Book excerpt: O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de contribuir para o aprofundamento das reflexões a respeito da relação entre elementos da dimensão cognitiva e da dimensão afetiva e de suas implicações para o processo de ensino e de aprendizagem de ciências. Partindo do pressuposto que a realidade da vida cotidiana é distinta da realidade discutida no âmbito da ciência e da filosofia, utilizamos o conceito de sentimento de realidade, por julgarmos como o mais adequado para a compreensão do modo como os objetos da ciência são incorporados por estudantes do ensino médio. Através de questionário e entrevista semi-estruturada, procuramos investigar então se o realismo metafísico sofre a influência da educação científica. Para isso, procuramos verificar se os objetos da ciência são considerados reais ou não-reais. Por meio dos argumentos fornecidos como justificativa da escolha da intensidade de realidade, foi possível identificar que os componentes da dimensão afetiva se fazem presentes na definição da intensidade de realidade e na consideração de algo como real. A partir de nossos resultados podemos concluir que a intensidade de realidade - e, por extensão, o sentimento de realidade - atribuído a um objeto da ciência, assim como para outros objetos, não é decorrente de critérios puramente lógicos e racionais. Crenças, convencimento, valores, nível de conhecimento, familiaridade com o objeto, entendimento e sentimentos são também definidores do sentimento de realidade.
