Book excerpt: Four focus groups were conducted with senior secondary students (including rural, metropolitan, government and non-government schools) to ascertain those students' attitudes to teaching as a career. A succinct report was prepared summarising the findings from that research discussing the implications for attracting young people to the teaching profession. There were 80 students in the focus groups, 56 girls, 24 boys and 58 were doing mathematics/science subjects. Students were selected for the focus groups on the basis that it was likely they would receive an Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER) that would allow them access either to a teaching degree or to an appropriate course (such as science or arts) and then a Diploma of Education.
