Book excerpt: Door County in Wisconsin is at the southern edge of an enormous forest that wraps around the top of the globe and helps protect the world. Rising temperatures and changing climate are threatening the peninsula's trees and wetlands, a haunting sign that this oxygen-producing boreal forest is retreating. What we see in Door County is as significant as the dwindling of glaciers-but much closer to home.Shoreline at the Edge examines Paul M. Lurie's aerial photographs of the county's vulnerable but resilient land along the Lake Michigan coast. His images should serve as an inspiring call to everyone that shares a bond to the land and water of Door County.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to focus on the physical processes that cause coastal erosion. Many scientists and engineers have focused their research on the entire range of physical processes from the waves and the currents in the nearshore to the response of the beach, via sand transport, resulting in a changing coastal morphology. Of these many processes, this book focuses only on those which directly relate the generation of coastal erosion. Some chapters deal exclusively with the physical processes, while others provide examples of erosion problems although most of the chapter topics have clear implications for issues of coastal-zone management, these issues are not belaboured as several other books are already available in this area. The objective is to provide state-of-the-art presentation of the science of coastal erosion processes.

Book excerpt: Rhythmic, shoreline topography, termed shoreline meandering was investigated along Hatteras Island, North Carolina, using historical aerial photography. Two types of meanders were distinguished on the basis of form geometry. The temporal and spatial variability of meandering along the island were quantified using spectral and multivariate techniques. The data suggested that a model of the beach cycle in the nearshore zone in which the occurrence of small meanders is a function of (1) storm-current velocity and nearshore slope and (2) a post-storm balance of onshore and offshore sand transport due to the presence of topography-forced nearshore circulation explains the observed characteristics of small, rhythmic meanders. Large meanders are explained as regions of severe storm erosion caused by wave convergence over long, offshore shoals. (Author).
