Book excerpt: Dr Wayne Somerville's Shallow Thought, Deep Mind gives you the knowledge and skills to succeed, thrive and make the world better. With stories, thought experiments and practical advice, Dr Somerville leads you from shallow thinking to the power of the deep mind. The human spirit is strong. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the human mind. But in this post-truth age, the ancient, simple ways of thinking and behaving that got us here threaten to take us out. Our thoughts and actions will determine what follows for us and the generations to come. We have been the problem. It is time to become the solution. Shallow Thought, Deep Mind is for everyone who takes on life's challenges and dreams of a brighter tomorrow. Drawing on his experiences as a clinical psychologist, horseman, bush regenerator and environmental activist, Dr Somerville guides you to discover who you really are and what you can achieve. Part 1 looks at shallow thought - what it is and how it can create trouble - and what it takes to find solutions to big problems. The book examines three challenges from the author's life: to find gentle therapies for psychological trauma, to develop a treatment for forest dieback and to protect rural communities from invasive gas field industrialisation. All these problems could only be solved by going beyond shallow thinking to the deep mind. Part 2 discusses the Key Mental Processes that determine all we know and do. Why 'key'? Because understanding and knowing how to use these capacities unlocks the power of the creative deep mind. Our conscious attention is limited: much goes on that we are not aware of. Dr Somerville takes us behind the scenes to show how we can use memory and imagination to learn from the past and to create the future, free ourselves from limiting beliefs, foster attitudes that generate success, break harmful word spells, employ powerful language to motivate ourselves and others, use our negative emotions positively, and tap into the subtle, but profound wisdom of our intuition and dreams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and their ability to predict outcomes using deep and shallow learning principles. The author first describes ANN implementation, consisting of at least three layers that must be established together with cells, one of which is input, the other is output, and the third is a hidden (intermediate) layer. For this, the author states, it is necessary to develop an architecture that will not model mathematical rules but only the action and response variables that control the event and the reactions that may occur within it. The book explains the reasons and necessity of each ANN model, considering the similarity to the previous methods and the philosophical - logical rules.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final writings by the world-famous spiritual teacher J Krishnamurti, in which he reflects to himself on the natural world around him and what this might tell us about human consciousness. Includes previously unpublished material. Most of Krishnamurti's books are transcriptions from the many talks he gave. This book however contains short pieces from his notebooks, which are heartfelt and intimate. More than 55 short entries, between one and six pages long, start with descriptions unfolding amidst mountains, jungles and rolling meadows and then end with his own spontaneous musings. The writing feels totally spontaneous and in-the-moment, and is never clichéd or too smooth. You are drawn to consider his words carefully, because your mind is quiet. For Krishnamurti, the challenge is to keep our minds free from preconceptions and ultimately free from any concepts at all. So, you don't "decide" to meditate and you never consciously meditate at all as a distinct action. You actively meditate from one second to the next but without effort. It's just how you are. Our minds can bring us down and seemingly conspire against us, but a quieter contemplation of how things truly are can also bring breakthroughs and peace. This is exactly what this book is for, through its vivid scenes and helpful contemplations. Krishnamurti is perfect for seekers who have exhausted all the "how tos" and are disillusioned by teachers who are coasting or who are writing books to generate an income when they have nothing to say. The spiritual market is maturing and there are many people who want more. This is for them.

The authors have distilled the organizational literature into a comprehensive approach for looking at situations from more than one angle. Their four frames view organizations as factories, families, jungles, and theaters or temples: The Structural Frame: how to organize and structure groups and teams to get results The Human Resource Frame: how to tailor organizations to satisfy human needs, improve human resource management, and build positive interpersonal and group dynamics The Political Frame: how to cope with power and conflict, build coalitions, hone political skills, and deal with internal and external politics The Symbolic Frame: how to shape a culture that gives purpose and meaning to work, stage organizational drama for internal and external audiences, and build team spirit through ritual, ceremony, and story

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Ecology and Education addresses "ecological understanding" as a transformative educational issue: a learning response to emerging insights into social-ecological relationships and the future of life on our planet. In the face of the existential threats posed by climate change, loss of biodiversity, pandemids and the associated ecological and social challenges; there is a need to extend our responses beyond scientific inquiry and technological initiatives. This book seeks to move the dialogue towards a deeper and broader understanding of the complexities of the issues involved. To achieve this, the book discusses issues rarely addressed through programs in "Education for Sustainability" and "Environmental Education," such as student defined knowledge systems, deep engagement with the implications of indigenous understandings, climate change as symptomatic of broad epistemological problems, social disengagement and differentiated barriers to meaningful change. This work is enriched by its focus on the learning and the learning systems that have led to our current predicament. This book seeks to initiate considerations of this kind, to invigorate education for sustainable, equitable, healthy and meaningful futures. As such, this book will be of great interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students in a range of education and environmental courses.

