by the Ears is uncannily attuned to our current moment, and to the fears we reveal to no one but ourselves. In “Lizards,” a man mutes his wife’s anxieties by giving her a LaCroix-like seltzer laced with sedatives. In the title story, a woman poses as her more successful sister during a botched Italian holiday, a choice that brings about strange and destructive consequences, while in “Karolina,” a woman discovers her prickly ex-sister-in-law in the aftermath of an earthquake and is forced to face the truth about her violent brother. I Hold a Wolf by the Ears presents a collection of women on the verge, trying to grasp what’s left of life: grieving, divorced, and hyperaware, searching, vulnerable, and unhinged, they exist in a world that deviates from our own only when you look too closely. With remarkable control and transcendent talent, van den Berg dissolves, in the words of the narrator of “Slumberland,” “that border between magic and annihilation,” and further establishes herself as a defining fiction writer of our time.

This is truly a beautiful book.” —Elizabeth Gilbert "Proves that there is grace in letting go, stepping back and giving yourself time to repair in the dark...May is a clear-eyed observer and her language is steady, honest and accurate—capturing the sense, the beauty and the latent power of our resting landscapes." —Wall Street Journal An intimate, revelatory book exploring the ways we can care for and repair ourselves when life knocks us down. Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a break up, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. A moving personal narrative shot through with lessons from literature, mythology, and the natural world, May's story offers instruction on the transformative power of rest and retreat. Illumination emerges from many sources: solstice celebrations and dormice hibernation, C.S. Lewis and Sylvia Plath, swimming in icy waters and sailing arctic seas. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times. May models an active acceptance of sadness and finds nourishment in deep retreat, joy in the hushed beauty of winter, and encouragement in understanding life as cyclical, not linear. A secular mystic, May forms a guiding philosophy for transforming the hardships that arise before the ushering in of a new season.
