Book excerpt: Herein is the story of a boy Rusty whose heartstrings are stretched taut with happiness, fright, sorrow, shame and physical pain while budding to adulthood. Rusty's often self inflicted predicaments are conveyed in hindsight with hilarious jocularity while the urgency of their real occurrence in time are confessed with honest clarity so profuse it's impossible not to become entangled in Rusty's wheeling emotions. The joy and innocence of Rusty's spirited childhood is slowly eroded by deceit, misunderstandings, mistakes and heartbreak, yet Rusty rushes energetically forward while stumbling into brief rations of excitement and love for fuel. It arduously teaches Rusty to try to look at life with a little bit of levity and be convinced that another good time is bound to come sooner or later. The book shows the things we often work for the hardest sometimes become what we wanted least, and during such work we discover the things we just happen to get are of what sweet dreams are made.

Walk with the author along the narrow ridge between history and otherworld, which we encounter behind many a jagged rock, in a deep forest, or dark cave. We will meet giants there, mystical ladies, and the Kasermandl; and all have fascinating stories to tell. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Shaman of Oberstdorf tells the fascinating story of a sixteenth-century mountain village caught in a panic of its own making. Four hundred years ago the Bavarian alpine town of Oberstdorf, surrounded by the towering peaks of the Vorarlberg, was awash in legends and rumors of prophets and healers, of spirits and specters, of witches and soothsayers. The book focuses on the life of a horse wrangler named Chonrad Stoeckhlin [1549-1587], whose extraordinary visions of the afterlife and enthusiastic practice of the occult eventually led to his death-and to the death of a number of village women-for crimes of witchcraft. Wolfgang Behringer is one of the premier historians of German witchcraft, not only because of his mastery of the subject at the regional level, but because he also writes movingly, forcefully, and with an eye for the telling anecdote."--Amazon.ca.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mexican Revolution gave rise to the Mexican nation-state as we know it today. Rural revolutionaries took up arms against the Díaz dictatorship in support of agrarian reform, in defense of their political autonomy, or inspired by a nationalist desire to forge a new Mexico. However, in the Gran Nayar, a rugged expanse of mountains and canyons, the story was more complex, as the region’s four Indigenous peoples fought both for and against the revolution and the radical changes it bought to their homeland. To make sense of this complex history, Nathaniel Morris offers the first systematic understanding of the participation of the Náayari, Wixárika, O’dam, and Mexicanero peoples in the Mexican Revolution. They are known for being among the least “assimilated” of all Mexico’s Indigenous peoples. It’s often been assumed that they were stuck up in their mountain homeland—“the Gran Nayar”—with no knowledge of the uprisings, civil wars, military coups, and political upheaval that convulsed the rest of Mexico between 1910 and 1940. Based on extensive archival research and years of fieldwork in the rugged and remote Gran Nayar, Morris shows that the Náayari, Wixárika, O’dam, and Mexicanero peoples were actively involved in the armed phase of the revolution. This participation led to serious clashes between an expansionist, “rationalist” revolutionary state and the highly autonomous communities and heterodox cultural and religious practices of the Gran Nayar’s inhabitants. Morris documents confrontations between practitioners of subsistence agriculture and promoters of capitalist development, between rival Indian generations and political factions, and between opposing visions of the world, of religion, and of daily life. These clashes produced some of the most severe defeats that the government’s state-building programs suffered during the entire revolutionary era, with significant and often counterintuitive consequences both for local people and for the Mexican nation as a whole.

Horatio, Matthews eldest brother, threatened to steal his fiancee and keep the land and cattle promised to him upon their fathers death. Wanting to join the two biggest ranches in the territory would make Horatio a wealthy man. Matthew spent his meager savings on traps and a few supplies, and headed deep into the Lakota territory at the foot of the great Teton Mountains. Although there were few who were better with a gun than Matt, he knew nothing about trapping and mining for gold. Matt was a fast learner and with the help of old Jeb and the fierce Lakota brave he had befriended, he soon became adept to the ways of the mountain man.

Book excerpt: For a thousand generations, desert shamans of the far West sought order in the stars and in the mysteries and wonder of their grand, if unforgiving landscape. When summoned, they doctored the stricken, be they stoic elders or frightened little children. They conjured rains. Taking leave of reality, they rode whirlwinds and soared in magical flight. They epitomized a native American ability "to relate to the land in ways beyond a Western way of thinking." They're gone now. But there remain telling accounts of how, day-to-day, they lived: how omens foretold a shaman's destiny, how he learned his craft, how he could exercise his power for both good and evil. How a shaman could travel to the land of the dead and (hopefully) return. Drawing on the lore of a dozen tribes, Old Magic conjures the year-to-year life of a shaman - a life of service to his people, a life fraught with torment and danger, a life often taking a man or woman to the edge of madness.
