Book excerpt: Young urban African American women are at disproportionately high risk for HIV/STIs and current interventions focusing on individual factors (e.g., condom use self-efficacy) have not been sufficient to address this risk. Recent research suggests that an ecological approach that takes into account broader social and relationship factors may be more effective in meeting the needs of this population. The present study examined several relationship-level factors, including relationship power, avoidance motives for sex, and relationship commitment, and their potential interaction with the individual-level factor of condom use self-efficacy in predicting sexual risk-taking behaviors in a community sample of African American women aged 18-25 (N =132). The current study additionally considered the role of young women's ambivalence around condom use, through descriptive analyses. Out of the three relationship variables, only relationship power was found to interact with condom use self-efficacy to predict sexual risk. In addition, although not specifically hypothesized, relationship commitment predicted condom use over and above the variance accounted for by condom use self-efficacy, suggesting that relationship commitment may be particularly important in determining condom use for this population. Further, participants expressed ambivalence about condom use during their last protected and unprotected sexual encounters, suggesting that women do not always want to use condoms. Discussion of the results highlights the importance of considering relationship factors and ambivalence toward condom use in sexual risk-taking among young urban African American women. Limitations and implications for prevention programming are considered.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to assess the factors that relate to male condom utilization among sexually active African American college women at The University of Tennessee. College women between the ages of 18 to 24 are the most susceptible to contracting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) as they do not perceive themselves to beat risk. It is estimated that each year 12 million new cases of STDs occur and two thirds of those infected are under the age of 25 (Hale & Trumbetta, 1996). Women are among the fastest growing groups being infected with HIV. In 1997, 22% of all reported new cases of AIDS were women and of those 60% were African American. African American women of all ages were approximately 16 times more likely to be diagnosed with HIV than their White counterparts (Wingood & DiClemente, 1998). This study consisted of a convenience sample of 196 African American undergraduate females between the ages of 18 to 24. Participants were recruited through various student organizations affiliated with the Black Cultural Center. The Health Belief Model (HBM) Constructs perceived susceptibility, partner, perceived barriers, turnoffs, hassles, execution relationship concerns, self-efficacy, and cues to action were found to be positively correlated with condom use. There was no correlation between HIV/AIDS level of knowledge, perceived benefits, and perceived susceptibility, self and condom use. A stepwise regression was performed in order to ascertain whether or not the HBM constructs would predict the utilization of male condoms among African American college students. The results indicated that 22% of the variance in condom use could be attributed to the HBM constructs. The strongest predictor of condom use was self-efficacy (beta=.257) and perceived barriers, turnoffs (beta=.232).

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationships between HIV/AIDS knowledge, perceived risk and stigmatization, self-efficacy for using condoms, religiosity, and frequency of condom use in a sample of 154 African American college women. Four research questions were proposed: Do participants who engage in greater stigmatizing of PLWHA (people living with HIV/AIDS) participate in less condom usage; is greater HIV/AIDS knowledge positively related to frequency of condom use; does condom self-efficacy act as a mediator between stigmatizing of PLWHA and frequency of condom use; and, does perceived risk for HIV/AIDS act as a mediator between HIV/AIDS knowledge and frequency of condom use. The results showed that none of the three stigma dimensions reported significant correlations with frequency of condom use. Overall, no significant correlations were found between frequency of condom use and any of the other variables (i.e., HIV/AIDS knowledge, and perceived risk), except for condom self-efficacy. Research is needed to better understand gender and culturally-specific factors that contribute to Black women's HIV risk. The Theory of Gender and Power and the Theory of Planned behavior were used as theoretical frameworks in examining the effect of attitudinal beliefs (gender related beliefs), subjective norm beliefs (peer norms), and perceived behavioral control beliefs (relationship power) on sexual behavior in Black college women. Condom use and assertiveness in sexual communication were the dependent variables. Participants included 136 Black college women recruited through the department of psychology's subject pool and as student volunteers. Results revealed peer norms as a significant predictor of condom use, and agency and gender ratio imbalance beliefs as significant predictors of perceived relationship power. Findings have implications for understanding social and gender related factors for HIV prevention among Black women.

