Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons From the Pulpit The very slight miscellaneous training he had received, was as defective in kind as limited in extent, and with heart and will to go forward in the great work before him, he felt from the first, and at every step, that something beyond the ordinary food and shelter of mind, was neces sary to prepare him for the pulpit. He saw that deter mined and earnest reliance upon his own efforts was his only resource, and relying upon Divine aid, he sought to apply himself accordingly. Without guide or model, with no one to direct or strike out a course for him as a student, he was left to project and explore his own path, or be content with what he was likely to become, from the mere force of circumstances. With strong intuitive perceptions and sympathies, in relation to the good and the beautiful in nature and mo rals, with irrepressible yearnings to learn and toknow; the means and expedients to which he would be driven, as the only possible condition of ability and in uence as a minister, can be readily imagined. He soon found that while improvement, in the field of thought and labor he had chosen, had some fixed and necessary elements, many of its phases were altogether doubtful and tentative, and that all depended on trial and effort, and under the stim ulus and pressure of duty and necessity, the tension of strong desire and unrelaxed endeavor, yielding to the tendencies Of his nature without rule or model, except the ideal of his own perceptions, be appealed for aid to what ever was likely to avail him. He was the pupil, and sought to learn of whatever there was about him, from which he could derive instruction or aid. Reading, re fiection, Observation and experience - inward springs and outward relations - all the affinities and in uences of mind. They are worthy Of the man, Of his Church, Of his many friends, and of a place on the table Of all, laymen and preachers. They who read will say, Why is the volume not double its present size? But no volume can convey the charm of the preacher's wonderful presence or superb man ner. This book was released on 2017-07-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit of the Spirit and Other Sermons From a Greylock Pulpit Most of these sermons were delivered between january and June of eighteen hundred and ninety-seven. They first appeared in a weekly publication called A Greylock Pulpit. It seems fitting to give a few reasons which led to their publication. Surrounded with machinery for what is known as Institutional church work, I desired to make emphatic the inspiration which belongs to the living Word. Having already in use a sufficiently elaborate order of worship, multiplied organizations, a parish house with gymnasium and amusement rooms, a young men's literary society, all splendid channels for energy; the pulpit as a herald may speak to the indifferent life of the community and induce interest by means of the impersonal page. In the half-hour or more given to the sermon, there is much condensation, which is not in vain. If opportunity for review be given the people from week to week. I saw a further reason in the good chance to revive old friendships. One who has changed his residence, the old homestead for the college, the college for the world, one church, town or country for another, what ever his gain, must keenly feel the loss of separation. Perhaps my ser mons may prove a long, rough pole, by which I shall still save drowning friendships. Please note that the series was not christened The, but A Grey lock Pulpit. The title was given me by Greylock Mountain itself. The base begins beneath my study and the mountain rises to a height of four thousand feet of beauty and strength. On a clear day at least four states, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and perhaps Connecticut can be seen from this summit. Greylock is Berkshire's Mount Zion. If mountaineers are always freemen, mountain preach ers ought to be free preachers. This Taconic mountain has been the object of much contention among geologists. However, their polemic was of the last decade. Theological strife is happily passing, and the church of today has earnestly begun to study sociology. Greylock has lately been made a type by geologists. The churches of our valley are slowly conforming to a higher ideal. Again Greylock is a deposit, not the result of volcanic action like the lower and opposite Hoosac range. The Greylock message therefore is that our social changes ought to be educational and gradual rather than fierce and revolutionary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Pulpit The sermon of Dr. Archibald Alexander is probably the last complete discourse he ever prepared, and was delivered by him in the City of New York, at the instal lation of his son, the Rev. James W. Alexander, D.D. The friends of Prof. Dod have selected from his manu scripts a sermon, which from its subject, was one of his favourite discourses. Its devout and elevating sentiments, in regard to those things that are not seen, will doubt less be read with peculiar interest, now that he who uttered them, is no longer looking at those things, as through a glass, darkly, but face to face beholds them, with the Open vision of one of the Spirits of the just made perfect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fast Day Sermons, or the Pulpit on the State of the Country The following Discourses are collected in a volume in the belief that they will have a historical interest. These are Revolutionary times. The country is profoundly agitated, not on a question Of party, but Of National existence. On the very brink of dissolution, we are led to pause and review the causes that have brought us to this. While the people attend eagerly to the appeals Of their leaders, thoughtful men will listen silently for the calm voices of the Pulpit, from which they will expect a clearer statement Of the principles which underlie all this popular turbulence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Pulpit: Collection of Sermons by the Most Eminent Living Divines of England The fact that the public are already in possession of many valuable collections of sermons, cannot be deemed a sufficient reason for not increasing the number of such publications. On the contrary, new accessions to the existing stock are constantly needed to supply the places of those that are yearly passing into disuse. There is a freshness in a work directly from the press - especially if it contain a choice variety of matter - which gives to it a peculiar charm. Perhaps "'Tis curiosity. - Who hath not felt Its spirit, and before its altar knelt?" - that will lead many to read with interest a new book, who would never advance beyond the title page of an old one of equal merit. That this inert love of novelty may be turned to the best account, no pains should be spared to furnish an ample supply of healthy aliment, that thus the reluctant mind may be allured to the reception of useful instruction. Besides, it is a fact - scarcely less interesting to the patriot than to the Christian - that the alarming demand for a large class of publications, pregnant with the most deadly poison, under which the press for years has "groaned, being burdened," is gradually diminishing, while good, truthful, and religious books are finding a correspondingly greater sale. To answer this increasing demand, and as an antidote to the poison, every Christian press in the land should be kept busy, scattering its "healing leaves" with an unsparing hand, until useful and religious books, like Aaron's rod, shall have swallowed up the serpents of the magicians. In offering to the public this collection of sermons, it is proper to state that, with the exception of a single discourse, no portion of the present volume has before been published in this country. It will be found to contain sermons by several ministers whose productions are comparatively little known to the American public. Among these might be mentioned that of Daniel Moore, the worthy successor of Melvill, at Camden Chapel. Mr. Moore is justly celebrated both as a preacher and a writer. There is no means of knowing, nor is it likely that this will ever be discovered. Most probably he was a resident in St Andrews. But whoever he was, he appears to have executed his task, (if that can be called a task, which seems to have been a labour of love, ) with exemplary fidelity and accuracy. That he was an ardent admirer of Henderson there can be no doubt, and we may fairly enough conjecture that he was led to wait on his ministry at this time, and take down everything that fell from his lips, even to his very prayers, by a sense of the supreme importance of his public utterances at such a crisis in the history of the church and kingdom of Scotland. Judging from the character of the MS we should say that this unknown person was a man of intelligence and educa tion, though not deeply skilled in the learned tongues.
