Download or read book Marine Disasters and Shipwrecks of Newfoundland and Labrador written by Jean-Pierre Andrieux and published by St. John's, NL : Flanker Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newfoundland and Labrador has been the site of hundreds of shipwrecks throughout the last two centuries. The area has had many more shipwrecks than Sable Island. Shipwrecks on these treacherous coasts were frequent. Every year steamers and other types of vessels mistook their positions and went to their doom on the rocks. Many of the accidents happened during the summer and fall, when the weather is foggy but comparatively mild. The strong currents that drove vessels miles off their course and lack of foghorns and lighthouses were all major contributing factors to the loss of shipping. Marine Disasters and Shipwrecks of Newfoundland and Labrador was originally published in 1986. Meanwhile, so many new photographs and stories have since surfaced that it was decided to split the work into two separate volumes in chronological order, one from 1822 to 1938 and the second from 1939 to 1989. These two volumes are being reprinted in 2004 with additional stories and photographs, this time from 1822 to 1945, and from 1945 to 1998. Marine Disasters and Shipwrecks Volume 1 is the first of these two volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Truth is stranger than fiction." This old adage certainly applies to the schooners and steamers of Newfoundland and Labrador, and to the men that sailed them. Countless ships and sailors came to grief in Newfoundland and Labrador waters in the days before long-range forecasting and reliable navigational instruments. Anything that could conceivably have happened to a ship has happened along the shores of Canada's most easterly province. And more than likely it has been included in this volume of fifty-three tales of the sea, which span every coastline and range from the 1800s to the modern day.

The marine disasters that have occurred around Newfoundland's shores since John Cabot's time have been many; just how many may never be known. Recently, the late historian Keith Matthews and Captain Joe Prim estimated 10,000 to 15,000 vessels have been lost on or near Newfoundland and Labrador. Professor Thomas Nemec has focused on one area, the southern end of the Avalon Peninsula, and documented more than three hundred shipwrecks in that location.
