Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sherlock Holmes is truly a 'Man for All seasons', his image has been worked and re-worked for over a century now, and the Holmes of 1887 is not the Holmes of Today. In his multi-volume collection, we will show how different illustrators have visualised Holmes and the other characters who appeared in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works. Later volumes will celebrate Holmes in non-Canon stories as illustrators and authors put Holmes in other stories, but more of that later. This volume is not going to be very diverse, it is true to say that one person dominates. While it is true that there are illustrations by Charles Altamont Doyle, David Henry Friston, James Grieg and Walter Stanley Paget as well as all those images that appeared in the Bristol Observer, the majority of this book is going to be filled by one person, namely Sidney Paget. Just as nine tenths of an iceberg lies under the water, This book is 52/59's Sidney Paget, so if like me, you are an admirer of his work, you are in for a treat as every Sidney Paget Sherlock Holmes Image is here. If you don't like his work, skip this book and wait for later volumes, - You have been warned, but for many Sidney Paget's drawings of Holmes have the atmosphere of the period. The Fog filled labyrinth of London, the desolation of Dartmoor, and perhaps his most famous illustration as Holmes and Moriarty fight to the death at the top of the Reichenbach Falls. The contents of this book may have moved during transit, so care must be taken when opening this book. What is to be found within? - Four images by David Henry Friston for Beeton's Christmas Annual where Sherlock Holmes is seen for the first time with magnifying glass and long sideburns in the story 'A Study in Scarlet'. - We have images from two stories that appeared in 'The Bristol Observer', namely, 'The Sign of Four' then strangely later they did 'A Study in Scarlet'. - We also have James Greig and his two single drawings for 'A Study in Scarlet' in 1895 and then again 1896. - Six illustrations by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's father Charles Altamont Doyle for the 1888 'A Study in Scarlet' and finally - Four images by Sidney's younger Brother Walter Paget of 'The adventure of the dying Detective' in the Strand Magazine 1913. After that it's back to back Sidney, starting with 'A scandal in Bohemia' and ending with 'The adventure of the Second Stain.' WARNING: Parts of this book contain large amounts of Sidney Paget, if you are a sufferer of Pagetitus or a Pagetphobic, please do not buy this book. If you are a Pagetphile however, you may safety indulge yourself.

