Book excerpt: Bring Morocco into your kitchen with Ruth Barnes, the Petite Gourmande. In Sharing Morocco: Exotic Flavors from My Kitchen to Yours, Ruth Barnes bring to life the rich culinary history of her family’s homeland while also making the cuisine accessible to the home cook. She shares her tips and techniques for preparing Moroccan classics like bastilla, lamb with apricots and prunes, and chicken with preserved lemons, as well as more familiar dishes like baba ganoush, baklava, and kebabs. Like so many home cooks, Barnes is a busy spouse, parent, and professional who cannot spend all day in the kitchen preparing complicated meals. But, like so many, she is committed to serving her family home-cooked meals that are fresh, healthy, and flavorful. In Sharing Morocco, she has simplified the recipes that she loves by identifying common ingredient substitutes or demystifying the complex spice combinations so often found in Moroccan cuisine. She does not shy away from shortcuts, like utilizing pre-made phyllo dough. And, as an avid hostess, she is an advocate for freezing an extra batch of this or that to serve to unexpected guests! Sharing Morocco is an ideal cookbook for home cooks who are new to the flavors of the Middle East or who simply enjoy exotic food. Readers will find Barnes to be a warm and welcoming guide to a culinary journey of the colorful spices and vibrant flavors of her homeland.

Book excerpt: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Morocco’s economic track record was challenged in recent years by a series of exogenous shocks, to which the authorities responded vigorously. Facing a difficult international environment, the authorities adopted, with the support of the Fund’s Precautionary and Liquidity Line (PLL), a policy program aimed at restoring fiscal and external buffers while strengthening competitiveness and promoting higher and more inclusive growth. The program remained broadly on track and the authorities did not draw on the PLL. The outlook is improving but remains subject to significant downside risks. Growth will slow in 2014, but it is expected to accelerate over the medium term owing to structural reforms and improved global conditions. However, this outlook remains subject to major external risks. A protracted period of slower growth in Europe, a surge in global financial market volatility linked to the exit from unconventional monetary policies in large advanced economies, and higher oil prices resulting from geopolitical tensions could significantly degrade the balance of payments. The authorities are requesting a two-year successor PLL arrangement with a lower access (550 percent of quota) than the first arrangement. The current PLL has provided useful insurance against external risks while anchoring the authorities’ reform agenda and sending positive signals to markets. Given significant global risks, a successor arrangement, which the authorities intend to treat as precautionary, would continue to support their policies. The lower access reflects the strengthening of the economy in the past two years as well as a balance of risks lower than two years ago. Staff considers that Morocco continues to qualify for a PLL arrangement and recommends the approval of the authorities’ request. The proposed arrangement carries low risks to the Fund and would have minimal impact on the Fund’s liquidity were the authorities to draw on the full amount available. The authorities’ policy package provides reasonable prospects of exit at the end of this arrangement if external circumstances warrant.

Book excerpt: After a robust post-pandemic recovery in 2021, another severe drought and spillovers from Russia's invasion of Ukraine slowed growth and raised inflation in 2022. The authorities' policy response has been very strong, with fiscal, monetary, and financial policies appropriately calibrated to preserve macroeconomic stability while protecting the most vulnerable from the impact of the shocks. In addition, the authorities have accelerated the implementation of the vast program of structural reforms needed to make growth stronger, more resilient, and more inclusive. and made progress in further strengthening their institutional policy frameworks.

