Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language, he traditionally receives little notice in studies of children's literature. However, there is a fascinating relationship between Shakespeare and children's interests, and the Bard's works have been successfully adapted for children's use over several centuries. This book continues and parallels the author's previous study, Chaucer as Children's Literature, as part of a greater endeavor to evaluate the significance of traditional literature retold as children's literature in modern English studies. It examines the ways in which William Shakespeare's stories have been adapted for children, particularly in Mary and Charles Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare, which was almost immediately recognized as a classic of children's literature when it was first published in 1807. The author describes the significance of the Lamb's Tales as the pre-eminent children's adaptation of Shakespeare's literature, focusing particularly on the lavishly illustrated Edwardian editions which used pictures to convey Shakespeare's stories for children. Other topics include Victorian alternatives to the Lambs' stories, including anthologies from David Murray Smith, Abby Sage Richardson, and Mary Seymour; the lavish illustrations of Shakespeare's stories found in antique English textbooks; Shakespeare in nursery books, including sophisticated collections from Mary Macleod, Thomas Carter, Alice S. Hoffman, and other noted authors; and Shakespeare in multi-volume American collections, including The Children's Hour, Journeys through Bookland, and The Junior Classics.

Book Synopsis The Child in Shakespeare by : Charlotte Scott
Download or read book The Child in Shakespeare written by Charlotte Scott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the child on Shakespeare's stage. As a life force, an impassioned plea for justice, a legacy, history, memory or image of love or violence, children are everywhere in Shakespeare's plays. Focusing on Shakespeare's unique interest in the young body, the life stage, and the parental and social dynamic, this book offers the first sustained account of the role and representation of the child in Shakespeare's dramatic imagination. Drawing on a vast range of contemporary texts, including parenting manuals and household and pedagogic texts, as well as books on nursing and maternity, child birth, and child rearing, The Child in Shakespeare explores the contexts in which the idea of the child is mobilised as a body and image on the early modern stage. Understanding the child, not only as a specific life stage, but also as a role and an abstraction of feeling, this book examines why Shakespeare, who showed little interest in writing for children in the playing companies, wrote so powerfully about them on his stage.

Book excerpt: Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare is a book by the British author Edith Nesbit. It was originally published in 1907 in the United States as Twenty Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare: A Home Study Course. Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare is an expanded version of Nesbit's earlier book, The Children's Shakespeare (1897), a collection of twelve tales based on plays by William Shakespeare. For her second collection, Nesbit selected the same twenty tales included by Charles and Mary Lamb in their 1807 classic children's book Tales from Shakespeare. Nesbit's adaptations, targeting younger children, are shorter and also less moralistic than those by the Lambs. The book is edited by E.T. Roe and includes the editor's preface. It also includes a brief biography of Shakespeare, a pronunciation guide, and quotes from the plays.
