Book Synopsis Preaching Power by : Charles A. Witschorik
Download or read book Preaching Power written by Charles A. Witschorik and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book uses a gender perspective to examine sermons and other officially endorsed discourses of the Catholic Church in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Mexico City. Analyzing the different ways that, over time, gendered images, metaphors, and hagiographical examples were used in sermons and other documents, the book examines how the church negotiated challenges to its cultural and ideological hegemony. Beginning with sermons from the early eighteenth century, the author follows the evolution of church discourses as preachers reveled in Baroque analogies, embraced ideals of the Enlightenment, targeted women's alleged moral vices at times of political crisis, and ultimately turned to notions of women as ""the devout sex"" in order to combat incipient liberalism. Put another way, liberals after independence were not the only ones to assert a kind of ""republican motherhood"": preachers countered with a vision of ""Catholic motherhood"" that had great resonance in Mexico even into the twentieth century."

Book Synopsis The Transatlantic Hispanic Baroque by : Harald E. Braun
Download or read book The Transatlantic Hispanic Baroque written by Harald E. Braun and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gathering a group of internationally renowned scholars, this volume presents cutting-edge research on the complex processes of identity formation in the transatlantic world of the Hispanic Baroque. Identities in the Hispanic world are deeply intertwined with sociological concepts such as class and estate, with geography and religion (i.e. the mixing of Spanish Catholics with converted Jews, Muslims, Dutch and German Protestants), and with issues related to the ethnic diversity of the world’s first transatlantic empire and its various miscegenations. Contributors to this volume offer the reader diverse vantage points on the challenging problem of how identities in the Hispanic world may be analyzed and interpreted. A number of contributors relate earlier processes and formations to Neo-Baroque and postmodern conceptualisations of identity. Given the strong interest in identity and identity-formation within contemporary cultural studies, the book will be of interest to a broad group of readers from the fields of law, geography, history, anthropology and literature.

Book Synopsis Organización, identidad e imagen de las colectividades vascas de la emigración (siglos XVI-XXI) by : Óscar Álvarez Gila
Download or read book Organización, identidad e imagen de las colectividades vascas de la emigración (siglos XVI-XXI) written by Óscar Álvarez Gila and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Instruments of the Divinity by : Christopher van Ginhoven Rey
Download or read book Instruments of the Divinity written by Christopher van Ginhoven Rey and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Instruments of the Divinity, Christopher van Ginhoven Rey shows that an important reflection on God’s providential praxis animates the foundational documents of the Society of Jesus. Focusing on Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s conception of Jesuits as the instruments of a laboring God, the book explores the philosophical and theological roots of the metaphor of the instrument and its place in the social imaginary of the Jesuit order. Close readings of the Spiritual Exercises, the Jesuit Constitutions, and a selection of letters by Ignatius call attention to the existence of a rhetoric of instrumentality that provides the basis for the Society’s project of instruction, its loving affirmation of the world, and its attempts to differentiate itself from its monastic predecessors.
