Download or read book Samson written by Joachim Acolatse and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The account of Samson is filled with miraculous feats that have enthralled Bible students for years. But his supernatural acts have not sheltered him from the harsh criticism frequently levied by the modern church. With accusations ranging from rage problems to sexual immorality, how could Samson have been Israel's agent of God? How does he then appear among the list of the most faithful? Was his supposed weakness not used mightily for God's glory? In Samson – God's Mighty Man of Faith, author Joachim Acolatse defends this biblical figure against the searing charges brought against him by modern preachers. Through attention to detail and scriptural analysis, Joachim shows readers that there is a better explanation for Samson's account. Could it be that God had always intended for him to live exactly as he did? That Samson was a holy man, constantly engaged in God's purpose? Join Joachim in this unique look at one of the most controversial characters in biblical history. Some say he was a cruel and lustful warrior—but Joachim contends that he was a mighty man of faith.

Book Synopsis "When Gods Were Men" by : Esther J. Hamori
Download or read book "When Gods Were Men" written by Esther J. Hamori and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-27 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the texts of Genesis 18 and 32, God appears to a patriarch in person and is referred to by the narrator as a man, both times by the Hebrew word īsh. In both texts, God as īsh is described in graphically human terms. This type of divine appearance is identified here as the "īsh theophany". The phenomenon of God appearing in concrete human form is first distinguished from several other types of anthropomorphism, such as divine appearance in dreams. The īsh theophany is viewed in relation to appearances of angels and other divine beings in the Bible, and in relation to anthropomorphic appearances of deities in Near Eastern literature. The īsh theophany has implications for our understanding of Israelite concepts of divine-human contact and communication, and for the relationship to Ugaritic literature in particular. The book also includes discussion of philosophical approaches to anthropomorphism. The development of philosophical opposition to anthropomorphism can be traced from Greek philosophy and early Jewish and Christian writings through Avicenna, Averroes, Maimonides and Aquinas, and into the work of later philosophers such as Hume and Kant. However, the work of others can be applied fruitfully to the problem of divine anthropomorphism, such as Wittgenstein's language games.

Book excerpt: The outstanding nineteenth-century biblical scholar and Semitist William Robertson Smith gave three courses of Burnett Lectures on the religion of the Semites at Aberdeen just over a century ago. The first series, published in 1889, has long been a classic work but the second and third series were never published owing to the author's ill health. However, the manuscript remained in Cambridge University Library where it was recently rediscovered by John Day. This volume presents an edited version of these important lectures, with a critical introduction and a collection of press reports from the time of their first presentation.
