Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would America look like if the liberals ultimately triumph, say by the year 2050? "WTF! This is a Liberal Utopia!" - a satire on liberalism, all the unintended consequences of this heart felt way of looking at the world around oneself, usually in the cloistered halls of academia, some government agency, some left-wing, nonprofit activist organization and, or congress. A really fantabulous glimpse at what the future holds when these magnificent, starry-eyed wonders finally come out on top! By 2050, America will have gone through some slight changes thus resulting in many really noteworthy phenomena. For one, there is no longer any need for elections: there will be a "Forever President" whose last name could be 'Castro.' Furthermore, odds are 'welfare moms' will have largely replaced small business enterprises with their monthly, government stipends; most Americans will as likely as not have never worked, because it is distinctly possible that there won't be any save for those "shovel ready jobs" the Democrats will in all likelihood keep bringing up. Gaia, Mother Earth, will have probably been rescued from the threatening effects of “Global Warming,” “Global Cooling,” and “Climate Change,” by turning to more agrarian economy where ‘maze’ is likely to be the cornerstone. For those lucky enough to own wheeled transportation, they will likely be driving around in either battery-powered, bubble cars made of styrofoam, or Latino lowriders which might look a lot like sparklers driving along the potholed highways of tomorrow. The English language will have been replaced by local, cultural colloquialisms with phonetics playing the principle role for making up words and phrases and writing them out. All this and more will be seen through the eyes of one of those liberal visionaries, an Ivy League English Professor whose name is Felix Schwartz; the narrator, the author and “the reader.” A glimpse into our wondrous future and what awaits us all when the magnificent munificents are finally given the reins to take America down that ‘Yellow Brick Road’ to their utopian, imaginary 'World of OZ.' "WTF! This is a Liberal Utopia!"

Book excerpt: A Great Gatsby for the 21st century. A novel of the Jazz Age, The Big Town is the story of a failed businessman whose dreams of prosperity hinge on the secret proposition of a millionaire industrialist and a dangerous relationship he finds with a poor orphan girl chasing love in the great American metropolis. Harry Hennesey’s hopes of success, both in his household and the world, have driven him to sell his home in an Illinois small town and take his chances in the big city. He rents a room in a run-down hotel. He deals in wholesale items scavenged from yard sales and close-outs. One night at a movie theater downtown, he meets a teenage flapper named Pearl who latches onto him and won’t let go. For several years now, Harry has threatened his marriage and self-esteem with innumerable infidelities. Now he finds himself falling in love with a girl less than half his age. But that’s not all. Charles A. Follette, chairman of the board of the American Prometheus Corporation, comes to him with a slick proposition: find Follette’s missing niece, and the road to riches shall be his. Soon, though, Harry discovers a darker secret to the identity of the missing niece and what lies behind the urgency for her detection. It’s this revelation that leads him to a closer examination of what it means to the life he’s known since the birth of his children and that life he believes awaits him if he can only reach the top of the ladder. Harry’s story in The Big Town is set against a fantastic backdrop of an archetypal 1920s American big city. We see speakeasies, sanitariums, skyscrapers, and a glittering Gatsby-like party high atop the metropolis. Lost in his own moral confusions, we watch Harry try to reform his young lover and uncover the secret of her own past in a small canal town miles beyond a city where gangsters murder ordinary citizens and everyone seems to have a get-rich scheme as the Roaring ’20s come to a thunderous close. The Big Town evokes a lost era through language and flamboyant characters reminiscent of Fitzgerald, Dos Passos, Ring Lardner, etc. Yet it’s also eerily relevant to our own time with its study of the role of business, crime, morality, and love in our lives.

Book excerpt: Puzzling, disturbing rumors have reached Port Kar. Tarl Cabot, warrior and merchant, pirate and slaver, once of Earth, now of Gor, learns that the Farther Islands, Thera, Daphna, and Chios, west of the Island Ubarates of Cos and Tyros, are being bloodily and systematically ravaged by corsairs supposedly led by himself, by Bosk of Port Kar, as he is commonly known. How could this be? What is one to make of it? Why would so cruel and outrageous a hoax, apparently pointless, be perpetrated? Who would dare to do so? And, in the meantime, shipping is assailed and towns and villages are looted and burned. Tarl Cabot will investigate. He will seek vengeance. His quest will carry him to the taverns and palaces of corrupt, luxurious, decadent Sybaris, on Thera, where life is cheap and collared slave girls plentiful, where ruthless corsairs live by the sword and whip, and into strange and dangerous waters teeming with predatory vessels and monstrous sea life. As the mystery is unraveled, bit by bloody bit, he discovers that its threads may reach far beyond the Farther Islands.

Book excerpt: 1888 - In the midst of the murderous phrenzy plaguing the streets of Whitechapel, a case of mistaken identity, a courier's dispatch containing a coded message, and an urgent request from Scotland Yard draw Sherlock Holmes into a case that uncovers criminal schemes fixed on removing the heads of the governments of England, France, and the German Empire. Convinced these events are not simply calamitous coincidences, Holmes goes to his brother Mycroft, reasoning such endeavors must be orchestrated by a single malicious mastermind. With his trusted colleague, John Watson, at his side, as well as a rogues gallery of characters, old and new, Holmes throws himself into the fray. With international implications, this case tests Holmes' abilities to their very limits, as he doggedly pursues the identity of the man behind the malevolence, and the destruction of such a Sinister House.

When Cassandra Delamare, a young woman capable of giving birth to a wizard, is taken during the night by those working for an evil tyrant, a rescue attempt begins. But as Cassandra, the so-called wizard bearer, is taken further from home, a deeper plot unfolds, connecting people from across the land of Elt. From magical wizards to a long-forgotten witch, warring kings to a common whore, a despairing queen to a lowly servant girl, the ripples of the wizard bearer's taking are felt far and wide. Hutchinson has woven local interest into this tale by naming all of the places on the map of Elt after real villages and locations in the Yorkshire Wolds, England, close to his birthplace of Kingston upon Hull. “A sprawling dark fantasy adventure set in a richly built land on the cusp of a brutal war.” “Move over the Mother of Dragons and make way for the Mother of Wizards.”

Book excerpt: Emphasis on measurement techniques can interfere with understanding how well particular social programs in their field work. In Making a Difference: The Practice of Socioloy, Irwin Deutscher links traditional sociological concerns with applied sociology in an effort to overcome this problem. He contributes to the debate over the extent to which health, educational, and social programs initiated by the Roosevelt, Kennedy, and Johnson administrations have been successful in intimate, human terms. Deutscher believes that the introduction of a sociological perspective can provide a positive element to interdisciplinary pursuits. This belief, as well as his fresh perspectives on both the strengths and limitations inherent in applied sociology, offer the field a revitalising lift. As such, this highly informative, thought-provoking volume will be of interest to sociologists and policy makers in health, education, crime, welfare, and housing.