Book excerpt: I hope you left room on your bookshelf, because Sherlock Holmes: A study in illustrations Volume 2 is here, bigger, bolder, more bountiful and other words beginning with B. In it's packed pages, a plentiful plethora of pleasing pictures plus a few Pagets(sorry). An imaginative, intriguing itemized index of iconic illuminated images. In truth it's quite nice and big and will sit very well next to it's slightly smaller volume 1 brother, I am hoping for a big family as volume after volume take over your homes and you are forced to move to ever bigger houses. Answer me this, why do weather people always tell you about yesterday's weather, you lived through it after all, now in the last volume, we did have a persistent downpour of Paget throughout the book, with intermittent glimpses of Greig and Friston on some pages. This book is a more homogeneous effort, while there are some Paget images, they are more like a drizzle than a Wet Monsoon (there is such a thing as a Dry Monsoon, I never knew that). We have all the Sherlock Holmes images from 6 International Artists, Starting with the prolific German Artist, Richard Gutschmidt, both his signed works as well as his unsigned ones making a pleasing total of 228 illustrations and taking the prize as Page Hogger, as Paget did in Volume 1. Next, we travel across the seas to America, where Graham Grinham drew 6 illustrations for the St. Louis Star, a small number admittedly, but he had a very unique style. Bridging the Gap between the Americas and Europe, we next have Canadian born George Wylie Hutchinson, who travelled to England as a cabin boy before producing 42 Sherlock Holmes images for the Book versions of A Study in Scarlet. Staying in England, we have Arthur Twidle and his 17 images. Then Irish Born, American Artist Thomas Jeffs Nicholl. with his 33 Sherlock Holmes newspaper images (hence the quality). Finally, we go back to Europe again for French Cartoonist Raymond Pallier and his Hound of the Baskerville 108 image epic work. If my maths is correct that means there are 434 new images here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Sherlock Holmes: A Study in illustrations Volume lll, and now we finally enter the world of Sherlock Holmes in glorious colour, gone are the monochrome illustrations of Sidney Paget, Richard Gutschmidt and others, it is now, finally time for a splash of colour and in particular the work of our featured Artist Frederic Dorr Steele, and while it is true, given his importance in the Sherlock Holmes Illustration world and particularly America, that perhaps he should have appeared in an earlier volume, it is only in a colour volume, that his talents really shine with his wonderfully coloured Collier Covers (not an easy thing to say) and so his work has had to wait until now. The mention of Steele also links us nicely in with the Actor William Gillette, so we have a section about this man, who personified Sherlock Holmes for a generation and inspired the likeness Steele used in his illustration. So what is in this book, well we have a very cosmopolitan collections from artist from France, Ireland, America, Spain, & Britain, starting with Beeton's Christmas Annual of 1887, the publication which first introduced the World to Holmes or is that Holmes to the World? This is our first cover image as befits it's importance, then we have a rather pleasing front cover by French artist, André Galland, who sadly only ever did one illustration of Holmes. More covers follow from another French artist, namely Gaston Simoes da Fonseca, sorry we will have to split Fonseca's work over two volumes, because he only did 3 colour (shown here) and 128 monochrome images so he will be the featured artist in the next volume, think of his three colour images, here as an introduction to his main body of work. There is a short introduction to the English Artist Pamela Colman Smith and the Irish Illustrator Albert George Morrow before we come to the William Gillette section, with posters for his play and film and also a programme. This leads us onto Frederic Dorr Steele's Holmes and his Avatar of Gillette, as he appeared in print, over 200 pages as we explore the entire Steele collection. In addition to appearing in books and magazines, Holmes also appeared on Cards, and we have the complete collection of 25 "Turf" cigarette cards produced by Alexander Boguslavsky in 1923, strictly speaking these are not a Holmes collection, but a Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character one. Next we have a 1920s Joanquin Coll Salieti series of 40 cards that illustrated 3 Sherlock Holmes stories, Spanish text with an English translation. To round out the card section, we have a non-card, a beer mat, for the what was once a Whitbread Sherlock Holmes pub, but is now owned by Greene King. In 1933 Player's produced 25 characters from fiction cigarette cards set. We only include card number 21, Sherlock Holmes. Nearing the end of this volume we have 4 images by Wladyslaw Teodor (WT) Brenda. Last but not least we have a nice little puzzle by John French Sloan and a mystery about who originated a view of Sherlock Crossed legs, smoking a pipe. Take a look inside and you decide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So we are up to Volume 4 of Sherlock Holmes: A Study in illustrations and sorry to say we are back in the world of monochrome illustrations, and although some may say that we are now in the minor leagues, we have some fine collections to look at. This is a very eclectic mix of talent and draws heavily on French Illustrators and so within our major artist is Brazilian-born French illustrator Gaston de Forseca and his remaining 128 images to complete his Sherlock Holmes work. Some of his illustrations are not particularly flattering (Lord Robert St. Simon) or where of incidents that are referred to in back stories (Apache attack on Frank Moulton) or of people who are mentions in passing (Francis Prosper) or my favourite little Edward Rucastle. Next we have 100 illustrations from Czech born Josef Freidrich and while his drawings may remind you of similar scenes from Sidney Paget, they are different, as if they were taken from a different camera angle. These are the two big major players in this book as we look at 6 illustrations from a French newspaper by Solar D'alba. We cross to America and 13 book illustrations from Charles Raymond Macauley from the 1905 edition of the Return of Sherlock Holmes. Still in America John Richard Flanagan next takes to the stage with work he did for Collier's magazine, after Frederic Dorr Steele left. He did 8 illustrations and was originally from Australia. The next 4 illustrators share a common publication, namely the San Francisco Call, they are Stanley E. Armstrong, R. Thomson, Reginald Gordon Russom and Walter W. Francis and this group have 55 images between them. We continue with another American illustrator, Joseph Clement Coll, more famous for his other Doyle stories produced a montage of his work with an illustration of Sherlock Holmes. Back to France with 20 illustrations from Pierre George Dutriac for the 13 stories in the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, published in 1921. Back to America and the St. Louis Republic newspaper 1902 and 13 drawings of the Hound of the Baskervilles by B. Widman and then in 1907 Paul Henri Thiriat illustrated a French serialized version of the same story. Across the Channel to England where Henry Matthew Brock and Joseph William Simpson illustrated the red circle in the strand. Finally we have Arthur Ignatius Keller and his 11 illustrations from the New York Tribune in 1914. This makes a total of 398 illustrations for this volume, and that's it until Volume 5.

Book excerpt: Bringing Sherlock Holmes from the Victorian Era into the dark days of World War II, this imaginative new thriller confronts the world’s greatest detective with a killer emulating the murders of Jack the Ripper. London, 1942. A killer going by the name of “Crimson Jack” is stalking the wartime streets of London, murdering women on the exact dates of the infamous Jack the Ripper killings of 1888. Has the Ripper somehow returned from the grave? Is the self-styled Crimson Jack a descendant of the original Jack—or merely a madman obsessed with those notorious killings? In desperation Scotland Yard turn to Sherlock Holmes, the world's greatest detective. Surely he is the one man who can sift fact from legend to track down Crimson Jack before he completes his tally of death. As Holmes and the faithful Watson tread the blacked out streets of London, death waits just around the corner. Inspired by the classic film series from Universal Pictures starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, which took Sherlock Holmes to the 1940s, this is a brand-new adventure from a talented author who brilliantly evokes one of mystery fiction’s most popular characters.

With her inquisitive mind, Charlotte Holmes has never felt comfortable with the demureness expected of the fairer sex in upper class society. But even she never thought that she would become a social pariah, an outcast fending for herself on the mean streets of London. When the city is struck by a trio of unexpected deaths and suspicion falls on her sister and her father, Charlotte is desperate to find the true culprits and clear the family name. She’ll have help from friends new and old—a kind-hearted widow, a police inspector, and a man who has long loved her. But in the end, it will be up to Charlotte, under the assumed name Sherlock Holmes, to challenge society’s expectations and match wits against an unseen mastermind. An NPR Best Book of 2016

Book excerpt: A Study in Scarlet was written in 1886 and is the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, who would become the most famous detective duo in popular fiction. The story, and its main characters, attracted little public interest when it first appeared. Only 11 complete copies of the magazine in which the story first appeared, Beeton's Christmas Annual are known to exist now and they have considerable value. Although Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle wrote 56 short stories that featured Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlet is one of only four full-length novels. A Study in Scarlet was the first work of detective fiction to incorporate the magnifying glass as an investigative tool. The character of Sherlock Holmes has been portrayed by over 100 different actors in theatre, on radio, in film, on audiobook and on television.
