Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted to investigate the shear behaviour of large deep beams subjected to uniform load. Six tests were performed on specimens with identical cross sections and reinforcing, but under different loading configurations. Variables included: span, degree of cracking prior to loading, proximity to a disturbed region near a reaction, and type of flexural stress on the loaded face. The findings indicate a specific set of variables resulting in unconservative predictions made using a strut-and-tie model for simply-supported beams subjected to uniform load, confirming and validating recent results by other researchers. A fanning strut model is proposed and is shown to provide more conservative results. The emerging trend of high capacity in continuous uniformly-loaded specimens is supported by the experimental results, as is the high capacity of specimens uniformly-loaded on their flexural tension face. Further, the high strength of specimens with suboptimal crack orientations supports recent experimental work.

Nominal concrete strengths for all tests varied between 2,500 and 4,000 psi, and intermediate-grade ASTM A 15 reinforcing steel was used. All beams were simply supported. Tests consisted of thirteen test beams of three span-depth ratios, 1.66, 2.67, and 3.62, subjected to a uniformly distributed load. Beams contained longitudinal tensile reinforcing with or without web reinforcing. Both horizontal and vertical web reinforcing were used. Behavior was observed as span-depth ratio and web reinforcing were varied. Numerous modes of failure in shear were observed as beam configuration was varied. Modes of failure transitioned from shear to flexure as span-depth ratio increased and amount and orientation of web reinforcing were varied. Test data were correlated with mathematical models derived in this study and from models developed by others. The mathematical models were used to investigate shear behavior for deep beams. Equations were developed which adequately predict the medium shear behavior of deep beams with web reinforcing. Test data were also correlated with theories developed by others for flexural moment and deflection behavior. Generally, flexural moment behavior was adequately predictable.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation is to obtain information which will contribute to a better understanding of the strength and behavior of deep beams of reinforced concrete and steel subjected to slowly and rapidly applied loading, and to develop means for the prediction of this behavior. This report contains the following: (1) a thorough survey of the literature pertaining to the behavior of deep beams subjected to static and dynamic loads; (2) the results of static tests of twenty-three simply-supported, deep, reinforced concrete beams, fourteen under uniform loading and nine with a single concentrated load at midspan; (3) the results of dynamic tests on two simply-supported, deep, reinforced concrete beams; and (4) the results of one test of a deep, steel beam of I-shape cross section subjected to slowly-applied uniform loading. Experimental results are compared with theory. (Author).

Book excerpt: This investigation determined the influence of end restraint on the strength and behavior of reinforced concrete deep members subjected to slowly applied loads as a basis for the development of minimum design considerations. The end restraint was applied in such a manner as to simulate that which would be developed in continuous beams or frames. Static tests were made on fifteen beams of which five were simply supported and ten were restrained. The investigation is concentrated on the crushing stage as the last stage for which meaningful concrete strains were available. It is shown that deep beams do have a capacity beyond crushing in terms of deflections, and, sometimes, of moments. This reserve capacity is not now predictable in the same manner as the procedure developed herein to predict the capacity at crushing. (Author).

Book excerpt: Experimental research was conducted to investigate the influence of axial load and prestress on the shear strength of web-shear critical reinforced concrete elements. The ability of two design codes, the ACI code and the CSA code, to accurately predict the shear strength of web-shear critical reinforced concrete elements was investigated through two sets of experiments performed for this thesis, the panel tests and the beam tests. The experimental results indicated that the CSA code provided better predictions for the shear strength of web-shear critical reinforced concrete members subjected to combined axial force and shear force than the ACI code. The experimental results from the panel tests and the beam tests followed a similar trend of variations. Both the inclined cracking strength and the ultimate shear strength were increased by compression and were reduced by tension. The specimens subjected to very high compression failed explosively without developing many cracks. The inclined cracking strength could be predicted with good accuracy if the influence of the co-existing compression on the cracking strength of the concrete and the non-uniform distribution of the stresses over the depth of the cross-section were considered. The strength predictions using the ACI code for these tests were neither accurate nor consistent. The ACI code was unconservative for members subjected to compression and was excessively conservative for members subjected to tension. In contrast, the strength predictions using the CSA code for these tests were generally conservative and consistent. The CSA code accurately predicted the response of specimens subjected to compression and was somewhat conservative in predicting the shear strength of specimens subjected to tension.A total of six panels, reinforced almost identically, were tested under different combinations of uni-axial stress and shear stress. In addition to the panel tests, a total of eleven I-shaped beams, with the same web thickness, were tested under different combinations of axial force and shear force. The parameters for these beams were the amount of longitudinal reinforcement, the amount of transverse reinforcement, and the thickness of the flanges. The beams were simply supported, but the loading geometry was specially designed to simulate the loading conditions in continuous beams near points of inflection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current shear design provisions of the ACI 318 specifications limit the yield strength in transverse reinforcement to 60 ksi. Advancement in technology has led to the fabrication of High Performance steel. Use of HP steel in reinforced concrete could lead to cost savings by reducing the amount of steel required due to the inherited high strength and increase of the service life of structural members due to its enhanced corrosion resistance. This research is undertaken to examine the use of high performance steel as a feasible reinforcement material for reinforced concrete structures. Commercially available steel, Micro-Composite Multi-Structural Formable (MMFX), conforming to ASTM A 1035, was selected for this study. MMFX steel has minimum yield strength of 100 ksi. This experimental program comprised eighteen tests using nine large-scale reinforced concrete beams subjected to static loading up to failure. The key parameters considered in experimental program were the steel type and the amount of shear reinforcement. This research investigated crack width, modes of failure, deflection, stirrup strain, ultimate load carrying capacity and the behavior of the MMFX steel as transverse reinforcement for concrete beams. Results from the experimental program show that by utilizing the higher yield strength and consequently reducing the reinforcement ratio of MMFX steel, the beams can achieve almost the same load-carrying capacity as the beams reinforced with conventional Grade 60 steel. Also, beams reinforced with MMFX showed similar deflections at service load as the beams reinforced with Grade 60 steel. Therefore, reduction in the reinforcement ratio of MMFX steel, did not affect the serviceability of these beams. Analysis shows that the ACI 318, CSA, and AASHTO LRFD design codes can closely predict the ultimate shear strength for beams reinforced with high performance steel having yield strength up to 100 ksi. The beams were also analyzed using a well-established Mo.
