Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1890, the first assigned Maronite Catholic missionary arrived in New York City. Like many Lebanese immigrants, he brought with him his faith and the hope of building a better tomorrow. Now, modern-day parishioners can read about the complete history of the Maronite Church in America in a new book called History of the Maronite Catholic Church in the United States, Volume I, The Clergy. Five years of extensive research were needed to unearth never-before published documents and to translate historical records and correspondence from their original French or Arabic into English. To further understand the evolution of the Church, the authors also analyzed interviews conducted with parishioners and pastors over the past seventy years. This 440-page book is an essential addition to the bookshelf of any Maronite curious about the contributions our Church has made over the last 125 years.
Download or read book The Maronites written by Naaman Paul and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maronite Church is one of twenty-two Eastern Catholic Churches in communion with the Pope of Rome. Her patriarch is in Lebanon. Forty-three bishops and approximately five million faithful make up her presence throughout the world. The story of Maron, a fifth-century hermit-priest, and the community gathered around him, later called the Maronites, tells another fascinating story of the monastic and missionary movements of the Church. Maron's story takes place in the context of Syrian monasticism, which was a combination of both solitary and communal life, and is a narrative of Christians of the Middle East as they navigated the rough seas of political divisions and ecclesiastical controversies from the fourth to the ninth centuries. Abbot Paul Naaman, a Maronite scholar and former Superior General of the Order of Lebanese Maronite Monks, wisely places the study of the origins of the Maronite Church squarely in the midst of the history of the Church. His book, The Maronites: The Origins of an Antiochene Church, published during the sixteenth centenary of Maron's death, offers plausible insights into her formation and early development, grounding the Maronite Church in her Catholic, Antiochian, Syriac, and monastic roots. Abbot Paul Naaman is a Maronite scholar and former Superior General of the Order of Lebanese Maronite Monks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notables and Clergy in Mount Lebanon analyzes the relations between the Maronite notables and the Church in the context of socio-economic transformations in Mount Lebanon in the period 1736-1840. Special attention is given to the influence of external forces, such as the economic interference of the European nations, the Syrian and Ottoman administrative framework and the increasing involvement of the Vatican in the affairs of the Maronite community. The emphasis is laid on the role of religious foundations, or waqfs, in the process of social and economic integration, both within the Maronite community and in the wider frameworks in which it gradually became incorporated. These external and internal factors can explain the remarkable political emancipation of the Maronite Church, which assumed an important role in the history of Mount Lebanon in the 19th century.

Book Synopsis Maronite Church Historiography by : Sana Hanna Tannoury

Book excerpt: While Maronite clerical historiography covers a range of periods and historical accounts of the Maronite community and the Church; however, there seem to be some general themes that keep recurring in the literature making up a certain structure that could be thus analyzed and studied. By mapping and assessing the main themes accounted for in Maronite clerical historiography, this thesis asserts that the latter changes over time and according to the give political and social environments; the major change that has occurred in Maronite clerical historiography came about with the creation of the state of Lebanon and the inclusion of the Maronite Church under this entity. The historical accounts that preceded 1920 tended to focus on the Maronites as an entity combining both the community and the church, constantly adhering to the teachings and doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church. After 1920 and with the trends of secularization of history and the transcendence of the Maronite identity into a Lebanese identity, clerical accounts changed with regards to relationships with other entities, the identification of the enemy and the interpretations of origins and political conceptualization.
