Book excerpt: Women in Nepal have long experienced poverty, social exclusion, and marginalization because of their gender, especially among ethnic minorities and low-caste groups. Between 2002 and 2013, the Asian Development Bank and the Government of Nepal developed and implemented the Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women Project to reduce poverty by empowering rural women and members of other disadvantaged groups through an integrated process of economic, social, legal, and political empowerment. This publication presents the case study of that project which contributed to Nepal’s drive to eradicate gender-based inequality.

Book Synopsis Women and WASH in Nepal by : Melissa Phillips
Download or read book Women and WASH in Nepal written by Melissa Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides an overview of the main WASH issues in Nepal with a specific focus on the experiences of women, in order to set out gaps in knowledge and areas in need of future attention. It offers a stocktake of current research, programmatic interventions and knowledge gaps on WASH in Nepal. The report also highlights challenges for the future. It is based on a comprehensive literature and policy review as well as field assessments drawn from NDRC. The report firstly sets out the broader context in Nepal with regard to social, political, cultural and environmental practices including those that impact on WASH practices. It also records the progress that has been made in many areas of society in spite of significant challenges such as the 2015 earthquake.A literature review summarises existing knowledge in the WASH-related areas of health, hygiene and sanitation, noting the variances due to gender, caste, ethnicity, economic status and location. the report then reviews access to water, paying particular attention to gender, and participation in programme and policy design. A case-study approach illustrates how these WASH-related issues are experienced at the local level in four districts in Nepal, with a policy review setting out the major stages in WASH policy design and implementation since the 1970s. The report concludes by setting out gaps in knowledge and critical areas for future action.
Book Synopsis Political Transformations in Nepal by : Mom Bishwakarma
Download or read book Political Transformations in Nepal written by Mom Bishwakarma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth analysis of the interrelationship between long-standing caste discrimination in Nepal, its vicious circle of impact upon the Dalit groups and the changes brought by the recent political transformations. It explores the links between identity politics, Dalit struggle and Dalit rights although Dalit identity is contested within the group. The author explores the types of institutional measures that would be required to achieve social justice for Dalit in Nepal and analyses the underlying causes and nature of the deeply entrenched social, economic, education and political inequality manifested in the life cycle of Dalit. The book examines contemporary political transformations, including state restructuring and federalism processes, and explores different models of federalism by a variety of experts in detail; this is done with a view to making specific findings on the required institutional reform measures for the improvement of Dalit inclusion and representation in state mechanisms and policies. This book contributes to the literature on the caste and Dalit discourse by proposing that the hegemonic caste structure is deeply entrenched and needs to be deracinated by asserting unified group politics of recognition in Nepal. Political Transformations in Nepal will be of interest to academics working on South Asian Politics, Identity Politics, and Asian Social Policy.

Book Synopsis Contemporary Environmental Problems in Nepal by : Keshav Bhattarai
Download or read book Contemporary Environmental Problems in Nepal written by Keshav Bhattarai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines contemporary environmental challenges facing Nepal, this landlocked country’s representativeness in the wider South Asian context is both distinct and generalizable. In large part, this is because of its extremes of physiographical structure- plains, hill ranges, mountainous massifs - and wide range of altitudinal terrains, which represent and replicate South Asian and East Asian continental conditions differing as markedly as humid tropical lowlands, sub-tropical hill ranges and temperate to sub-arctic mountainous environments. Associated forest regimes, in which deforestation and reforestation patterns have evolved in recent times, and differing densities of settlement and cleared agricultural landscapes in each of these altitudinal zones, add to the environmental diversity of Nepal. Associated fauna and exotic species are in various states of endangerment especially Bengal tigers, one horned rhinos, wild elephants, crocodile, musk deer, and peasants, to name a few- so that their forested and mountainous habitats as ‘Wild Life Reserves’ also deserve our attention, and are featured in this monograph’s remit.