Book excerpt: For Paul Ferrini, there was a time when the very thought of Jesus left him cold. Instead of embodying the truth of Jesus' teaching, Christianity seemed to harbor the fearful thoughts and actions of people who were more committed to self-interest than to unconditional love. So when Ferrini felt Jesus' voice inside him saying, "I want you to acknowledge me," he resisted. In time, however, he came to realize that it was not Jesus he was rejecting but the untruths that had become attached to Christian teaching. Responding to the inner voice did not mean merely acknowledging Jesus as some great teacher who lived in the past, but also meant that he was opening himself up to a living presence within his own awareness. Once Ferrini reached this reconciliation, powerful words of spiritual truth began to flow through him. Reflections of the Christ Mind presents the most important teachings the author has received through his spiritual awakening. Here at last is a gospel devoted solely to Jesus' teachings of love, healing, and forgiveness. The teacher readers meet in these pages is both compassionate and open-minded-he is the Jesus Christians know in their hearts. Repudiating religious hypocrisy, intolerance, and spiritual pride, Ferrini rejects the dogmatic position of the Church, offering instead words of hope and healing that form the new gospel for today.

Book excerpt: Recent advances in computational algorithms, along with the advent of whole slide imaging as a platform for embedding artificial intelligence (AI), are transforming pattern recognition and image interpretation for diagnosis and prognosis. Yet most pathologists have just a passing knowledge of data mining, machine learning, and AI, and little exposure to the vast potential of these powerful new tools for medicine in general and pathology in particular. In Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning in Pathology, Dr. Stanley Cohen covers the nuts and bolts of all aspects of machine learning, up to and including AI, bringing familiarity and understanding to pathologists at all levels of experience. Focuses heavily on applications in medicine, especially pathology, making unfamiliar material accessible and avoiding complex mathematics whenever possible. Covers digital pathology as a platform for primary diagnosis and augmentation via deep learning, whole slide imaging for 2D and 3D analysis, and general principles of image analysis and deep learning. Discusses and explains recent accomplishments such as algorithms used to diagnose skin cancer from photographs, AI-based platforms developed to identify lesions of the retina, using computer vision to interpret electrocardiograms, identifying mitoses in cancer using learning algorithms vs. signal processing algorithms, and many more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you read technology news, you’ll notice it’s not just a story of amazing new product introductions, or even that plus copycat product introductions. All the usual aspects of business are there: fierce competition, new contenders, old survivors, great ideas but business failures, mediocre ideas that somehow seem to succeed and prosper. As a reporter, commentator and blogger on mobile technology, I’ve collected what happened in the industry in 2014 and make predictions on what will and won’t happen in 2015. You can read what did happen in the mobile technology in 2014. Often I deliver a comment with the news item and usually there is a link to the web page of the original announcement. This way you can dive into any detail level you desire, read my news feed for the overview or follow the related web link to the longer article. History is moving so fast now that it is all recorded electronically, but I’m surprised no one else has collected it and presented it for consideration. Here is 2013 from the mobile technology industry for your consideration along with my own observations and opinions about where things are headed. It’s often overlooked that the technology industry is an industry. By that I mean its main concerns are profit and growth. As consumers we love the new products and unique abilities we are gaining from technology, but it is a business akin to any other, trying to seduce us to pry money out of our wallets. So I cover the horse race aspect of the business, who’s up, who’s down. Is that changing? Is that likely to change? The longer implications of what the technology industry is doing are vast and social. We are moving to an always on, always connected society where we can communicate with someone instantly and find an answer to any question quickly. The entire database of human knowledge is now available in the palm of your hand whenever you desire it. Everything is there, the good, the bad, right and wrong, hate and love, music and noise. We are obsessed with technology, not in and of itself, but as a means to an end. Technology is the means to satisfy our curiosity or even our desire for self-expression. We are taking photos machine gun-style with our smartphones and choose the few to share. As humans we are gathering ever more data about ourselves and sharing more about ourselves than we probably thought possible. Bill Gates was once asked why the computer industry had generated so much improvement in its products over a relatively few years. He gave some boring answer about Moore’s Law, but the real answer is that computers are in their teenage years. They are growing and growing. They will not always do so. So too the technology industry is in a state of rapid change. I see the shift to smaller devices as a new paradigm, smashing some businesses and growing others into giants. Their stories are here in the news. In short here are predictions for what won’t and will happen in 2015 for the mobile technology industry, breakdowns of marketshare figures on the horse race aspect of the business, chapters on Apple, Samsung, Google, Microsoft, Nokia, Blackberry, Amazon, Yahoo, news about social media giants Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Foursquare, SnapChat and the carriers themselves Verizon, AT&T, Sprint andT-Mobile. You can also review my 2014 mobile predictions and see my track record on predictions. Finally there are some essays on how all this mobile tech is figuring into our lives. I’ve divided the news into the subjects it covers, but also put in the appendix all the news as it came out in chronological ordering. You can read the firehose of events in the appendix, or just read about one topic at a time in the earlier chapters.
