Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting with some observations relating to shifts in ecclesiology and identifying them as a move beyond contextualization to syncretism this work goes on to assess the feasibility of preaching in a postmodern culture which rejects both the idea of absolute truth and authority used as power. It traces the historical and philosophical development of postmodernism. The Enlightenment project is deemed to have failed and Christianity is perceived as an oppressive metanarrative. In a world that is becoming increasingly sceptical and where preaching practitioners are becoming disillusioned this book offers some guidelines about preaching to postmoderns. In a relational age rationality is impotent, but the author distinguishes between authoritative and authoritarian preaching allowing hope for the survival of the homiletic task. Humility is presented as preferable to certitude and persuasion is redefined. The author suggests using an inductive mode of communication as a means of engaging postmodern listeners. He signposts a way forward in the labyrinthine complexity of the new paradigm and demonstrates that the homiletic task is still feasible. Thus this book will be of interest to teachers and students of theology as well as pastors desiring to develop a new apologetic strategy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intimacy has multiple meanings for preaching. It affirms the crucial role a messenger has in the message. It is the quality that helps to establish a relationship between the hearer and the speaker. It is a "holistic" approach to preaching. Designed to help both the student and the practicing minister communicate more effectively, Preaching and Intimacy begins with the preacher as a person before moving through the components that are essential to preaching. Preaching and Intimacy gives attention to a minister's relationship with God, his/her feelings about himself/herself, how to imaginatively engage a biblical text, how to think of the listeners, and how to use these tools to address and deliver a sermon. Emphasis is put on the preacher's investment in the sermon so that when it is spoken, it is authentic and real.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most preaching and teaching in the church engages only one of the senses—hearing. In The Power of Multisensory Preaching and Teaching, Rick Blackwood shows how recognizing and engaging the multiple senses of the congregation can lead to greater impact. Blackwood presents both biblical evidence and scientific research showing that the more senses we stimulate in teaching and preaching, the greater the levels of learner attention, comprehension, and retention. Blackwood addresses both the “why” and the “how” of multisensory communication. Regardless of one’s current skill level, this practical book can help anyone add multi-sensory elements to messages in order to take communication to the next level—more compelling, clear, and memorable. As a result of reading this book readers can be more effective as a communicator and teacher. The book includes tools, examples, and worksheets.

With many priceless tips on the development, relevance and structuring of a message, this book will be an invaluable addition to the bookshelf of any preacher. Everything about sermon construction is examined with perception and insight: the beginning the conclusion, and how to prepare for preaching. No one can preach without preparing their own inner life. Sangter preached his most moving sermon as he lay dying slowly fir a few years from an incurable disease. In that experience he touched more preachers by “the amassing of great soul so as o have something worthwhile to give.” Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing many of these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing extensively on primary sources, this pioneer work in modern religious history explores the training of preachers, the construction of sermons, and how Irish evangelicalism and the wider movement in Great Britain and the United States shaped the preaching event. Evangelical preaching and politics, sectarianism, denominations, education, class, social reform, gender, and revival are examined to advance the argument that evangelical sermons and preaching went significantly beyond religious discourse. The result is a book for those with interests in Irish history, culture and belief, popular religion and society, evangelicalism, preaching, and communication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In search of a way to worship that is relevant today and into the twenty-first century, Moeller proposes an approach based on the "great commandment" to love God and one's neighbor as oneself. With special attention to the time, space, sounds, sights, touches, and symbols that form the context of every worship service, she argues for a collaborative approach to the worship service in which the participants are involved from preparation to celebration. Illustrating this highly evocative, thoroughly feminist theology of worship is a sample service that pays particular attention to how the process and design of worship impact the experience of the worshipers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a needed overview of the scholarship on medieval public culture and popular movements such as the Peace of God, heresy, and the crusades and illustrates how a changing sense of the populus, the importance of publics and public opinion and public spheres was influential in the evolution of medieval cultures. Public opinion did play an important role, even in the Middle Ages; it did not wait until the era of modern history to do so. Using modern research on such aspects of culture as textual communities, large and small publics, cults, crowds, rumor, malediction, gossip, dispute resolution and the European popular revolution, the author focuses on the Peace of God movement, the era of Church reform in the tenth and eleventh centuries, the rise and combat of heresy, the crusades, and the works of fourteenth-century political thinkers such as Marsiglio of Padua regarding the role of the populus as the basis for the analysis. The pattern of changes reflected in this study argues that just as in the modern world the simplistic idea of “the public‎” was a phantom. Instead there were publics large and small that were influential in shaping the cultures of the era under review.

Book excerpt: Ten Minute Scriptural, Earthy Sermons for the Contemporary Scene highlights the continued place of preaching in communicating the life and message of Jesus and the major contribution it makes to quality life. The forty chosen sermons are from various parts of the Bible (but mostly the Gospels) and are designedly brief in discussion. The questions following each sermon set out to encourage serious thought about individual belief and traditional doctrine, and how best to live.
