Book Synopsis Shooting for Change by : Jung Joon Lee
Download or read book Shooting for Change written by Jung Joon Lee and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-23 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Shooting for Change, Jung Joon Lee examines postwar Korean photography across multiple genres and practices, including vernacular, art, documentary, and archival photography. Tracing the history of Korean photography while considering what is disguised or lost by framing the history of photography through nationhood, Lee considers the role of photography in shaping memory of historical events, representing the ideal national family, and motivating social movements. Further, through an investigation of what it means to practice photography under the normalized conditions of militarism, Lee treats the transnational militarism of Korea as a lens through which to probe the officially and culturally sanctioned readings of images when returning to them at different times. Among other themes, Lee draws on photography of militarized sex work, political protest in the military era, war orphans, and mass protests. Ultimately, Lee treats the formative periods in nation building and transnational militarization as both backdrop and cultivator for photographic works.

Book Synopsis Shooting the Family by : Patricia Pisters
Download or read book Shooting the Family written by Patricia Pisters and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shooting the Family, a collection of essays on the contemporary media landscape, explores ever-changing representations of family life on a global scale. The contributors argue that new recording technologies allows families an unusual kind of freedom—until now unknown—to define and respond to their own lives and memories. Recently released videos made by young émigrés as they discover new homelands and resolve conflicts with their parents, for example, reverberate alongside the dark portrayals of family life in the formal filmmaking of Ang Lee. This book will be a boon to scholars of film theory and media studies, as well as to anyone interested in the construction of the family in a postmodern world.

Download or read book The Murder of the Century written by Paul Collins and published by Crown. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “enormously entertaining” (The Wall Street Journal) account of a shocking 1897 murder mystery that “artfully re-create[s] the era, the crime, and the newspaper wars it touched off” (The New York Times) AN EDGAR NOMINEE FOR BEST FACT CRIME • “Fascinating . . . won’t disappoint readers in search of a book like Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City.”—The Washington Post On Long Island, a farmer finds a duck pond turned red with blood. On the Lower East Side, two boys discover a floating human torso wrapped tightly in oilcloth. Blueberry pickers near Harlem stumble upon neatly severed limbs in an overgrown ditch. The police are baffled: There are no witnesses, no motives, no suspects. The grisly finds that began on the afternoon of June 26, 1897, plunged detectives headlong into the era’s most perplexing murder mystery. Seized upon by battling media moguls Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, the case became a publicity circus, as their rival newspapers the World and the Journal raced to solve the crime. What emerged was a sensational love triangle and an even more sensational trial. The Murder of the Century is a rollicking tale—a rich evocation of America during the Gilded Age and a colorful re-creation of the tabloid wars that forever changed newspaper journalism.

Book Synopsis Robert Churchill's Game Shooting by : MacDonald Hastings
Download or read book Robert Churchill's Game Shooting written by MacDonald Hastings and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the standard textbook on its subject has been revised by Robert Churchill’s biographer. Macdonald Hastings, himself well-known in the shooting field (and other fields as well), has incorporated comments on matters which, since Churchill’s Game Shooting as first published in 1955, required further enlargement or modification. He has also brought the entire work completely up-to-date. Macdonald Hastings, who collaborated with the author in the writing of the original edition, was Robert Churchill’s own choice to revise the text and this new edition of Churchill’s drill book, as the great gunmaker and coach himself liked to describe it, may be regarded as contemporarily definitive. None who read the first edition will want to miss this second one, in which every point of controversy and prejudice has been underlined with an editorial note to assist the shooting man in improving his own performance. To those who are still unfamiliar with Churchill’s method of teaching game-shooting, it is important to add that this books is aimed to help not merely the experienced shot who wonders why he is missing, but also the novice handling a gun for the first time. It contains complete and always practical advice on all forms of shot-gun work for everybody. Those who make good use of this manual will not only be welcome guests in any company but quickly pay the cost of the book out of the saving they make on wasted cartridges.