Book excerpt: From the terraces of Tangier's Cafe Hafa to the depths of the Marrakesh medina, Moroccans and long-time expats of Morocco share their stories. In these pages, you will travel all over Morocco. No doubt, you will find some familiar names and revisit some familiar places. Nestle back into the Jinn-haunted digs of Tahir Shah's Dar Khalifa in Casablanca. Camp out with the semi-nomadic friends of Alice Morrison. Dip a spoon into the traditional Friday afternoon couscous with Myronn Hardy in the quiet folds of the Middle Atlas. Remain as linguistically confused from Fez to Tangier as Zora O'Neall. Peel back the folds of Moroccan history with Richard Hamilton and dive into the mythology of a Sufi saint in a little-visited Souss region with Lucas Peters. Experience that first awkward hammam experience with Amanda Mouttaki and be enchanted by Saeida Rouass's poetic ode to her very intimate Morocco. And be inspired by Suzanna Clarke in Fez and witness how her community has responded to the global pandemic.Lynn Houmdi and Eirlys Davies write painfully true accounts of their first years in Morocco and all the necessary adjustment - physical, emotional, and mental - that this entailed. Meanwhile, environmentalist Hazim Azghari and former director of the Tangier American Legation, Gerald Loftus, open doors to their own private Moroccos, each a wonderful introspection that speaks to a very individual experience that very few of us will likely have the joy of repeating. Dina Benbrahim takes you on a bouncy typographic tour of Tangier as only she could, while Zakariaa Aitouraies brings us in on his reflection about what being Moroccan means to him. To add to this, the photography of Amina Lahbabi and Suzanna Clarke that grace these pages gives you a glimpse into the Morocco that captures their eye. These libraries are hubs for young primary and secondary students. They facilitate a love for reading, language and learning. What began as one small, purple library in Erfoud has blossomed into dozens throughout the distant regions of the country. Thank you for your support!A Journey Beyond Travel publicatio

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only monarchy in North Africa, Morocco has one of the more diversified GDP mixes in the region, and the mainstays of the economy include agriculture, tourism, and the textiles industry; higher-end manufacturing, IT and communications, and outsourcing are also all becoming increasingly important. The past few years have seen some significant changes, yet the kingdom has remained stable, even amidst the broader regional turmoil. After 2.7% growth in 2012, economic activity in Morocco ramped up in 2013, increasing by 4.4% as GDP hit Dh864.6bn (€76.8bn), driven in large part by the agricultural sector. The kingdom faces exogenous challenges – such as low external demand and high commodity prices – as well as domestic complications including a fiscal deficit and unemployment, but following the government reshuffle in mid-2013, the prospects look far more positive. With the 2014 budget setting a more dynamic tone as the government takes steps to redress key fiscal imbalances, there are strong indicators pointing to the economy’s ability to continue to grow.

Book excerpt: The first edition of Morocco was published one year before the mass protests of the Arab Spring rocked the Moroccan state. Post-Arab Spring, the country has a new constitution and government, but the state remains uncompromising on any true reform of the monarchy’s claims to power. This new edition provides an introductory overview of the history, contemporary politics, economy, and international relations in Morocco and offers an examination of the challenges to tradition and modernity in the post-colonial state. It has been revised and updated to include analysis of the country’s evolving politics in the years following the Arab Spring, and the consequences this has had for the country’s traditional monarchy. It pays particular attention to the new constitution, the policies of the new Islamist-led government, and it includes an analysis of Morocco’s foreign policy in the post-Arab Spring regional context. Drawing on key academic texts, the author provides a detailed analysis of Morocco, focusing on issues such as: • Morocco’s role within the region • Trade policies with Europe • Migration • Morocco’s Western Sahara policy • Ways of dealing with Political Islam • The extent to which European influence has affected Moroccan society Easily accessible to non-specialists, practitioners, and upper level undergraduate students, the book will be essential reading for those working in the fields of North African studies, International Relations and Middle East studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth has rebounded from the pandemic and the energy crisis, despite the 2023 earthquake and droughts. Morocco has benefitted from a stable macroeconomic regime and the deficit is narrowing following the pandemic and energy crisis with the government debt ratio is around 70% of GDP. Morocco has embarked on major reforms to encourage investment and to extend health insurance and social protection, but a stronger convergence path will be needed to achieve the vision in the New Development Model. Morocco’s labour productivity gap with the frontier remains large, although it has narrowed. FDI flows have been strong, but domestic private investment is low, and Moroccan firms face obstacles in performing better. Morocco’s young population is an asset, but the labour market suffers from high youth unemployment and low female employment. Emigration is significant. Widespread informality leads to low wages, poor-quality jobs and weak skills. Morocco has made an ambitious commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 compared to 2010 and to net zero by 2050, benefiting from the country’s potential for renewables-based generation. The country is vulnerable to climate change and already faces significant water stress. SPECIAL FEATURES: BOOSTING INVESTMENT, FIRM PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCTIVITY; CREATING MORE AND BETTER JOBS
