Book excerpt: Krypton-85 is a chemically inert, radioactive gas produced by fission of uranium or plutonium isotopes. Depending on the fuel cycle, krypton-85 production in nuclear reactors may range from approx. 200 to approx. 600 kCi/GW/sub e/-year. However, the EPA has published a standard restricting krypton-85 release to 50 kCi/GW/sub e/-year for fuel irradiated after January 1, 1983. To conform with the federal standard, recovery and storage of krypton-85 will be required in some nuclear fuel cycle processes. The long-term waste management of krypton-85 poses unique judgemental problems. Release, recovery, immobilization, and storage (individually, and in combinations), involve a wide range of environmental, economic, and social commitments. The choice of applicable technologies, if such technologies are to be used at all, imposes another set of boundary conditions. This strategy analysis describes the use of a general framework for decision-making in evaluating krypton-85 waste management systems. Such a framework can be further used to provide technical assessment and dose-probability calculations for individual technologies, and to show the interactions among technological options required for the overall waste management scheme.

Potentially injurious localized corrosion in the form of pitting was observed for 304 stainless steel at 672°K. All other materials showed good performance in the temperature range proposed for krypton-85 gas cylinder storage. Type 304 stainless steel showed significant general corrosion and intergranular attack in liquid rubidium of lower purity between 793 and 893°K. Type 304 stainless steel is not recommended for hardware which may encounter similar service conditions.

Both approaches described here appear to meet the requirements for such a storage medium. Entrapment of the Kr during sputtering has several rather obvious safety advantages. The operation of the process at low rho and at or below room temperature should reduce markedly the potential for significant Kr-85 release to the environment during processing of the waste stream. It also appears that adaptation of this process for handling radioactive materials would also be simpler than the large high pressure, high temperature apparatus required for loading the glass sample. Furthermore, a significantly higher Kr loading is possible in the sputtered metals thus reducing the volume required for storage by as much as a factor of 50 to 100. On the other hand, the low density loaded glass process takes advantage of a very inexpensive starting material and existing commercial technology for high temperature, high pressure processes. The volume of the Kr-loaded glass matrix could be reduced by going to still higher pressures.
