Book excerpt: After being diagnosed with a potentially fatal disease I began journaling. It became a healing process. In between relapses I began writing stories of my youth and continued to what could now be called the last third of my life. Reflections of happy days spent with my grandparents, helping to care for my younger siblings, to my escape from a controlling mother. I began to realize how the conditions and environment they were living under created the turmoil and circumstances of those years. I continued to write my life through marriage, foster children, exchange students, several businesses and countless friends. The entire process made me realized what an extraordinary life I’d lived so far. How much better can it get? I can hardly wait.

Book excerpt: "A late nineteenth-century miners' camp called Coal Banks could have been nothing mor ethan a came-and-went map dot--fanishing once all resources had been stripped. Instead, the history of a determined community that triumphed over obstacles and hardships unfolded to transform the city into what it is today. Through two crippling World Wars, the crime-riddled era of prohibition, the Great Depression, and many challenging moments in time, Lethbridge peaked and valleyed over the last century--creating a unique and underappreciated prairie story along the way. And while Lethbridge may not be as glamourous or as celebrated as other locations in this world, a lack of notoriety does not make its background any less interesting or valuable. From American outlaws searching for lawless land for the whiskey trade to farmers, miners, investors, educators, art enthusiasts, and business owners looking to bring new opportunities to the region; The History of Lethbridge details the people who shaped thecity and the background behind iconic streets and structures that have appeared as a result over the past 150 years."--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Basilian Biography contains 632 biographical entries on the members of the Congregation of Saint Basil who died in the years between 1822, when the congregation was founded, and 2002. The dictionary presents the personal background, education, and various appointments as well as the character, talents, and bibliography of each member, while defining the contribution of each in the educational or pastoral work of the Basilian Fathers. This heritage belongs not only to the Basilian Fathers or the Catholic Church, but to the wider societies and cultures of the countries that were touched by the work of the Basilians. This second edition of the Dictionary of Basilian Biography is approximately three times the size of the original edition by Father Robert J. Scollard, published in 1969. The increase in size is due not only to the additional number of members who died between that year and 2002, but also to additional archival research into the lives and careers of the early members of the Congregation in France. It represents eight years of work by editor P. Wallace Platt and his editorial board, enriching the book and balancing its presentation.

Book excerpt: A delightful excursion through the Yiddish language, the culture it defines and serves, and the fine art of complaint Throughout history, Jews around the world have had plenty of reasons to lament. And for a thousand years, they've had the perfect language for it. Rich in color, expressiveness, and complexity, Yiddish has proven incredibly useful and durable. Its wonderful phrases and idioms impeccably reflect the mind-set that has enabled the Jews of Europe to survive a millennium of unrelenting persecution . . . and enables them to kvetch about it! Michael Wex—professor, scholar, translator, novelist, and performer—takes a serious yet unceasingly fun and funny look at this remarkable kvetch-full tongue that has both shaped and has been shaped by those who speak it. Featuring chapters on curse words, food, sex, and even death, he allows his lively wit and scholarship to roam freely from Sholem Aleichem to Chaucer to Elvis. Perhaps only a khokhem be-layle (a fool, literally a "sage at night," when there's no one around to see) would care to pass up this endearing and enriching treasure trove of linguistics, sociology, history, and folklore—an intriguing appreciation of a unique and enduring language and an equally fascinating culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on a body of lost and forgotten plays by women and situating them in the context of the early women's movement and its major discourses on suffrage, higher education, and social gospel, Kym Bird challenges the male-defined focus of recent historical studies into 19th-century Canadian drama. She argues that in a society that preferred to think of men and women as part of separate but complimentary spheres the woman naturally suited for the private world of the home and motherhood and the man for the public world of work and politics these plays advanced two forms of feminist politics. Liberal or equality feminism demanded the same rights and privileges for women as those accorded men; domestic or maternal feminism justified women's participation in the public sphere based on their natural materialism and moral superiority. the contradictory relations within these forms of feminism: on the one hand they represent women's social and political emancipation and, on the other, they affirm patriarchal structures and the status quo. Implicitly, this study calls into question what traditionally constitutes drama by treating plays written in non-canonical forms, mounted in nonprofessional venues, and published by marginal presses or not at all as important literary, theatrical, and historical documents.