Book excerpt: Latina/o emerging adults living in southern states may be especially at risk of being disproportionately affected by HIV. In 2015, Latina/os aged 20 to 24 accounted for 14.7% of all 20-24-year old's living with HIV in southern states, despite the fact that 20 to 24-year-olds make up 3.7% of the region's overall population of individuals living with HIV (CDC, 2016; U.S. Census Bureau, 2017). Specifically, there continues to be groups of Latina/o emerging adults who do not use condoms when they are sexually active and who are not using condoms consistently. Condom use literature suggests that relationship factors, such as power dynamics and dating violence (DV) victimization, can play an essential role in Latina/o emerging adults' attitudes towards condoms and condom use behaviors. Hence, there is a continued need for studies focused on identifying factors that serve as barriers to and supports for southern-residing, Latina/o emerging adults' condom use behaviors. To this end, 196 Latina/o emerging adults (59 males, 137 females) completed a survey that asked questions about their sexual attitudes, behaviors, intentions, cultural factors, and DV. This study sought to examine the inter-relations among Latina/o emerging adult's DV experiences (i.e., victimization, perpetration), cultural factors (i.e., acculturation, traditional gender roles (TGRs), familismo), and condom use outcomes (i.e., attitudes toward condoms, condom use efficacy, condom use negotiation efficacy). Second, it sought to investigate whether biological sex and cultural factors moderated the relationship between DV experiences and condom use outcomes. Bivariate correlations revealed a number of associations between the variables and regressions analyses suggest that adherence to TGRs significantly affected whether or not females had perpetrated or experienced DV. Further, biological sex was found to moderate the relationship between DV perpetration and condom use negotiation efficacy and DV perpetration and Attitudes towards condoms such that the effect is stronger for Latinos compared to Latinas. Lastly, familismo beliefs was identified as an exacerbator, such that the positive relationship between DV victimization and condom use efficacy is particularly strong for individuals who possess higher familismo beliefs than those with lower familismo beliefs. This study's finding of Latina's increasing condom use negotiation efficacy among Latina's that perpetrate DV sheds insight into the possibility of Latinas utilizing physical violence as a method of achieving a balance of power and sexual control in a romantic relationship to protect themselves against STIs. Given this, future researchers should longitudinally investigate the nuances in DV perpetration and victimization behaviors among emerging adults with an emphasis on relationship power dynamics in heterosexual relationships among Latina/os.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth ages 15 to 24 account for half of the estimated 20 million new cases of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) that occur each year (CDC, 2013). Consistent condom use is an important intervention target to prevent STI contraction among youth. The present study evaluated whether motivation and self-efficacy to use condoms predict subsequent consistency of condom use in a community sample (N=166) of female youth (ages 13-21) at increased risk for STI contraction. Additionally, the current study investigated if these relations are moderated by frequency of sex under the influence. Exploratory analyses investigated these relations in sex events with steady boyfriends only separately from sex events with other guys only. Data were analyzed from Project SAFE, a randomized controlled clinical trial investigating the efficacy of a Computer-Assisted Motivational Intervention compared to Didactic Educational Counseling for sexual risk and protective behaviors. Both motivation and self-efficacy to use condoms demonstrated a significant positive linear relation with subsequent consistency of condom use. However, there was limited evidence for the moderating effect of frequency of sex under the influence. There was some indication that the pattern of results differed in exploratory analyses including only sex events with steady boyfriends compared to sex events with other guys. Analyses were re-estimated including past consistency of condom use as a covariate. In these analyses there was some evidence for a negative main effect of frequency of sex under the influence. These finding have implications for the development of tailored interventions and future research.

Book excerpt: Sexually transmitted diseases have reached epidemic proportions, especially among African Americans. However, African American women have emerged as being one of the hardest hit groups by the most fatal of sexually transmitted diseases - the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Although there has been much speculation regarding contributing risk factors specific to this group, previous research has focused mostly on low-income, uneducated or drug-addicted individuals. Still, these factors do not account for the infection rates among educated, non-addicted and financially stable women. In this study, psychological variables of self-efficacy and locus of control were explored study as potential risk factors in sexual decision making for African American women enrolled at two Midwestern universities. Locus of control was a significant predictor of normative beliefs regarding safer sex practices, while self-efficacy was not found to be a significant predictor for sexual decision-making. However, there was a significant interaction between self-efficacy and locus of control in relation to participants' intentions to practice safer sex. The results and implications for counseling, counselor education, research and prevention are discussed.
