Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago I served as Dean of Students at my school. I was responsible for handling discipline problems.. As I would recommend discipline according to my district;’s uniform discipline code handbook, I began to notice an alarming trend in the students who were reffered to my office for discipline. Students who were fighting, arguing, bullying were getting younger and younger. My normal pre-teen hormone driven offenders were being outnumbered by six, seven and eight year-old girls. Alarmed by this, I decided to conduct in-house research to gain insight as to where they were getting this behavior from. I received permission to conduct the research from my principal, and promised to share my findings with him, my colleagues and most importantly, their parents. I created a survey and distributed it to 3-8th grade girls. I analyzed the results and was horrified by what they yielded. Their behavior was a carbon-copy of how we, African-American women, treat each other. The envy, jealousy, contempt that these girls had for each other is displayed by us! Puzzled and concerned, I began to think about how we as a school can began to have dialogue with the students to become change agents. But in order to get them to change, we ourselves must do so. This led me into further reflection on how we treat each other at work, in church, and in our family. I began with myself, and there my journey began. I welcome you to follow my journey as I go from the researching a subject, to becoming the subject of my research! As you read my story, it WILL eventually become yours! You will see some unflattering and often ugly behavior. Most was done by me at church, at work and with my family. I throw myself under the bus, but I take a few of you under with me. Remember the objective is to heal, not hurt. If you can’t say “Amen”, say “Ouch!”.

Book excerpt: 27 short stories. 27 narrators. 1 terrifying puzzle. There’s something disquieting about a town with too many twins, a killer pie, and a man with two different color eyes. When Cain, a devilish stranger with a candle wax smile, moves into a rural southern town people are brutally murdered with alarming rapidity. It’s up to a band of curious high schoolers, a decrepit hermit, and a grieving mortician to solve the riddle and keep the town from being destroyed. That is if they can survive cannibalistic dentists, body-snatching demons, and oftentimes worst of all, each other. {Smile} is a horror novel made up of 27 short stories narrated by 27 unique voices. Each story is told in alphabetical order by title, but when combined they interweave to tell an intense and twisted tale about one man/demon/thing’s quest to become human through manipulation and murder.

Book excerpt: An incisive, beautifully written first novel by a former supermodel that explores the glamorous and gritty world she inhabited Only a handful of women in the world have experienced what Paulina Porizkova has--being whisked away to model in Paris while still a teenager, reaching the pinnacle of the profession before her schoolmates had even graduated--and fewer still have the insight to capture it on paper. In her first novel, Paulina tells the story of Jirina. A tall, scrawny fifteen-year-old girl from Sweden, she's much more accustomed to taunts and disdain than admiration and affection, whether from her classmates or her own family. That all changes when her only friend, Hatty, asks to practice her makeup and photography skills on Jirina. Almost before she knows it Jirina is on a plane to Paris, where she will spend the summer in a milieu entirely alien to her. Living at the home of her modeling agency's owner and constantly subjected to blunt physical assessments, catty and often cruel fellow models, and womanizing photographers--and, miraculously enough, while sometimes feeling truly beautiful--Jirina embarks on a journey beyond her wildest imaginings. Between photo shoots in Italy and Morocco and parties with models and musicians, Jirina manages to make a few friends, fall in love, and, eventually, feel the very adult pain of betrayal and heartbreak. Told with the grace, simplicity, and accuracy that can only come from real-life experience, A Model Summer is both the debut of a notably talented novelist and an unusually well-informed look behind the scenes at a world many people fantasize about, but few really know.

Book excerpt: Meet Dolores Price. She's thirteen, wise-mouthed but wounded. Beached like a whale in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the chocolate, crisps and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies. When she finally rolls into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before really going belly up. In his extraordinary coming-of-age odyssey, Wally Lamb invites us to hitch an incredible ride on a journey of love, pain, and renewal with the most heartbreakingly comical heroine to come along in years. At once a fragile girl and a hard-edged cynic, so tough to love yet so inimitably loveable, Dolores is as poignantly real as our own imperfections.

Book excerpt: A darkly humorous, surprisingly poignant, and utterly gripping debut novel about a guy who works in Hell (literally) and is on the cusp of a big promotion if only he can get one more member of the wealthy Harrison family to sell their soul. Peyote Trip has a pretty good gig in the deals department on the fifth floor of Hell. Sure, none of the pens work, the coffee machine has been out of order for a century, and the only drink on offer is Jägermeister, but Pey has a plan—and all he needs is one last member of the Harrison family to sell their soul. When the Harrisons retreat to the family lake house for the summer, with their daughter Mickey’s precocious new friend, Ruth, in tow, the opportunity Pey has waited a millennium for might finally be in his grasp. And with the help of his charismatic coworker Calamity, he sets a plan in motion. But things aren’t always as they seem, on Earth or in Hell. And as old secrets and new dangers scrape away at the Harrisons’ shiny surface, revealing the darkness beneath, everyone must face the consequences of their choices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES, LOS ANGELES TIMES, USA TODAY BESTSELLER The life and legacy of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, wife of John F. Kennedy Jr., are reexamined in this captivating and effervescent biography that is perfect for fans of My Travels with Mrs. Kennedy, What Remains, and Fairy Tale Interrupted. A quarter of a century after the plane crash that claimed the lives of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn, and her sister Lauren, the magnitude of this tragedy remains fresh. Yet, Carolyn is still an enigmatic figure, a woman whose short life in the spotlight was besieged with misogyny and cruelty. Amidst today’s cultural reckoning about the way our media treats women, Elizabeth Beller explores the real person behind the tabloid headlines and media frenzy. When she began dating America’s prince, Carolyn was increasingly thrust into an overwhelming spotlight filled with relentless paparazzi who reacted to her reserve with a campaign of harassment and vilification. To this day, she is still depicted as a privileged princess—icy, vapid, and drug-addicted. She has even been accused of being responsible for their untimely death, allegedly delaying take-off until she finished her pedicure. But now, she is revealed as never before. A fiercely independent woman devoted to her adopted city and career, Carolyn relied on her impeccable eye and drive to fly up the ranks at Calvin Klein in the glossy, high-stakes fashion world of the 1990s. When Carolyn met her future husband, John was immediately drawn to her strong-willed personality, effortless charm, and high intelligence. Their relationship would change her life and catapult her to dizzying fame, but it was her vibrant life before their marriage and then hidden afterwards, that is truly fascinating. Based on in-depth research and exclusive interviews with friends, family members, teachers, roommates, and colleagues, and featuring never-before-seen family photos, this comprehensive biography reveals a multi-faceted woman worthy of our attention regardless of her husband and untimely death.
