All Souls' Night 'Tis All Souls' Night and the great Christ Church bell, And many a lesser bell, sound through the room, For it is now midnight; And two long glasses brimmed with muscatel Bubble upon the table. A ghost may come, For it is a ghost's right, His element is so fine Being sharpened by his death, To drink from the wine-breath While our gross palates drink from the whole wine. I need some mind that, if the cannon sound From every quarter of the world, can stay Wound in mind's pondering, As mummies in the mummy-cloth are wound; Because I have a marvellous thing to say, A certain marvellous thing None but the living mock, Though nor for sober ear; It may be all that hear Should laugh and weep an hour upon the clock. Book excerpt: The first edition of W. B. Yeats's The Tower appeared in bookstores in London on Valentine's Day, 1928. His English publisher printed just 2,000 copies of this slender volume of twenty-one poems, priced at six shillings. The book was immediately embraced by book buyers and critics alike, and it quickly became a bestseller. Subsequent versions of the volume made various changes throughout, but this Scribner facsimile edition reproduces exactly that seminal first edition as it reached its earliest audience in 1928, adding an introduction and notes by esteemed Yeats scholar Richard J. Finneran. Written between 1912 and 1927, these poems ("Sailing to Byzantium," "Leda and the Swan," and "Among School Children" among them) are today considered some of the best and most famous in the entire Yeats canon. As Virginia Woolf declared in her unsigned review of this collection, "Mr. Yeats has never written more exactly and more passionately."

Manuscript materials are drawn on extensively, including some which have recently come to light in the Scribner Archives at the University of Texas and at Princeton University. Compared with the first edition of this volume (Editing Yeats's Poems, 1983), there is an additional chapter - on the order of the poems - as well as new information on the Scribner Edition and other revisions throughout.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fragment poem, long regarded as a peculiarly Romantic phenomenon, has never been examined outside the context of thematic and biographical criticism. By submitting the unfinished poems of the English Romantics to both a genetic investigation and a reception study, Marjorie Levinson defines the fragment's formal character at various moments in its historical career. She suggests that the formal determinancy of these works, hence their expressive or semantic affinities, is a function of historical conditions and projections. The English Romantic fragment poems share not so much a particular mode of production as a myth of production. Levinson pries apart these two dimensions and analyzes each independently to consider their relationship. By reconstructing the contemporary reception of such works as Wordsworth's "Nutting," Coleridge's "Christabel" and "Kubla Khan," Shelley's "Julian and Maddalo," and Keats's Hyperion fragments, and juxtaposing this model against dominant twentieth-century critical paradigms, Levinson discriminates layers, phases, and kinds of intentionality in the poems and considers the ideological implications of this diversity. This study is the first to investigate the English Romantic fragment poem by identifying the assumptions -- contemporary and belated -- that govern interpretative procedures. In a substantial summary chapter, Levinson reflects upon the meaning and effects of these assumptions with respect to the facts and fictions of literary production in the period and to the processes of canon formation. Book excerpt: This selection of the works of W B Yeats, includes the final book from the unfairly neglected narrative poem 'The Wanderings of Oisin' and a number of lyrics from Yeats's work as poetic dramatist. It breaks new ground by allowing the reader to engage with a dozen poems in alternative versions; in many other cases it provides significant variants, so that Yeats's struggle to revise his poetry can be experienced with unusual immediacy.

Book excerpt: This new edition of The Collected Poems of W.B.Yeats includes all of the poems authorised for publication by Yeats in his lifetime. From skilful retellings of ancient Irish myths and legends to passionate meditations on the demands and rewards of youth and old age, these exquisite, occasionally whimsical songs of love, nature and art stand in dramatic contrast to the sombre and angry poems of life in a nation torn by war and uprising. In the rich and recurrent imagery of the rose, the gyre and the tower the reader can trace Yeats's quest to unite intellect and artistry in a single compelling vision. Included in this edition are Yeats's notes complemented by explanatory notes from the esteemed Yeats scholar Richard J.Finneran.

Cohen Wrote That Yeats Was The Greatest Figure In English Poetry Since The Death Of Tennyson , And Ezra Pound, Who Once Went To Yeats To Learn How To Write Poetry, Wrote About Him : I Dare Say ... That Up To Date No One Has Shown Any Disposition To Supersede Him As The Best Poet In England Or Any Likelihood Of Doing So For Some Time... Yeats Is A Very Complex And Difficult Poet, Because There Is In Him A Curious Intermixture Of Romanticism, Realism, Mythology, Supernaturalism, Magic, Ocultism, Automatic Writing, Nationalism, Private Philosophy , And Even Prejudices. His Poems Are Very Compact, Allowing No Elaborations, And Leaving Gaps For The Reader To Imaginatively Fill Them Up, And Thus Making Them More Difficult. Great Explicators And Commentators Have, Of Course, Come Forward, But They Themselves, Sometimes, Are Either Difficult Or Not Enough. Therefore, The One Single Objective Of This Book Is To Introduce The Poet To The General Reader In An Easy Manner. To Give An Idea Of The Poet, As Many As Forty-One Poems, Selected From His Four Stages Of Poetic Development, Have Been Explained (And All Those Poems Have Been Quoted In Full). Yeats Had Also A Métier For Drama, And Had Been A Pioneer Of One Act Plays, And Wrote No Fewer Than Thirty Plays. And So Yeats Has Also Been Discussed As A Dramatist, And, In Addition, Eight Of His Plays Have Been Discussed At Some Length.
