Book excerpt: Excerpt from Semitic and Hamitic Origins: Social and Religious Perhaps, in view of these changes of opinion, some readers may consider it not worth while to read the pages which follow. Is there any guarantee that the opinions here expressed are nearer the truth than those put forth thirty years ago? Any who so ques tion cannot be aware that in science opinions and theories are never final; they are always subject to change as facts previously unknown come to light. The worker who, under such circumstances, refuses to change his opinions ceases to be a scientist. In physics many of the theories which were thought to be well established thirty years ago have been entirely displaced, and the theory of matter, now held on the basis of convincing evidence, was undreamed of then. The writer ventures therefore to hope that the Openness of mind which has led him, as knowledge has increased, to replace theories a'rdently embraced in youth by others, more in accord with facts now known, will commend his present work to thoughtful readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of Semitic Origins Social and Religious The studies which have culminated in this volume have occupied much of my attention for the past eleven years, and have previously led to the publication of several articles. In the autumn of 1898, while giving a course of lectures on Semitic religion, the various parts of the subject grouped themselves so coherently in my mind that I could no longer doubt that these studies had led me to the discovery of the path trodden by the Semites in the journey from savagery to civilization, in the course of which the most characteristic features of their social and religious life were created. Since then the details have been worked out with as much care as the complex duties which attach to a very comprehensive chair would permit, and are here submitted to scholars. The writer is well aware that to many of his fellow workers in Semitic studies, who have been engaged in working different mines in our large territory, any attempt to sketch the course of Semitic evolution will seem premature and impossible. It is the writer's conviction, nevertheless, that he has chanced upon the trail along which the Semites dragged themselves during those weary centuries when they were working their way from savagery to civilization, and that he has had the good fortune in some places to identify their fossil footprints and to perceive the meaning of those identified in many places by others. Here and there an identification of the exact course of the trail is not at present possible, the luxuriant forests, the populous cities, or the overflowing seas of later civilizations have so buried the trail under thick jungles, massive mounds, or strata of rock. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the puzzling phenomenon of new veiling practices among lower middle class women in Cairo, Egypt. Although these women are part of a modernizing middle class, they also voluntarily adopt a traditional symbol of female subordination. How can this paradox be explained? An explanation emerges which reconceptualizes what appears to be reactionary behavior as a new style of political struggle--as accommodating protest. These women, most of them clerical workers in the large government bureaucracy, are ambivalent about working outside the home, considering it a change which brings new burdens as well as some important benefits. At the same time they realize that leaving home and family is creating an intolerable situation of the erosion of their social status and the loss of their traditional identity. The new veiling expresses women's protest against this. MacLeod argues that the symbolism of the new veiling emerges from this tense subcultural dilemma, involving elements of both resistance and acquiescence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The outstanding nineteenth-century biblical scholar and Semitist William Robertson Smith gave three courses of Burnett Lectures on the Religion of the Semites at Aberdeen just over a century ago. The first series, published in 1889 (2nd edn, 1894), has long been a classic work. The second and third series were never published, owing to the author's ill health; however, the manuscript of them still exists in the Cambridge University Library and was recently discovered by John Day, who has produced this edited version of the work to commemorate the centenary of Smith's death. The Lectures, which constitute a work of considerable Semitic and Classical learning, are on the following subjects: Feasts, Priests and the Priestly Oracle, Prophecy and Divination, Semitic Polytheism and Cosmogony. Dr Day has written an Introduction, which evaluates the work and includes nineteenth-century press reports of the Lectures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is an original study of what is commonly termed the American "myth of Ham". It examines black and white Americans' recourse to the biblical character of Ham as a cultural strategy for explaining racial origins. Previous studies in the area have been restricted to associating the Hamitic idea with pro-slavery arguments, whereas the thesis of this project reveals a fundamental irony: black American Christians who reinforced the meanings of illegitimacy by appealing to Ham as the ancestor of the race.
