Many of you won't like me no doubt and that's ok — I understand, I really do. I'm not all bad, though. I left the Isle of Skye in the early eighties to start my nursing course in Edinburgh and it's fair to say that I embraced the Capital City's temptations with arms wide open. When I moved into a shared flat I met Bill, a musician, and got involved with his band Low Down - you know, helping them out, doing a bit of driving and humping gear - it was great fun. Low Down was truly phenomenal. Man, I totally loved their music. We took drugs, I mean, I took drugs. Nothing heavy like, just recreational and I met a lot of girls who I didn't treat right and I'm not proud of my behaviour — that's the truth. Look, nursing was a female-dominated profession and male nurses were thin on the ground -- the opportunities for getting up to mischief were many. I worked hard and played harder. A lot of stuff I regret now. Especially what I did to Lisa – and others. Anyway it couldn't last, could it? They way I was living – something had to give. And it did.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex, Drugs, and Rock ‘n Roll: The American Counterculture of the 1960s offers a unique examination of the cultural flowering that enveloped the United States during that early postwar decade. Robert C. Cottrell provides an enthralling view of the counterculture, beginning with an examination of American bohemia, the Lyrical Left of the pre-WWII era, and the hipsters. He delves into the Beats, before analyzing the counterculture that emerged on both the East and West coasts, but soon cropped up in the American heartland as well. Cottrell delivers something of a collective biography, through an exploration of the antics of seminal countercultural figures Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Timothy Leary, and Ken Kesey. Cottrell also presents fascinating chapters covering “the magic elixir of sex,” rock ‘n roll, the underground press, Haight-Ashbury, the literature that garnered the attention of many in the counterculture, Monterey Pop, the Summer of Love, the Death of Hippie, the March on the Pentagon, communes, Yippies, Weatherman, Woodstock, the Manson family, the women’s movement, and the decade’s legacies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What led scientists to have acrobats copulate inside an MRI machine? Why do wordless patterns of sound send shivers down our spines and tickle ancient parts of our brains? How did a chemist's quest to create a drug to ease the pain of childbirth result in the creation of LSD? And did it change our understanding of the brain forever? From tortoiseshell condoms to superstar athletes on hallucinogens, science writer Zoe Cormier dissects these and other burning questions, amplifying them with insights from some of the world's bravest, cleverest, and downright weirdest scientists. Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'n' Roll explores science at the edge, where scientists ask big, strange questions -- and sometimes experiment on themselves to find answers. It shines a light into the lesser-known corners of scientific research to gain insight into the nature of consciousness, happiness, and humanity. Not to mention our parties. Here are stories of unconventional scientists, innovative inquiries, hedonistic impulses -- and how the renegades of science have illuminated the secrets of our baser impulses.

Book excerpt: " as I speed along the two-lane blacktop lined with joshua trees, I open my sun roof, crank up a live version of Take Five and think that, as far as women are concerned, I finally did something right." Memories of a fair and just childhood, from age eight to 48 and beyond, explain Why Stevie Can't Date, a collection of puckish tales about good and bad women; trying to cultivate the Playboy image at 17 and suddenly meeting a celebrity father who writes for Penthouse; and growing up straight while straddling a line between California and Nevada, the Golden State and Hollywood, the Silver State with its open roads and attitudes, and panorama of entertainment, from Jack Benny to blackjack to bull riding to brothels. From the drudgery of a low-level casino job to the perks on the next rung; from hitchhiking across the country to meeting the mayor of New York City; from romances that didn't work to romances that did for a while. Sardonic remembrances of subtle adventures by a man who is "in varying degrees, agoraphobic, alcoholic and misanthropic", probably from having lived the reasons Why Stevie Can't Date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to heavy metal rock 'n' roll, circa 1980, when all you needed was the right look, burning ambition, and a chance. Stephen Pearcy and supergroup Ratt hit the bull's-eye. Cranking out metal just as metal got hot, Ratt was the perfect band at the perfect time, and their hit single "Round and Round" became a top-selling anthem. As Ratt scrambled up a wall of fame and wealth, so they experienced the gut-wrenching free fall, after too many hours in buses, planes, and limos; too many women; too many drugs; and all the personality clashes and ego trips that marked the beginning of the end. Pearcy offers a stunningly honest self-portrait of a man running on the fumes of ambition and loneliness as the party crashed. His rock 'n' roll confessional, by turns incredible, hilarious, and lyrical, is a story of survival--and a search for the things that matter most.--From publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back at the end of the 1970s, three hundred copies of Neglect & Violence – Mental Nurse’s Training Manual were released by Wombat Printing NL to friends and the nurse’s underground. Forty plus years later it is now released to the public with little danger of litigation regarding libel or defamation. The back-cover blurb for MENTAL NURSES TRAINING MANUAL then had it that: ‘An ex-psychiatric nurse recalls his experiences after reporting a bashing and drinking on duty to his superiors. He exposes a cover-up by the hospital authorities and the State government bureaucracy then known as the Mental Health Authority. His report details murder and suicide cases and hints at widespread cruelty and indifference. His memories and impressions of the people he met working at a Melbourne mental hospital adds colour to a subject which bears thinking about. The author’s futile exploits as a candidate in the 1973 Victorian state election makes amusing and / or alarming reading, while his analysis of shortcomings in psychiatric practice might stimulate a new deal for the bewildered victims of our dog-eat-dog civilization…” “A must for all the up and coming maniacs.” – Gough Whitelamb in the Daylesford Gazette. “Lifts the lid off the sanity business.” – Clyde Pucker in the Yea Times. “Reading this book didn’t relieve my obsessive-compulsive-neurosis or my ethical dilemmas, but it gave me the pleasant feeling that I am not alone in this world with my belief in the prefectability of mankind through the exercise of hope fertilized by integrity.” – Malcolm Howard in the West Wyalong Whinger. “Whistle-blowing anti-psychiatry still resonates today.” Phil Saddams in the Rupert Warduck Stable

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have all heard the nicknames for the current generations in the news. Besides the ‘Silent Generation’ (a.k.a. The Greatest Generation) born before 1946, there are Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y (also known as the Millennials), and Generation Z. In the past few years, there has been an increasing amount of coverage and discussion about the growing frustration between these generations. Some call it a generational war. Much of the debate has to do with the Boomer generation, with younger generations claiming various failures of this generation to provide a world or country that is sustainable and affordable. TV shows, podcasts, newspaper and magazine articles, movies, and social media have increasingly begun analysis and discussion about this war. It is a hot topic and, unfortunately, becoming more emotional. Most of the analysis and coverage has to do with emerging information about each generation, such as wealth accumulation, party affiliation, changing opinions, habits, values and relationships. Facts and surveys abound, discussing all of these aspects of the generations, and more. But we all innately understand that generalizations and summaries about the generations can be dangerous, and can only tell a part of the story. What is the answer to this generational conflict that is beginning to stress friendships, acquaintances, and even families? How can we diffuse the emotion and get to positive solutions that will help heal the divide? Daniel Muller attempts to understand this growing generational conflict at a more micro level, namely by documenting and sharing the individual life stories of a somewhat random collection of ‘everyday’ Baby Boomers. Besides their life stories, he relates their opinions about a series of hot topics today, all in an attempt to better understand what linkages may exist between their environment, families, early and mid-life years, and how they think and behave today. ‘SEX, DRUGS, ROCK and WAR: The Boomer Generation’ is an enjoyable collection of very diverse life stories. In addition, Muller shares a fascinating analysis of Boomer values and opinions, and hypothesizes about the underlying potential causes of the growing conflict between generations. Finally, he shares his suggestions to calm the generational wars.
