This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventh Biennial Report, 1927-1928 According to the wording of the creative legislative act it is the duty of the Montana State Board of Entomology to investigate and study the dis semination by insects of diseases among persons and animals, said investiga tion having for its purpose the eradication and prevention of such diseases. The study of insects which do not transmit disease and the control of insects attacking crops are therefore not within the province of this board but are taken care of by the Agricultural Experiment Station and the State Entomologist. The State Board of Entomology is composed of three members; the Secretary of the State Board of Health, the State Veterinary Surgeon and the State entomologist, and therefore brings together in one organization the three State Officials who are most concerned with the control of human diseases, animal diseases and insects which may transmit disease. The field headquarters for the Montana State Board of Entomology is at Hamilton, Montana, where a modern, fire-proof, well equipped laboratory was built this past year with funds provided by the 1927 legislative session. The laboratory is occupied jointly by two staffs of investigators, one employed by the Montana State Board of Entomology and the other by the U. S. Public Health Service. These two organizations have worked together under an informal plan of co-operation since 1921. The State Board of Entomology has been fortunate indeed in securing this co-operation; the U. S. Public Health Service has not only been generous in its financial support of the work but has also provided highly 'trained investigators whose researches have advanced the work far more rapidly than could have been expected if the State Board had continued to work alone. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At the close of the Victorian era, two generations of intrepid women abandoned Grand Tour travel for the rigors of archaeological expeditions, shining the light of scientific exploration on Old World antiquity. Breaking Ground highlights the remarkable careers of twelve pioneers---a compelling narrative of personal, social, intellectual, and historical achievement." -Claire Lyons, The Getty Museum "Behind these pioneering women lie a wide range of fascinating and inspiring life stories. Though each of their tales is unique, they were all formidable scholars whose important contributions changed the field of archaeology. Kudos to the authors for making their stories and accomplishments known to us all!" -Jodi Magness, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill This book presents twelve fascinating women whose contributions to the development and progress of Old World archaeology---in an area ranging from Italy to Mesopotamia---have been immeasurable. Each essay in this collection examines the life of a pioneer archaeologist in the early days of the discipline, tracing her path from education in the classics to travel and exploration and eventual international recognition in the field of archaeology. The lives of these women may serve as models both for those interested in gender studies and the history of archaeology because in fact, they broke ground both as women and as archaeologists. The interest inherent in these biographies will reach well beyond defined disciplines and subdisciplines, for the life of each of these exciting and accomplished individuals is an adventure story in itself

Book excerpt: Excerpt from 28th Biennial Report of the Kentucky State Dept; Of Agriculture, Labor and Statistics; 14th Biennial Report of the Labor Dept;; 7th Biennial Report of the State Live Stock Sanitary Board; 3rd Biennial Report of the Forest Service: For the Fiscal Years 1928 and 1929 The total farm value of the principal farm crops in Kentucky, in cluding apples, peaches, and pears, was approximately in 1928 compared to in 1927, an increase of approximately or about 19 per cent, according-to the 1928 annual crop summary issued by the Louisville office of the U. S. Division of Crop and Live Stock Estimates. Increased price and production of tobacco accounts for nearly all the increased value of Kentucky's crops in 1928 over 1927, giving about increase out of the total gain of in the value of the State's chief crops. The total acreage of this State's principal field crops, not includ ing' orchards, was about one and eight tenths per cent more in 1928 than in 1927, or acres in 1928 and acres in 1927. In creased total crop value compared to 1927 was produced by Kentucky's 1928 crops of tobacco, total hay, oats, buckwheat, sorghum sirup, apples, peaches, and pears; but decreased total crop value was pro ducea by corn, wheat, rye, barley, Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, cot ton, and grain of cowpeas and soybeans either gathered as grain or grazed off. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Governor of the Panama Canal: For the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 1928 The traffic through the Panama Canal in the fiscal year just closed was greater than in any preceding fiscal or calendar year. This statement, made last year, is repeated for this, Traffic in the fiscal year 1928 was greater than that in the fiscal year 1927 by 18 per cent in number of commercial transits, 12 per cent in net tonnage, 11 per cent in tolls and 7 per cent in cargo carried. This considerably greater canal business, which may be expressed roughly by saying that the canal has handled seven ships where six were handled the year before, has been conducted with an increase in force of approximately 1 man to every 25 previously employed. The growth in traffic led to an extension during the past year of the hours of Operation and to increases in divers elements of business connected with the operation of the canal.
