Book Synopsis Monitoring Border Violence in the EU by : Elspeth Guild
Download or read book Monitoring Border Violence in the EU written by Elspeth Guild and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines EU external border violence and the role of Frontex, and how it can be made legally and politically accountable for these incidents. The volume sets out what the international standards are for monitoring border violence and how monitors’ independence must be guaranteed and where these standards come from. The book provides realistic options to resolve the crisis by focusing on how effective and independent border monitoring can ensure better human rights compliance at EU external borders. At the centre of the book is the question: how can we achieve effective monitoring of border police, including Frontex, by competent and independent state authorities which have as a mission human rights implementation? The goal of the book is to examine how states can prevent and investigate allegations of such violence and diminish the apparent impunity of those border police who engage in it. This book will be of interest to students of EU policy, law, migration and refugee studies and International Relations.
Book Synopsis International Conflict Resolution by : Stefan Voigt
Download or read book International Conflict Resolution written by Stefan Voigt and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2006 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased international interdependence - globalization - has also greatly increased the potential for international conflict in various areas such as trade, competition, the environment, and human rights. Observers have counted up to 40 international courts that serve to settle such conflicts. What are adequate criteria to measure the effectiveness of international courts? What factors explain the differences in their success? What factors explain the differences of nation-state governments in delegating competence to international courts in the first place? Should there be any additional courts? This volume assembles ten papers and comments that contain first steps in answering these questions. Their authors are legal scholars and economists, but also political scientists and philosophers. With this volume the Jahrbuch fur Neue Politische Okonomie has changed its title to Conferences on New Political Economy.

Book Synopsis Settling Self-Determination Disputes by : Marc Weller
Download or read book Settling Self-Determination Disputes written by Marc Weller and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-01-31 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study is the result of an international collaborative project supported and funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. This multi-year venture has involved a research team of some forty chapter authors and commentators. The research has been accompanied by three major workshops on project methodology, initial chapter reviews and final discussions. A point was made of including both scholars and practitioners involved in power-sharing settlements in the review process, in the hope that more would be learned about the actual implementation of the settlements under investigation. The project team was united in its wish to explore whether long-standing secessionist conflicts have been addressed effectively through the significant number of self-determination settlements that were generated in response to the wave of internal conflicts of the 1990s. It was also committed to testing whether consociationalist and integrative techniques of conflict settlement really are as mutually exclusive as is sometimes supposed, or whether they can in fact be mutually reinforcing. Finally, the project derives its impetus from the necessity to critically rethink the doctrine of self-determination. One may question whether its traditional, restrictive interpretation will be adequate in confronting the wide variety of future challenges to the territorial integrity of states.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996 William Angel launched a unique, pioneering study tracing the origin, growth and basic features of the international law of youth rights. It consisted of both source documents and commentary on the historical trends to elaborate and codify international instruments and standards in this field, as well as action taken by governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations to promote and protect youth rights. It concluded with a call for a new international instrument and monitoring machinery to better promote and protect the rights of youth on a global basis. The aim of the current revised, updated and expanded edition of this ground-breaking work is twofold. First, to preserve and update the landmark historical research undertaken by William Angel and present it to today’s audience. Second, to introduce up-to-date analysis of the state of the International Law of Youth Rights and to provide an easy-to-use compilation of sources of law for researchers and practitioners active in this field. This important collection will provide a roadmap for readers to finding the various sources of the International Law of Youth Rights and a reference point for the most relevant legal documents in force. It aims to spark further legal, political and sociological research in the academic field, as well as support even stronger advocacy actions to further the rights of young people. Two volume set.
